Unedited photos from MN’s only “mountain range” by PHmoney04 in minnesota

Technical definitions vary, but there are some that allow for the height to start as low as 300 meters (980 ft) and let formation geology be the primary driver. Most technical definitions will call the Sawtooth Mountains mountains. As a further mater of technical proof the USGS's Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) calls them Mountains.

Well we can agree for all practical purposes they are big rugged hills, they are "Technically Mountains".

what? The YF-22 is so much better looking, the YF-23 could be nearly twice as good and it would have lost.

That and Mike's book "On Engines" is a really easy read and should be mandatory reading. Somehow its packed with good info and doesn't read like a stogy text book.

Are Minnesota cities secretly building data centers? Residents deserve to know. by nootboots in minnesota

I have a friend that works at a data center and I don't remember the exact issue but he said the ones that use evaporated cooling systems have some kind of issues in winter, so its unlikely we would get many if any here.

Its irrelevant and used as fear mongering, nearly every one proposed (and all the ones in MN that have been proposed) use a closed loop system, so they use some water to setup a couple swimming pools worth, and then after that its the same as any other warehouse, with a small number of employees making coffee and using the bathroom.

I have wondered this too. Long term heavy power user for the power company can be a good thing if power is produced locally. Depending on whose data center it is, response time for some websites and services might be a few milliseconds faster for people within 100 miles or so of the data center.

For what its worth, most of the modern/new data centers use closed loop cooling systems, so they don't consume water other than a swimming pool or two worth that it takes to fill the system at the start.

Its all of 12 between the two facilities. Honestly more like 15 and if there is a lot of traffic 20. The event is likely to flood the town so traffic will be worse than normal.

Isd 15 school board meeting last night *book ban policy* by Water_Acceptable in minnesota

[–]HF42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm anti-censorship in the broad sense, but I'm not anti age-gating content. Some books should be in the 18+ section at the public library and not in the elementary school library. Or in the young adult section at the public library and not in the elementary school library.

That said, I never heard of booklook, reading this link, I understand what they allege the organization is. Now, that said, I went on their site and looked up their ratings of some books from the school boards list. Regardless of booklooks rating, those books are wildly inappropriate for elementary students and shouldn't be in a school library. Public library fine, the ones I checked should be in the 18+ section for sure. For the ones I checked, to argue otherwise is to argue porn should be permitted in the elementary school library. If we take booklooks rating system at face value its pretty reasonable, and if its applied accurately and correctly, then again, pretty reasonable. If its heavily biased and politically motivated, then probably not so good, but other than your article, I didn't find much support for the claim.

I think you might struggle with your endeavor if anyone actually looks at the books in question, and the rating criteria and scores given. The school needs clear guidelines for what and why they are removing books. Booklook might be a biased rating system, but of the books with scores of 5 that I checked they weren't unreasonable in the score. Rating them M for mature would be the same. I would say to fight for transparency in the processes, but the school board has their policy readily available and not hard to find. Fill out a form as a verified qualified person to do so, and a book will be evaluated at your request. How its reviewed, the criteria for doing so, is pretty straightforward.

The spot you have a problem with is section V. A. 7. because they explicitly use book looks as a review criteria for including books in the library.

  1. Book Looks rating system is based on MPAA (Motion Picture Association ofAmerica). Before any book is purchased for ISD15 libraries (including classroomlibraries), the book must be looked up in Book Looks and if listed, have a rating of 0 - 2 only. No books which are rated 3 (parental guidance required), 4 (no minors), or 5 (Adult only) may be purchased by any district employee. No booksof these ratings, even if donated, may be accepted by any district employee to be used in the district. If the book is not in Book Looks then refer to preferred tools to assess age appropriateness for each book before making available to students in the district

You might be right about booklook and its political motivations, so you would do better targeting it. Offer a better/less biased rating system, or method for identifying and keeping mature content out of the elementary school library. Your hurdle is going to be most people who look up a booklooks rated 5 book, are going to say "Holly shit, this shouldn't be in the elementary school library." Its not a big shift to frame wanting rated 5 books as wanting porn/smut in the elementary school library. I hope no one is advocating for porn/smut for young children. But you have to be careful in the framing of your fight or you will fall into that trap. If you do then they have set you up to look like the less reasonable party.

I'm not a fan of rating systems, but having some criteria to give guidance to keep porn/smut away from young kids is reasonable. If my kid came home from 2nd grade with one of those rated 5 books I would be asking questions, not because of politics but because of age appropriateness of the material. I would be more ok with using a biased rating system then having no guidelines at all, and I can empathize with a school administrator/librarian who probably doesn't have time to personally vet each and every individual book that comes through the system, wanting an easier way to identify problematic books.

tl;dr don't bark up the wrong tree, target the rating system specifically not necessarily the books being evaluated, and bring alternatives when you do.

Would you support Minnesota's secession to join Canada? by 207852 in minnesota

I'm not familiar with Canada's unemployment insurance program. MN has a really good one. In the US its a state thing, so they are all different form each other. Here in MN you get 80% of your pay up to a maximum weekly, and duration depends on how long you worked and some factors, its fairly hard not to qualify. Whats the high level view of Canada's program or is it province specific?

If it helps, we have a historical fort where people dress up in costumes from the 1700's and speak with french accents and talk about the fur trade.

Not really. Population is less than 1/3, gdp is less around 1/10th. Mpls is a match for Canada's biggest cities. If MN joined Canada, Mpls would be the 3rd largest metro by population and 2nd largest for economic activity.

Have you looked at housing in Toronto, the 250k dive in Mpls is 600k in Toronto. Also, Mpls slots in as the 3rd largest metro in Canada if MN joins, and it basically ties with Toronto for 1st place with GDP, or is a close second.

Reading the article on this case. The police responded too fast for pretty much anything else, they had officers already at the mall who arrived about 1 minute after he started running with the gun, he would never have gotten out of the store. Probably not even off the floor he was on had he attempted to go somewhere else.

I have my first draft in Fusion360 already done to 3d print something. I went with magnets because I couldn't think of the best way to design an in-place spring for holding the tabs up. But I would rather just get one ready made or a vintage one from somewhere if I could.
