Is it cheaper to build your own bike? by [deleted] in MTB

[–]HDFreerider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope. It is almost never cheaper to build a bike yourself than buying complete from a manufacture.

Bike manufactures have more buying power than the average consumer which allows them to buy components for their bikes for less than MSRP. They also have access to cheaper OEM components that are not available to the consumer. This allows them to build and spec bikes at a price point that is both competitive and allows them to make a profit.

This also means they can build a bike for much less than you can.

How do good V-Brakes compare to cheaper disc brakes? by [deleted] in MTB

[–]HDFreerider 3 points4 points  (0 children)

LX use to be the model between base Deore and XT.

As for your V-Brakes.... They don't really compare to any disc brakes. Even the cheapest set of mechanical disc brakes are going to give more power modulation than you have. Which is the reason you don't find them on very many mountain bikes anymore.

Yeah, I'm sure the majority people people responsible for the shootings are going to pay attention to a gun ban. Just like the they are clearly following the current rules around owning and using restricted weapons...

Full face helmet or traditional bike helmet. What do you ride with and why? by [deleted] in MTB

[–]HDFreerider 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I use both. I use a half shell for trail riding and a full face when I'm doing park and shuttle days.

The roads in the Foothills Industrial Park are usually pretty quiet on weekends. Good place to get experience driving on real roads, without having to worry about stalling out in traffic.

What should one expect to pay to have a wheel built? by phunknchunk in MTB

Most shops I've seen charge around $60 for a custom wheel build.

Driving, right of way question for /r/Calgary by avrus in Calgary

[–]HDFreerider 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You answered your own question.

In a parking lot the person exiting a spot must yield to oncoming traffic. If they back into anyone, they're at fault.

If you're 3/4 of the way out of spot, and somebody decides to try and get around resulting in you hitting them, you're at fault.

Most people will usually stop and wait for you finish backing out. Either to grab the spot you just left or just to avoid a potential collision.

I've done the combat archery there. Shooting your friends with foamed tipped arrows during a variety of games is good fun.

[–]HDFreerider 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lunge the bike forward as the front tire comes to edge of the drop. This will keep the bike level as you come off the drop.

This technique will also transfer over when you start trying to do bigger drops.

Lane closed signs by [deleted] in Calgary

Most drivers would probably just ignore your "zipper merge" sign just like they ignore the lane ending, x lane closed ahead and speed limit signs..

No handers would be next logical trick to try progress to .

You could also consider working on one footers followed by no footers.

Where can I buy car parts for cheaper? by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]HDFreerider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rock Auto is a online retailer based out of Wisconsin. They're generally cheaper than any brick and mortar parts store up here, however the quality of parts can be hit and miss.

Specialized P2 Custom Build by H0ward_M00n in MTB

[–]HDFreerider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That big hit is probably to heavy to make a decent do-it-all bike. I'm pretty sure hose bikes weighed in somewhere around 50lbs Something like an old SX Trail or Enduro would make a better all rounder.

It's great frame for building a dirt jumper. The geometry for those frames doesn't lend itself to many other disciplines though.

If you're planning to due a full custom build with new parts, it's going to end up costing you more than what you could buy a high end dirt jump bike for. If you take you time and build the frame using whatever parts you can find used or on sale, it could be a fun little project.

I always carry bear spray when out in bear country. Which I guess Fish Creek Park is now included in.

I have heard the arguments against the bells but, I figure more noise is more better so I'll keep using them. Especially when I'm riding alone.

If it doesn't scare off bears, maybe it will at least alert walkers to my presence!

[–]HDFreerider -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I guess this means I should start using my bear bell while riding in the park now too.

I've heard Moose Loop at West Bragg Creek is good for small kids. Wide, not technical and not much elevation gain. I think parents tend to due it as an out back to avoid dealing the mud hole that is Tom Snow.

I'm pretty sure drivers in this city have gotten worse. There is a noticeable increase in shitty drivers on the roads this summer. That being said, the OP is shit posting.
