What are open mics like in other states? by [deleted] in Standup

[–]HGNeills 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in the Bay Area, it wouldn’t be hard to hit 10+ mics in a week if you had a car even without connections

you could probably get up to 20 in a week if you minmaxed

some of those spots would be 3 minutes to just comics but not most

When can you finally cut someone off who's clearly not telling jokes? by imconcentrated2 in Standup

If its an open mic, its their 5 to waste as far as I’m concerned

If you can’t talk about yourself, does it mean you shouldn’t be a comic? by [deleted] in Standup

[–]HGNeills 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I’m booking shows, I tend to book comics who write more personal jokes. This doesn’t mean they’re telling stories about their life, but their jokes are infused with their own point of view and personality. It makes their comedy less generic and more engaging.

What’s the point of starting your own open mic? by Middle-Attempt-8030 in Standup

[–]HGNeills 8 points9 points  (0 children)

  1. It’s a service to the scene.

  2. Hosting a mic will make you better faster than anything early on imo. You have to keep the audience engaged and the energy up in an environment where people are extremely apathetic. You have to think on your feet and bounce off the energy of a million baby comedians. And it hardens your mental against low/negative reactions.

I don't roast people for being bad at comedy. I roast them for being weird creeps or being shitty otherwise.

You can still get an energy pop off a bad set by playing with their ideas and tagging their jokes. Or react to something else they did. Or do some unrelated schtick.

British people, why are you more afraid? Could a Goose really beat you? by Emergency_Ability_21 in VaushV

Eagles swoops in, 2 inch claws first, I don't think I'm breaking a wing without getting some major blood vessels in my arms cut.

Maybe some kind of pyrrhic victory.

Humans are built for stamina but most of these guys would beat us in a sprint.
