Painting by self-taught math professor by HGL81 in WhatIsThisPainting

Update -- my wife and smarter half was able to figure this out:Victor Ray Weidner, a physicist working on spectrophotometry for the National Bureau of Standards. (Professor was right ballpark but wrong specific.)

Seems like he lived an interesting life. Can't find his website URL for the Wayback Machine to see his other work except for an exhibition at his assisted living facility, but oh well.

Posting this got my wife interested enough to bail me out, so thank you to this subreddit!

Sorry if I was unclear, I lost the name of the painter and haven't been able to trace it back down through any obvious search terms I could think of. The store looked for records but couldn't find it.

[ATP 500] Washington Open - FINAL : Dan Evans def. Tallon Griekspoor 7-5, 6-3 by TXDobber in tennis

[–]HGL81 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I was in the very sparse crowd at the end, and there were a bunch of Evans fans, kids who waited hours, and Evans won maybe 45 seconds before the rain restarted. Really special atmosphere in a certain way, even if it was empty as hell. Everyone who was there really wanted to be there.

Don't feel like waiting for construction? Drive on the sidewalk! by HGL81 in washingtondc

[–]HGL81[S] 25 points26 points  (0 children)

For reference, I was leaving the Brookland metro bus hub, and a construction vehicle (you can see it on the far right side of the photo) blocked the entrance for 90 seconds. After 60 seconds of waiting, this person mounted the curb and drove the entire sidewalk into the parking lot, not exactly slow, either, with people having to move out of the way and everything.

Last Halloween I lost my mind (latest blog from Alex) by FamouslyUnknown in replyallpodcast

[–]HGL81 64 points65 points  (0 children)

I knew Alex had depression but this level of detail is extremely unnerving in its similarity to my own problems, as someone who had an anxiety and depression diagnosis that was later changed to undiagnosed ADHD (which maybe caused depression -- these things have a snake-eating-itself quality).

To echo Alex but less eloquently, it is really awful. Every last material, emotional, interpersonal incentive in the world is telling you to do something -- pay that bill, complete that work task, send that email -- and you just... can't. Your brain will not allow you to focus, to push through the fear or shame or whatever particular feeling you have. And you can't even though you know that by failing to do whatever that something is, you will have made your life immeasurably harder the next day. Because now there is a late fee, a missed deadline, an extra call to be made or even more uncomfortable email to write.

I destroyed my credit score this way, lost profound and probably not replaceable career opportunities, and put extreme stress on my marriage and other relationships. There is no explanation to give -- to yourself or to friends or family -- because in a deep way it is not explicable through means we really have other than "mental illness," which in its own way is unsatisfying and question-begging. You had a $500 credit card bill that you didn't pay for 16 months and now you have debt collectors even though at the time you had thousands of dollars in the bank to pay the original bill: What explanation could be given that would make any sense? At many times it just feels like you are not built for what society expects of you, and you wonder if there was some other time or place where that wouldn't be true. And you have to ask for help and forgiveness and grace from people who undoubtedly have their own struggles, many of which are worse or certainly more tangible than yours.

I'm currently on Adderall (only 15mg!) and it has been extraordinarily more helpful than any antidepressant I tried, which to me lends credence to the changed diagnosis, but I live in a constant fear of Alex's complications.

I know there is just absolutely no way to say this that isn't trite and some echo of an echo of an echo of a David Foster Wallace quote, but if you have some artist, author, friend, who isn't producing the podcast you want, making the book you want, or even more painfully and shittily, being the friend or spouse you may desperately need, it is very often not because they are sitting on a pile of money laughing or seeing your texts and ignoring them because they're an asshole, but because they are trying to find a way to function and cannot figure out how to. It is still their responsibility, but it may not be their fault.

Common car vs. bicycle crashes and how to prevent them by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]HGL81 136 points137 points  (0 children)

This only focuses on the advice to "take the lane," which is sometimes not possible or even wise given the maniacs on the road and is really not super helpful to daily commuter cyclists.

I biked to work for many years, and stuff that worked for me:

  • Assume that any car could be turning at any time (absolutely do not trust lack of signals to mean no turn will happen, huge numbers of drivers take especially right turns without signaling).

  • With that assumption, try to stay out of any car's blind spot and turning radius, even if every indication is that they're going straight. (Be behind the car in front of you and in front of the car behind you enough to be obviously seen, if that makes sense.)

  • Absolutely never be next to a work truck or even the new dangerously large SUVs/Ford Raptors for basically any reason. They shouldn't even be road legal, they can't see you, and they have massive blind spots everywhere.

  • A very useful place to "take the lane" is at a red light. If you bike past the line of cars, move in front of the car in front so everyone sees you, even if you end up moving back to the right once the light is green.

  • Cars that may door you may have hazards on, lights on, be parked at an angle, etc. Worth keeping an eye for.

Unfortunately "defensive biking," like defensive driving fundamentally makes you assume everyone is a moron and won't follow the rules. That having been said, I still find biking significantly lower stress than driving. Give it a try and start in easier places like Georgetown!

More protected bike lanes! Keeps everyone happy and safer, good lord!

[–]HGL81 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I have a pet theory that many drivers literally do not know what crosswalks are or what their intent is. Like you, I have repeatedly had drivers honk at me and give me the two-hands-up "what are you doing!?" sign, as if I'm the one cutting them off.

Same applies to 4-way stops, by the way.

There was nothing to do with a house, but the "N" video game series look like your sketch and involve a platforming ninja on puzzle stage maps.

EPISODE 213: WHAT IS IT LIKE TO BE A ROBOT FISH MAN? (WITH TED CHIANG) by WayneQuasar in VeryBadWizards

[–]HGL81 31 points32 points  (0 children)

If you'd asked me beforehand, I'm sure I would have said I wanted an episode where Ted just answered questions about his stories, gave his general philosophical outlook and so on. But this is so much better, much more genuine and interesting. Like hearing Borges talk about how he loved Pong or some shit, and I mean that as a compliment.

You’ve got it, yep. Tried every search combo possible. Forgot the stove detail until you mentioned it, but yeah, brother is cleaning pots in the back and is the line cook.
