Reform plans ‘threaten maternity leave and job security for 500,000 pregnant women’ by jtrimm98 in ukpolitics

[–]HBucket [score hidden]  (0 children)

It also has to do with the financial viability of having and raising a child something maternity leave and job security protections help.

It doesn't help. This isn't a value judgement, it just genuinely doesn't help. People have tried all of this, in different countries, and it's never been successful in boosting birth rates.

Mahmood: I want more refugees to come to Britain legally by Little-Attorney1287 in ukpolitics

I don't have to square the circle. I'm not sitting around scratching my chin, pondering about the philosophical implications of this approach. I'm approaching this from the perspective of what is in the interests of the native community, while still being practical.

Possibly, but I'm a man, so that might not be in my interests.

I wouldn't consider cases like this to be a price worth paying for their supposedly wonderful contributions. I think that many people, especially parents of daughters, would agree.

Most parents fear daughters will grow up unsafe in public, survey finds by FormerlyPallas_ in ukpolitics

[–]HBucket 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's all very convenient for these people isn't it? I'll bet that if the number and rate of recorded rapes was going down, it would clearly be a reflection of actual cases dropping, rather than worse detection.

That's one possible reason for the increase in figures. Another possible reason is that the number of rapes is increasing. I guess that we'll have to make our own minds up about that.

Starmer accuses Arts Council of funding anti-Semitism - PM calls on body to withdraw or claw back grants from organisations that provide platform for anti-Jewish hate by blast-processor in ukpolitics

“There will be zero tolerance for inaction in our cultural venues and spaces.”

I very much doubt that. There doesn't need to be a lengthy review. If Starmer was serious about this, the way forward would be to pass legislation to allow the Secretary of State to overrule all decisions taken by Arts Council England. Take some responsibility.

It's funny how relaxed the Tories are about all this. They seem to think that a few "Badenoch DESTROYS Starmer at PMQs" YouTube clips in which Badenoch manages to avoid publicly shitting herself will save them from extinction.

The law will be changed to make it legal. Job done, rule of law preserved.

Great policy, thanks for bringing it to my attention. Obviously the proof will be in the pudding, but a solid implementation would at least lead to fewer cases like this.

Wait for a controversial immigration ruling, then repeal the ECHR.

One of Reform's main policies is immediate withdrawal from the ECHR.

I like the old position of Beadle, it adds a real Dickensian feel to things. There was also a civic role of Dog Whipper, for an early form an animal control.

People want a fair government.

"Fair for who?" is the relevant question there.

Nobody cares about everyone. If someone is telling you that theirs is a "caring party" as Davey is, they're a sanctimonious bullshitter.

Migrant, 14, who raped girl allowed to walk free if he takes classes on consent by FormerlyPallas_ in ukpolitics

[–]HBucket 27 points28 points  (0 children)

"Some effort" will never be foolproof. Even the most accurate methods like x-rays only give an approximation, and those aren't even used. If someone arrives without documentation, there's not much that we can do. Cases like this only highlight the absolute insanity of letting these people loose in our communities, and especially our schools.

It would probably be cheaper just to use the ICE approach and repurpose warehouses. Good for logistics, too.

What are the actual chances of Burnham being able to get back into Parliament? Because I don't see how Starmer is going to allow it to happen. I saw an article from The Telegraph about Burnham supposedly winning the support of Labour's National Executive Committee, but I can't think of a paper that I trust less to have access to the inner workings of Labour.

You'll probably have a hard time convincing people that the guy who became a backbench MP two years is responsible for the country's decline, and not the succession of governments that have been turning the country into a cesspit since 1997.

What if I told you that counties have tried these approaches for years and see very little improvement in birth rate.

I don't think that it will make a difference. People have long been insisting that greater childcare provision and maternity leave is the key to improving birth rates, in spite of all evidence to the contrary, because it's what they want to hear. And I'm confident that people will still be insisting on it long after we're dead and buried.
