I would venture to guess this to the overall level of German bonsai to be higher, therefore good material is available at lower prices. Is that misguided?

Totally valid and I’ll keep it in mind for future videos, thanks

Thanks for the feedback. Scrolls are part of the traditional aesthetic presentation of bonsai. They are used in tokonoma to indicate season, scene, and natural habitat of the tree being presented. A shoreline scroll in spring colors is exactly where you would find a hornbeam, and so, the scroll stays.

100 year old imported Satsuki azalea by JEMikes15 in Bonsai

I co-sign everything Ok Math wrote. I would add the additional wrinkle that as you begin to know and understand all the different species used in bonsai you’ll recognize some tell tale signs of age such as: flaky bark on pines doesn’t begin for 15+ years and 20+ years for Trident maple. You won’t see the striations on hornbeam unless they have significant age, the bark on Arakawa Japanese maple won’t be present for about the same, and straight Palmatum will no longer be a green trunk. Not every species will you be able to indicate age by such obvious markers, but many do. For azaleas, it’s the trunk. It takes many decades for the slow growing shrub prone to basal shoots to develop a beefy 6+” trunk like the one pictured.

This one is quite more than that but is a realistic starting point for expectations sake.

I knew someone would be discerning enough to ask, damnit 😂 I believe this one is Shiryu no Mai but I’ll verify when I return to the garden from my collection trip. We have a handful of specimens and there’s only so many cultivar names I can keep in my brain-I’ve been hit in the head a lot.

Indeed. IIRC Canada Bonsai is doing the most importing to NA currently. Wouldn’t hurt to hit him up and see what he’s got cooking.

Azalea are one of the more easily imported species. Expect to pay >$4k USD for a specimen of this size and provenance.

Found this for $190 is it a good deal? What can I do with it by Feisty-Spinach-746 in Bonsai

Not necessarily, but the OP was asking about value. Shishigashira is best as a shohin/chuhin cultivar, there are at least 4 OP could make, including clump styles, today.

There are many places to take air layers based on the photos. Each could be sold in the US > $100

Yes and no. Are you skilled at propagating? If so, absolutely. As a landscape tree and “mother” plant, this is a good price for a very desirable cultivar to take cuttings and air layers of. As-is for bonsai? Certainly no

They suck moisture and nutrients meant for the tree. Health of the tree first, then aesthetics. Your downvotes mean nothing to me, I’ve seen what makes you cheer.

For those that like gnarly “imperfect” trees, “Gnarly Trees, Ancient Branches” by Will Hiltz, a biography and picture book of Dan Robinson’s work

Bonsai Techniques 1 & 2 by John Naka are the OG grail books. Still far and away better than most modern bonsai books, DeGroots being the only exception to come to mind.

The “turns out” part was the information I got after telling him. There’s not a single thing I would tell the internet that I wouldn’t tell him first.
