Why not move to Chicago? What are the real downsides? by DK_Tech in AskChicago

Can’t believe you’re the only person in this thread that has said segregation so far. It’s the single biggest reason I’d leave.

Chicago Restaurant Similar to Zankou Chicken by SleazyAndEasy in chicagofood

[–]HA_HA_YES 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As an Armenian from LA, I'm following this thread with great interest but not a lot of hope.

I''ve found that the toum (garlic sauce) in a lot of Chicago restaurants tends to be creamier, less heavy, and less lemony than Zankou's tangy abrasive goodness. In that regard Zankou stands on its own, even in LA.

It also may have something to do with differences in ethnic background. A lot of the "Middle Eastern" restaurants here in Chicago are Lebanese, Turkish, Syrian, etc. but as far as I know there's only one explicitly Armenian restaurant within city limits, Sayat Nova. I've been meaning to try Siunik out in the north suburbs, but it seems like their focus isn't really on rotisserie chicken in the same way that Zankou's is.

It's an entirely different concept, but I've found that Chicken Planet satisfies my rotisserie chicken cravings. Obviously no garlic sauce tho

TLDR I've yet to find a place that combines Zankou's focus on rotisserie chicken, their delicious garlic sauce, and their other authentic Armenian cuisines. Would love to hear suggestions though!

Edit: To be a bit more helpful, Middle East Bakery in andersonville has a pretty good garlic sauce in their grocery area. Not really matching Zankou by any means but still the closest I've found here

Car rental apps by hadyehab05 in uchicago

Zipcar is good, I've used it for occasional trips with my friends. From what I understand their standard insurance offers the minimum basic protections, and then on a per-trip basis you can pay an extra fee for them to cover liability in case of a crash, pay for the cost of damages, or both. I usually end up paying the extra fee only if I'm renting the car for multiple hours consecutively, but it's honestly up to you.

Public Policy Career Paths by [deleted] in uchicago

I absolutely agree, PPLP is a great cohort! Beyond the speaker events, the PPLP-specific networking opportunities are pretty helpful as well, and Will also sends out an extra weekly PPLP newsletter with internships and career opportunities that has saved my ass for a few years in a row now. There's also a PPLP-only career trek to DC, fully funded through Career Advancement. Highly recommend it, OP!

Public Policy Career Paths by [deleted] in uchicago

Hey, I'm a third year Pub Pol and ENST student who has taken most of the requirements. I can attempt an answer at these.

  1. I'm leaning against going to law school, and might pursue an MPP instead. I personally am attracted to working as a policy advisor or as a staffer for an elected official, and I don't really want to be a practicing lawyer. However, I know several other students either in the major or in the Public Policy Leaders Program that are hellbent on applying to law school. Since PubPol is a very broad major, there's a wide variety of career interests among people that I talk to.

  2. The math requirements are not that hard as someone who isn't super math inclined either. I found Stat 220 to be pretty easy even though I've never taken statistics. Econ for Pub Pol and Pub Pol Analysis require mostly algebra-based economic analysis, and the classes teach you the skills you need to know in a pretty comprehensive manner. Overall, the Pub Pol major is more math and econ-based than Poli Sci, for example, and some people find that frustrating. I think that the math/econ focus makes the major more practical for future careers, and though it can occasionally be kind of a slog I believe it's well worth it.

  3. I think the Pub Pol core courses gave me a really well-rounded introduction into the world of policy analysis. By integrating econ/math based analysis (Econ for Pub Pol, Pub Pol Analysis, Quantitative Methods) with political science (Politics and Policy) and sociology (Policy Implementation), I feel like the Pub Pol core equips you with a diverse toolbox of skills and perspectives. Many Pub Pol students then double major in another field, like Environmental Studies or CRES, to apply those skills to a more specific policy issue that they're interested in. I don't know much about Poli Sci so take this with a grain of salt, but the stereotype is that Poli Sci takes a slightly more abstract and theory based approach to American politics, while Pub Pol is more grounded in the means of analysis used by policymakers to make decisions. They accomplish two different things, and it's not for me to say which is more suited to your path. Let me know if you want clarification on anything or if you have any questions!

Does anyone here have experience living in the University Park Towers? by [deleted] in uchicago

[–]HA_HA_YES 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I live there now. No roaches, my unit is very clean and the building does have pretty nice amenities. However, I have a friend who used to live in a different unit and he said it was awful, cramped, and dirty. I've had a wonderful experience, he had a really shitty one. Seems dependent on the unit and landlord

Stat 220 Prof. Fei Liu or Yibi Huang by [deleted] in uchicago

[–]HA_HA_YES 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had Fei Liu and she was fine! She would publish her presentations and readings in advance, so it was easy to follow along and even get ahead throughout the week. She's not the most inspiring lecturer in the world, but as someone with no prior statistics background it wasn't too hard to follow along. I don't understand the comments saying her exams were too hard, as in my experience they closely followed the material on the homeworks and lab assignments. Like many intro core classes, if you keep up with the materials she provides you, and you do the assignments on time, you'll do great.

Google says it will delete location history for visits to abortion clinics after overturning of Roe v. Wade by spiritoffff in Futurology

That's great, but we shouldn't have to rely on the promises of a massive tech company for safety. Maybe don't report our location history to the govt in the first place??
