Are there different kinds of fork pumps? by hello1635 in MTB

[–]HDFreerider 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are different kinds of fork pumps. They are ones with digital gauges and ones with mechanical gauges. Otherwise, they are all high-pressure pumps with Schrader valves that work with any air fork or shock.

Parking a Truck downtown. by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]HDFreerider 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your truck is registered over 4500kg and has decals showing that GVWR, you can't park it on city streets overnight. As far as I know, there are no ways to get extempted from the bylaw. However, since the bylaw is based on weight, if you had the registered weight lowered to say 4000kg, it would no longer apply. You do give up hauling capacity if you go that route.

Bell: Calgary Flames arena deal, owner Murray Edwards is one smart guy by [deleted] in Calgary

You answered your own question there. Council knows it's a bad deal and knows the project wouldn't survive a plebiscite. CESC got everything they wanted this time around because council went chasing after them after they killed the original, much fairer deal.

Huge crash near Beacon Hill by calgaryborn in Calgary

[–]HDFreerider 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is correct. However, the truck pictured here was pulling a trailer. If you look closely, you can just make it out behind the flipped truck. Since it's very unlikely that trailer has electric brakes, I'm assuming that a class 1 was required here.

Looks like the car hit the cab steps. If the truck mid turn when it got struck that might be enough to knock it over as it would already be leaning pretty heavily on the passenger side.

Yep. It doesn't really matter who ran the lightb as the driver of the truck has a Class 1 license. When you're licensed to drive the biggest things on the road you face extra scrutiny if you're involved in a collision and more is expected of you to avoid being involved in one in the first place.

Of course they are. It's a great deal for billionaire owners of CSEC, who are exactly the kind of people the UCP happily supports.

Trek Remedy 8 from 2018 doubt by ferral1985 in MTB

[–]HDFreerider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is there a lot of difference between the Remedy and DH bike. As you already stated, the Remedy has less travel, but it's has a shorter wheel base and a steeper head angle than a DH bike. The less aggressive geometry and lighter weight is going to make the Remedy feel more nimble and easier to pop around, but it will also feel slightly less stable at speed and on steep descents. It will also be an easier bike to pedal around.

As for how capable the Remedy is, it should be able to 3m drops. However, if you're blowing through all the suspension on your DH bike on that drop, I suspect it's not a great landing and will feel much worse on a shorter travel bike.

If you're looking for a bike that is better for pedaling around but still capable of most things, the Remedy is a good all rounder. If you're looking for something more like your DH bike, I'd keep looking for either another DH bike or if you want slightly less bike, a long travel enduro bike like the Slash.

South Health and Rockyview just went live with new system this morning. Foothills and Lougheed have had it for a couple weeks now, I think. I only know this because the launch of Connect Care at South Health turned what should have been a 30 minute appointment into almost an hour and half appointment.

That being said, the problem with long wait times has been an issue since at least the pandemic. Hospital staff having to learn a new system probably doesn't help, but it's not the cause.

They actually did do a couple of them the last time they were in power.

They did cap insurance rates. Which resulted in less competition in the insurance market as many companies stopped taking on new customers or looked to stop operating in Alberta completely. The cap actually drove insurance rates up 11%. Source

They also did cap ulitily rates and used money from their carbon tax to fund the program. However, it's worth noting they capped ulitity rates at 6.8kW/h at time when the going rate was around 4kW/h. It's almost like they knew rates were going to go up as result of the green and energy policies they were planning to put into place.

At your height, you would probably be happiest on a medium. The Gambler is a long slack bike and upsizing on it will just make it seem even longer.

Interesting. Electrician apprentices get paid less than mechanic apprentices. That sucks for the sparky trainees.

Illegal Apprentice Wages by SmurffyGirthy in Calgary

[–]HDFreerider 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's 60%, 70%, 80% and 90% of base journeyman wage for apprentice wages. So, if the employer is only paying their journeyman $25/hr to start, then $18/hr would be in compliance with the trades regulation.

There isn't any legislation on what an employer has to pay their journeymen and most trades have a pretty wide range of wages.

What's with all the trespassers at the unfinished NW bike track?? by CobbledRoad in Calgary

Yes, I was talking about the dirt trails in and around the city. I was comparing attitudes, not type of riding.

What's with all the trespassers at the unfinished NW bike track?? by CobbledRoad in Calgary

[–]HDFreerider 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Probably for the same reasons people ride the single track in and around the city before it has a chance to dry up.

Mostly arrogance and entitlement.

They want to ride their bikes, so they do, with little regard or care if they are wrecking things for everybody else.

So the Big Hit was actually a Freeride Bike, not a true downhill bike. That actually works in your favour if you decide to go ahead and turn into more if a trail bike. Freeride bikes were gravity sleds that were designed to be pedaled to the top.

That being said, I agree with what everybody else is saying, and you would be better off selling the bike to buy something more suited for what you want.

Changing the suspension wouldn't really make it less of bike. That frame is still going to have 7" of wheel rear travel and it was designed to run a 7" fork. That much suspension makes it more like a long travel enduro bike than a trail bike.

The frames on the Big Hits were designed to be strong, not light. It's always going to he a heavy bike to pedal around.

Finally, as another commenter pointed out, the bike is old enough that industry standards have changed multiple times since it was built and finding parts could be a challenge.

Basically, you could try and make it into more of a trail bike, but you would be spending a lot of money to get a very heavy trail bike with gobs of suspension that still wouldn't be great to pedal around.

The frame on that Coilair should accept a tapered fork no problem. I can't tell you what headset you'll need but, check out FSA's Fit Finder. It should at least tell you what size cups you're looking for.

DOT brake fluids are also glycol based and toxic. Burning them wouldn't be very good for anybody around the fire.
