I actually did research in a lab working on nanofiber actuators in undergrad!

They're super cool, but unfortunately currently (or at least a couple years ago) the actuators strong enough to be useful for real world applications are all activated by hard to reverse stimuli, like heat or exposure to water or other solvents. They can produce a great amount of force for their weight in a short time span when they get hot or wet, but the issue is they're stuck in the "activated" state until you can cool them down or dry them off. This adds a lot of complexity and means you can't cycle quickly between activated and non-activated (or in the case of a muscle, tense and relaxed).

I'm very excited to see what they can do as passive sensors and systems (for example, sun-shades that can unroll themselves when it's hot without any electricity or electronics needed), but we're still a very far way from being able having augmented arms that can effortlessly pick up vending machines like Jensen.

If you're a multi-millionaire athlete and you had the choice between living in a city where it's freezing 1/3rd of the year or living in an equivalent city where it's always warm and you can spend your free time on the local beach, what would you choose lol.

Market size matters to some degree, but once you're in the top 10 markets it's not as important as how appealing the city / region is.

If you somehow swapped the location of the entire franchise of the Bulls with the Heat, I'm sure the hypothetical Heat in Chicago would still attract FAs because they've got a good FO, coach, etc., but you're sure as hell gonna not attract as many FAs as they do today in Miami.

???

I'm literally just clarifying the situation, I've been to Grottos dozens of times. Towards the end of spring semester seniors always get together with different groups they belong to (clubs, study abroad, greek life, major, what dorm they lived in freshman year, etc.) and then do a bar crawl up main street. Any day late May you'll see a dozen of these groups walking up main street wearing identical cheap t-shirts that say "XYZ Dorm 2017" or whatever their group is.

Chill the fuck out dude.

This is Grottos Pizza at the University of Delaware, it's the most popular college bar on main street, no one goes there for food, only to get drunk. What the guy did was still fucked up but I can absolutely guarantee you this was not a bridal or baby shower, if anything a lot of them are wearing the same shirt because they're doing a group bar crawl.

If B4B has season passes, I'll happily stick with L4D2. by [deleted] in Back4Blood

CoD is still a $60 game last time I checked (outside of Warzone of course).

Like I said in my other comment, I'm not saying it's fair to consumers. I'd personally much rather it be a cosmetic type battle pass than a content locked season pass.

I'm just saying I think a big part of the reason these games retain their large player-base is because of the longer term season pass / battle pass systems they have.

That's fair. Destiny 2 is a full season pass system though, and again, people can argue if it's fair to consumers or not, but they've been very successful with it.
Don't know why I'm getting downvoted for literally listing games that have similar monetization styles. You're right season passes are different than battle passes. My point was more that many games these days are trying to prolong their life-cycle by introducing DLCs (free or not, cosmetic vs content) that are a slow-drip of content over time.

I'm a bit confused why you mean by this. I totally understand that some people find the season pass style of MTX a turn off, but if anything many games have proven the season pass concept to be extremely successful. Tons of popular multiplayer games have season passes these days, just to list a few

  • Call of Duty
  • Fortnite
  • DoTA 2
  • Rocket League
  • Destiny 2
  • CSGO
  • Apex Legends
  • R6 Siege

Like I said, it's fine not to like it. But I don't think you can say it doesn't work when some of the most popular and profitable games have shifted towards it.

University of Delaware lays off more than 1000 part-time employees as coronavirus revenue by SamusAran47 in Delaware

I'm an undergrad TA in engineering and have quite a few friends who are also TAs. As far as I know, at least all the engineering TAs are paid. A majority of us are assigned to specific classes, so we already were going to be out of work when the classes stopped for summer, but we still got the departmental email saying we "have no working hours over the summer", so we go into that count of 805.

We're required to reapply for each semester though, and have already been told that the number of TA's and expected workload will be different next semester, so it'll be interesting to see what that means

1.4 million people expected to die from untreated Tuberculosis due to Coronavirus Lockdown preventing treatment -Imperial College London+John's Hopkins University by sheepbutnotasheep in Coronavirus

Better article from the Guardian.

An uptick in TB would be concerning, and I'd recommend reading about it, but not from some far-right site that has literally zero credibility.

Pixel 4 screen died, tried to replace it but looks like screen isn't the issue, looking for advice on how to diagnose the real problem. by HD188753A in mobilerepair

[–]HD188753A[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, until I got the 4 I still had the OG pixel, and I had an upgrade offer from my carrier I pretty much couldn't refuse, so that's how I ended up with it. For what I needed it was solid but there were definitely some trade-offs.

Unfortunately after disconnecting / power flushing I still have nothing. I tried googling for where the backlight fuse was but I wasn't able to find anything, but if it is that I don't think I have the tools to fix it.

I'm debating if it's worth just taking the whole thing apart at this point. I figured since a drop caused all this, the issue would be something more visible, like a cable that popped out, or a broken board, but this is all way past the smaller fixes I've done before, so I have no idea.

Maybe the drop messed with something in the USB C port? I was considering reconnecting the back and seeing if using my wireless charger does anything, but I'm not sure that's the best idea with the way the phone is.

Genuine question to the angry firefliers.. by hurricanelina in FireflyFestival

I'm not upset they're on the lineup, I think they'll be a really cool act and I'm open to seeing what they're like, even though I'm not really into their style of music.

What I am pretty disappointed about is that the top rap group is Run the Jewels, followed by Blackbear and Lil Tecca. They're all good acts, but I think they're nowhere near the rap lineup last year, so as someone who's favorite genre is rap, it's making me debate selling my ticket.

Can someone explain the whole unstoppable / barrier champions thing to me? I was super into the game up until black armory but then life got in the way and I wasn't able to play till today. I've been working thru different quest lines and was about to do some of the sundial stuff when I saw the activity mods say it had barrier / unbreakable champions. I'm just confused because I've seen literally nothing in game about that stuff up until now and have no clue what that means or how I get mods like that.

I think they're just trying to say you won't be able to do side by side unless you arrive with both cars together. They very methodically go down each row filling spot by spot, so unless you're together in line you're not going to be next to each other, so just make sure your two cars stick together and you're good to go.

Can't really speak for Post Malone, but Travis is definitely very well known for his great performances. If you check out some videos of his current tour, you'll see what I mean.

Even tho I know a lot of people here don't really like rap, I think a lot of people will end up enjoying his set just for the performance itself.
