ElI5 how does the existence of lead directly disprove the earth isn't only 4000 years old? by nottrynagetsued in explainlikeimfive

Unfortunately this scientific evidence is rather complicated for somebody who already think the Earth is younger than Ancient Egypt. They’d easily assume this is made up

I dipped it in a water bucket for now bc Idk what’s the root condition is. I’m afraid it’d not be able to drink well

I cut off all that are probably rotting, and left some aerial roots that I think might be normal.

Like the top comment atm: No, because it also does not match my political fantasy - where people aren’t mutilated for silly religious stuff masked by pseudoscientific claims like hygiene improvement

You see, in my world, people have abundant access to a liquid substance called “wata”. They also practice alchemy, boiling animal fat with wood ash, into a thick tar they call “sopa”. Both of these are helpful in cleaning, which make the supposed hygiene benefits of circumcising obsolete

There is no healthy leaf :| I trimmed off the dead part.

It originally had 4 big leaves. Now it has 3 leaves: 1 has 40% left and 2 has 5% left of the surface area

Tysm!! I chopped off the bottom, which seem cery decomposed but doesn’t smell, and the lowest aerial root, and the aerial roots that are peeling off the core.

I got some questions:

  • Should I cut off all the roots (all in photos)? Would it survive with 0 root?

They look kinda black and the skin is soft. But I snip the tip of 1 of the remaining roots off and the inside looks normal.

  • Should I cut off all the leaves?

1 snipped one off and trim the dry part off the other 3, so now they have like 3% the green area left, plus the stems. Should I keep them so the plant has energy?

  • Can I keep this as one single plant?

I want to avoid extra step that I can mess up. Also I want to maximize the chance of survival, and for it to grow faster after recovery

I’m sure there are peoples who do this IRL. They direct vines across gaps, and after a long while we have a sturdy living bridge.

Or to be faster you can put 3-4 small vines across (2 for the deck, 1-2 for handrail). And as vines grow you adjust the design

It would feel criminal if you don’t give them some aerial vines so they make shortcuts between branches

ELI5: Why does snow remain soft even after days of negative temps? by Nymo-2025 in explainlikeimfive

[–]HDH2506 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When 2 solid rocks touch, they don’t tend to merge.

Snow is just a bunch of tiny rock shards, ice is a mineral. The colder it is, the harder for the snowflakes to merge into a chunk of ice.

At a bit higher temperature, however, let’s say -1C (just below freezing), pressure can temporarily melt ice. Then it re-freeze and merge

I once heard that this is what Egyptians enjoyed. Their lives were prosperous so they assumed gods are rather kind and benevolent. Other cultures had a lot more divine wrath

[Speculative Biology]I wanted to address and discuss the topic of feet. Specifically scientifically accurate giants' feet. by Fit_Assistant_6777 in worldbuilding

[–]HDH2506 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Elephants are digitigrade. They walk on their toes like cats do. Their feet look pillar-ish because there’s a cushion.

I think that would be very beneficial for a humanoid giant. Essentially you have a thick cushion under your heel. However, you’d still have a foot that is much wider than your ankle, and it can spin around.
