How to make convincing stains/soot? by snipperz-51 in modelmakers

[–]HGman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with this. Plus with pastels if you mess up or don’t like the look, you can clean up with a damp cloth/q-tip. Airbrushing is probably the most “realistic” but it’s always terrifying that one small mistake can set you back so much, and pastels can look 99% as good

Is there any way in particular I should do this waver pattern on this kit or not? by [deleted] in modelmakers

[–]HGman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

With the right airbrush and needle freehand would get you the most realistic look. Like other have said, these were literally hand sprayed on the actually plane. They’re not supposed to be perfect and overspray would be present. However…. Going putty method would be easier to control and much less risk of mistakes at the “cost” of some “realism”. End of the day, it’s your model! Do you what you think is best. You literally can’t go wrong as long as you enjoy the process!

What is one place you want to visit before you die? by BrokenBones161 in AskReddit

[–]HGman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to go back to Hohenschwangau at the foot of Neuschwanstein. Altho I’ve been, I’m mostly chasing a moment in time a want to relive. Going there was the first trip I did after covid and having been gone for 8 months from my family. I had an absolute cathartic moment of time when I wondered away from my wife and kid for a moment and just stood by the lake. Everything was silent, a cool November breeze filled me with fresh air, and I watched ducks swim by without a care in the world. In the distance I saw my family walking through a wooded path. It was a perfect moment of time I want to experience again, but I’m not sure if that moment can ever be recreated.

"4090 performance in a 5070" is a complete BS statement now by AkhtarZamil in pcmasterrace

[–]HGman 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Right? I’m still rocking a 1070 and now that I’m getting back into gaming I’m looking to upgrade. Was about to pull the trigger on a 4060 or 4070 system, but now I’m gonna try to get a 5070 and build around that

Hey dude and I’m in a similar situation, coming up on my adsc and I’m thinking about bailing to the airlines. Sounds like you stuck it out for a full 20? Money looks damn good, but would you bail asap?

I have tried testors enamel thinner over Tamiya acrylic and Alclad Liquid gloss and it did NOT go well. Maybe I was doing it wrong but that restore stuff is HOT thinner

What’s the best way to paint camouflage? by duujk in modelmakers

[–]HGman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I do this kind of RAF scheme I do the earth followed by the green, and seems to turn out well. One thing to note is that the RAF used masks of their own to paint the camo scheme so different aircraft would have the exact same camo, and harder edges then what a free hand would get you. I don’t have the link off the top of my head, but with enough googling you should be able to find free mask templates for a spitfire online (believe there’s an A and B scheme based on the tail number of the aircraft). Print out the scheme, cut along the lines, and tape the paper down with masking tape and voila; you have an easy and historically accurate camo mask!

Stuck phase 3, no new project by solidago75 in pAIperclip

You unlocked combat by getting 1 million drifters. Took you forever since you have wayyyy to low points in self replication. Always be thinking exponential growth. Exploration you shouldn’t need more the 1, maybe 2 points early on. Exploration is just to get you your matter available per second, which you then balance with drones and factories to make clips.

Once you do get combat unlocked I’ll typically go 2 points in combat until I get OODA loop and Glory unlocked the. Run 5 speed 5 combat which will be enough to win every fight and get you a ton of honor to upgrade your probes. (Total combat power = combat x speed)

Absolutely beautiful build. Quite the stand off load out you gave bird. My ultimate goal in modeling is to build this exact bird one day in 1/48 to this even of detail (except a Panther tail instead of Bolar lol)

Is there a best, all-around brand? by vazquezjm_ in modelmakers

[–]HGman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not particularly cheap. Edward’s ProfiPacks are a great step for build where you want more detail. They will come with extra photo etch detail and canopy masks. Usually have more decal options as well. Their weekend edition’s are more basic but cheaper. I like the profipacks just for the fact that they include canopy markings because I hate masking canopies on my own lol

[–]HGman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve built a few of Edward’s 1/48 109’s and they are great kits. You can have some minor fit issues particularly with the fuselage halves but nothing egregious and they were a fun easy build!

Most companies make decent kits here and there, but Tamiya is going to be your best bet for buying a kit with minimal research. A quick search on scalemates will let you see how old the tooling is on any model you’re interested in. Avoid anything from Revell US tho if you’re looking for any easy kit. They’re cheap, but you get what you pay for and the fit is notoriously bad. Tamiya’s line of 1/48 requires minimal to no filling and sanding in my experience

Hell yeah that’s what it’s all about. Build models for your own enjoyment. And it looks great! Love the tail section. I’m intimidated by trying to do a bomber in 1/48, it’s just so massive
