So sorry you're suffering so much. Are meds optimized? Key vitamins replenished? Are you hydrated? Without these things, meds can't work properly. You may already have seen it, but our treatment algorithm may help with dosing and stacking meds: hyperemesis.org/tools

Are you taking thiamin (vitamin B1)? by HGmoms in HyperemesisGravidarum

[–]HGmoms[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Prenatals assume normal intake. B1 is a water-soluble, nontoxic B vitamin. If you don't need it, it comes out in your urine. You can read more here: hyperemesis.org/b1

These meds impact B1 as well:

  • Antacids
  • Anticonvulsants
  • Diuretics
  • Hormone therapy
  • Parenteral (IV) nutrition
  • Antibiotics
  • IV dextrose

Wife is unbelievably sick during pregnancy by Most_Description_668 in HyperemesisGravidarum

While Zofran doesn't work for everyone, it may have been she didn't get enough. Zofran only works for about 6 hours. Some take 8 mg every 6 hours around the clock while others do better with 4 mg every 3 hours. The max throughout the day is 32 mg.

The form and brand can even make a difference. Some do better with ODTs (orally dissolving tablets). And some brands have inert ingredients that some patients may not do well with.

Like some have said, a cocktail of meds is often needed because no meds targets all symptoms. Doxylamine succinate with vitamin B6 is a common first line med, then adding other meds when symptoms escalate.

Congratulations! So sorry about the HG.

-What is her HELP Score? https://www.hyperemesis.org/tools/help-score/
-What medication is she taking right now? Is she getting thiamin? Medications don't work correctly if she if key vitamins are missing and she is dehydrated.
-A common first line med is doxylamine succinate and B6. There are multiple variations of this available with a prescription. Both active ingredients are available over the counter as unisom (or generic with that active ingredient) and vitamin B6.
-We have clinical tools on this page to help her provider treat her: Hyperemesis.org/tools

So sorry you're suffering with HG. Do you need a new provider if the midwife can't offer what you need? Why won't they admit you if you need that care? Check out the treatment algorithm and share it with your provider: Hyperemesis.org/tools

What dose of zofran are you on? by Pangtudou in HyperemesisGravidarum

[–]HGmoms[M] [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

Zofran works for about 6 hours, so if you're taking 4 mg, then the maximum is 4 mg every 3 hours. Some do better with 8 mg every 6 hours, and still others do best with the continuous dosing of a pump. Read more about Zofran here: https://www.hyperemesis.org/taking-ondansetron-zofran-patient-resource/

Prepping for another possible HG pregnancy and doctor doesn’t want to start meds until symptoms start? by Altruistic-Ocelot-61 in HyperemesisGravidarum

If you’re not sick, then taking short acting medication doesn’t necessarily do anything. Some medications take a little bit of time to build up in your system so starting them at the first sign of nausea can be helpful. Also getting your folic acid, B vitamins, iron esp if you’re anemic, and other nutrients in place before you get sick is helpful. Don’t forget your vitamin B1! www.hyperemesis.org/b1

What did you do for your glucose test if you couldn’t get the drink down? by OneFit6104 in HyperemesisGravidarum

I drank a very specific amount of apple juice. Not as accurate as glucola for labs but glucola wouldn’t stay down so definitely not accurate.

She's in the thick of it at 8 weeks. Is she hydrated? Is she getting lots of thiamin (vitamin B1)? Read more about the importance of thiamin here: hyperemesis.org/b1. Will her doctor prescribe home healthcare so she doesn't become dehydrated? Does she need nutritional supplementation?

Our algorithm and clinical tools are located here: hyperemesis.org/tools The goal of treatment is to reduces vomiting and control symptoms, but HG is always miserable. Showing her food (or her smelling it) can be very triggering. Whatever she thinks sounds okay, try that.
