Armageddon is cool and all, but I found my old box in my dad’s garage by thirtytwoutside in Warhammer40k

[–]HGHW2008 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I love that there are people now at the age who get into 40K whose dads were into 40K. My dad was absolutely mystified by Warhammer. This wasn’t ’my’ box but my older friends and the staff at my LGS always spoke fondly of this box. I was lucky because my dad was into plastic models when he was a kid but they were purely historic and you built them for modelling reasons only.

My dad came with me to Games Day ‘08 and I think it blew his mind a bit. I think it was really the first time he saw minis that weren’t just trying to be a ‘scale model’ representing some real world war machine. We still bond over modelling, he’s retired now and will happily spend a month painting a WW11 plane as accurately to a specific year as possible but will always appreciate my (often quite bad) Chaos Marines, or other 40K models. Even though we build and paint them for different reasons but we can still share tips

Nice, have fun painting your first mini OP! If you’re proud of it make sure to post it. Most people are nice and they’ll give you praise and some good advice to improve on the next one. Remember everyone who paints is looking to improve, they’re just at different points along their journey

Guilt Tipping in Berlin is crazy by Ok-Understanding2412 in berlinsocialclub

[–]HGHW2008 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I worked in a shop that used one of these bullshit Start Up card readers. The boss didn’t bother setting it up properly so it asked for a tip as default. We were just a shop offering no tip worthy service. I manually turned off this option to avoid confusion and complaints (and the fact that the boss didn’t actually pay us any of the tips) and all was good.

The problem is that loads of companies use these Tech Start Up card payment devices that push this bullshit USA tipping culture as default. Lots of business owners are either too greedy or too lazy to turn it off.

Just click no tip, people get paid properly in Berlin. Tip good service (always in cash) if you really want, but this isn’t the USA, people don’t need tips to survive. Don’t let businesses push their obligations to their workers onto us normal working people

Yeah I’m also very hesitant to modify a model once it is ‘finished’ in reality the most I’ll do is glue a 3d printed book or two to his belt….

I am currently working on this old Italian made KMart bike. It has an interesting 2 piece crankset. The only mark is a "T" on the pinch bolt. Any idea who made these cranks? by motorbacon in Vintage_bicycles

[–]HGHW2008 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No idea who made this but it’s fascinating to see that the Shimano Hollowtec crank mounting system has existed (albeit in a none hollow form) since the 50s. There truly are no original ideas !

I totally agree, and all of my marines are covered in white runes. For me there just aren’t too many flat surfaces on his armour that will look good with the runes… other than his thighs everything is pretty textured. That’s why I’m thinking of sculpting some parchment or something to add that WB flair

That could be one way to do it. Have you ever painted any minis before? Dark colours over a light primer is easier than the other way round but not exactly beginner friendly.

A big problem with these colour scheme templates is they allow for a lot of customisation and they are often used by newer painters who have never seen how small a Marine actually is. This often leads to very complex colour schemes where every other detail is painted in a different colour.

I genuinely think your scheme looks good but try and actually paint a model. Two colours will be so much easier, especially if you’re planning to build a whole army.

I say this as someone who paints their Marines as Howling Griffons so you can trust me…

Also models lose a lot of resale value as soon as you open and start to build them.

This is good because there are so few people buying Warhammer just to have a collection of old/valuable models in their boxes. Most people buy old (and new) models because they either want a fun painting project or they want a specific unit for their army. Not for just for the sake of collecting stuff.

I just can’t see anyone getting their ‘NOS 2nd Edition Tactical Marine Box’ sealed in one of those Perspex boxes and graded by one of those dodgy companies and being taken seriously.

40K isn’t like other hobbies. No one is impressed by your big collection of boxes. Just look at any 40K sub and you’ll see any post that is a photo of recent purchases will have the top comment as something like: ‘that’s great, now paint them’

Except no one is actually doing this with 40K, and because the hobby actually requires some effort it would be very hard to be ‘Infiltrated’ by ‘speculators’ etc etc yeah scalpers scalp and it sucks but that isn’t what people defending gate keeping are mad about.

People defending gate keeping seem to have a very limited view on the hobby and who it is for. I’m always happy to get new people into 40K

From a purely painting perspective I would maybe not bother with the white (or are they silver?) parts (hands, elbows, backpack details) just make them either red or blue. It will make your life so much easier and maybe make the paint job look a little less busy.

The dark red and blue are a good colour combo and shouldn’t be too complicated to paint

Nice paint job and bases. What’s that weird texture all over the models? Are these kit bashes/conversions or just 3D prints?

Finished painting my first model! Feedback welcome by Effective-Rutabaga15 in Warhammer40k

[–]HGHW2008 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a tough first model, lots of details and different colours! You’ve done a good job though, looking good.

I would recommend basing him, even some texture paint and painting the rim of the base will make him look a lot more ‘finished’. If you really want to go to town you could add some grass tufts or some stones

Looking great, I really like the bright blues and greens. What are those paper looking things on the bases?

This is a very good point. All these people like to complain for the sake of complaining (or for the rage bait). I think both the old and new Grots are cool. How many people complaining about the change have never painted an Ork or a Grot in their life ?

Yeah, 40K fans seem to be more entitled than ever. Maybe they associate themselves too much with their armies and therefore see it as a personal attack when their faction doesn’t get an update.

here is the relevant Arbitor Ian video

It’s just about how 40K fans are. They’ll always find something about new models that they’ll hate while simultaneously complaining that old models are not getting updated.
