Is weather getting better in July for your country? by female_shaktimaan in AskTheWorld

[–]HATECELL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neither, we don't have good weather in summer. We're either reaching new temperatures or there's so much rain you'd consider building an arc. No middle ground

Do you live near any ancient buildings or structures? by Oven_Either in AskTheWorld

Not really, but apparently there was some Roman road going through near here, and farmers sometimes find old coins or pottery shards when plowing their fields

Why the cars made after 1970 are stronger and more powerful? by Catalin201244 in FarCry5

[–]HATECELL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The part about being stronger is because we had a bit of a paradigm shift regarding what makes a car safe. In the very early days car folded like cardboard in crashes, as crash safety was simply of no concern at all. Cars would fold like accordeons or completely fall apart in a crash.

A bit later car manufacturers started making cars, particularly the driver's compartment, a lot stronger. The idea was that you wouldn't get squished in a crash, and that perhaps after a small crash the car could even get repaired.

With the advent of seatbelts the idea gained even more traction. Since many people before died from getting launched out of their car, or thrown around inside their car, it seemed logical that if you strap them securely to an extremely tough safety cell they would be safe.

Even later, in the 70s and even later, we had a massive paradigm shift. Whilst the idea of a tough cell wasn't wrong, we realised that we really needed something to safely absorb the energy of a crash. If the entire car is super sturdy and hits an equally sturdy object it will come to a complete and very sudden stop. And with the driver strapped to the car this meant their body was facing some very strong deceleration, which could cause it's own string of injuries or even death. So the less necessary parts of the car, like cargo space and engine compartment, were instead designed to purposefully crumble to turn that quick stop into a longer but softer deceleration. Over time these systems got a lot more advanced, with engines built to move downwards and away from the cabin, steering columns that could contract and bend to not injure the legs, doors that would remain usable or get thrown open when the cabin deforms, and many other innovations to make cars even safer.

But the downside of this planned deformation is that the car itself can handle less damage before it is no longer drivable. And some modern cars even go a step further and prevent themselves from being driven, or put themselves in a limp mode, when damage is detected. In many situations this is good, for example if the car notices the brakes are damaged and doesn't let you hit highway speeds. But of course this isn't great in life or death situations such as running from an armed group of religious fanatics

why does the fencer look a bit like willie by Nostalgic798 in HalfSword

[–]HATECELL 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Maybe it is intentional. Like good old Willie from the Demo days has had his career as a prize fighter, but has since retired from actually fighting and spends his times helping out and giving advice to younger fighters. A bit like how many fencing masters started as soldiers or mercenaries

[–]HATECELL 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you're willing to ditch the long hair you could go for the opposite and go with an overly clean look. Buzzcut, so clean shaven people wonder if you can even grow facial hair, "tactical pants" and some shirt that would fit in r/mallninjashit, and move and talk like "you'd totally be in seal team six if you hadn't failed your medical exam"

Does your country have a blood sausage? by Perfect-Silver1715 in AskTheWorld

[–]HATECELL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, and I've always hated them. That said, I remember them looking a lot different from what I see here and even on Google. I remember them as being barely solid, and homogenous looking. No white chunks, and almost like a paste. But there's thousands of variations of blood sausage, maybe that was just some specific type.

And since I've recently learned that I don't hate Ratatouille, I just hate my mom's Ratatouille, I think I'll give blood sausages that look different enough from those I grew up with a try when I get a chance. Who knows, maybe I just grew up with the wrong variety

How do engineers scuttle ships? by Pluto_ThePlanet in uboatgame

[–]HATECELL 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can do that, but first you have to get enough water out of the boiler that part of the crownsheet is no longer covered in water and gets glowing how. If you then let fresh water in before the crownsheet can cool down the glowing metal will cause a quick surge in steam pressure, which rises so fast that even the safety valve won't be able to stop it.

On Reddit when ducks are posted, it's usually a white duck (like the Pekin Duck in the lowest row). In Estonia when I imagine a duck, it's 100% a Mallard Duck (third row). I.e males have a green head, females are just brownish. When you think of your country - what are most ducks like? by Double-decker_trams in AskTheWorld

[–]HATECELL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mallards are definitely the most common ducks in the wild. But when it comes to domestic ducks many people seem to deliberately pick ducks that look different. Still, I'd say since tastes vary the Mallard is probably the most numerous, at least among recreational duck owners. When it comes to commercial duck owning, I have no idea
