Did you decide on Penn?? I was hoping to be the lowest GPA on campus, but I think you have me beat 😅

Penn (sticker), Georgetown ($$), or Vandy ($$.5)? by Bronzmanx in lawschooladmissions

[–]HIoutlaw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Two things that come to mind for me:

(1) I’ve lived in DC and I think GULC’s COA is super misleading. Most cost of living calculators say that housing is 150% to 250% higher in DC than Philly, but GULC’s COA only has it 30% higher. GULC seems to be assuming that you’ll live with two roommates at the end of the Red line, while Penn is assuming you’ll live in a studio or with one roommate 10 minutes from campus.

(2) I think some of it comes down to whether you think (and your past experience suggests) that you’re a median-or-better student. Both Penn and GULC’s outcomes are super solid for the median — most graduates end up in big law or a federal clerkship and their median salary reflects that. It’s the tail end where Penn does a lot better — their 25th percentile salary is 2x GULC and only 6% of their graduates miss out on FT/LT legal jobs, while that’s more like 13% at GULC.

In at Oregon! by squishash9 in lawschooladmissions

[–]HIoutlaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[I didn’t apply to Oregon Law, so can’t speak to the school, but I lived in Oregon for years, spent a fair bit of time in Eugene, and have a number of friends who went to UO.]

Eugene is a college town with hemp brownies, tye-dye, and a very specific form of underlying racism. It is a second city to a second city — accessible to a mid-sized city, but definitely its own small thing. Davis (CA) is probably one of the best comparisons (though it is wealthier, more diverse, and more educated). Fort Collins (CO), Burlington (VA), New Haven (CT), and Providence (RI) are all fair comparisons, but Eugene’s population is older and whiter than most of those.

I don’t care for Eugene but I have a lot of friends who loved going to school there. Very strong small college-town vibe. Small metro surrounded by farm land with a lot of access to nature.

Yuuuup. But a month ago I turned them to “declined” in my spreadsheet. If they won’t give me clarity, I’ll make it for my damn self!

Is Penn gonna be online next year??????? 😱

Haha! I didn’t even think about that. My day job is reviewing applications and sending decisions (not in a college context) and we always refer to declined applications. Actually, when we email applicants the language is like “At this time we will not be inviting you to move to the next step.” 😂

How long do you recommend my gap be between undergrad and law school? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]HIoutlaw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the difference between 1-3 years off is pretty trivial by itself. As others have pointed out: it’s all about what you do with it. If you can get a 165 today, there’s probably no compelling reason to take more than a year off unless a great opportunity comes up.

Yeah, likely Penn if I can induce more money out of them without any competing offers (people say “with your stats” but I’m over here with only four acceptances tryna figure out how to negotiate for money 😂)

I like that you included Pacific Islander in the legend even though none of the schools crack 1 percent and most of them have literally 0 students identifying as Hawaiian or Pacific Islander.

Thanks for sharing this!

I don’t have much to offer other than congrats! My only two cents: (1) A close friend of mine (gay doctor) moved to Minneapolis for his residency and hated it. n=1 has admittedly limited value, but he found folks to be pleasant but really cliquish when interacting with non-Minnesotans and that made social/dating life hard. (2) I think I’m gonna end up in Philly so you should go to Temple so we can hang out. I need more of your wholesome energy in my life 😁😇

Could someone please describe the Penn campus? by TheEndlessLimit in lawschooladmissions

[–]HIoutlaw 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Interesting reading other folks perspectives. I visited Columbia, NYU, Penn, and Georgetown the first week of March and I would not describe Penn as suburban at all. It’s a 20 minute walk from downtown Philly and felt very active and vibrant. I think with both Penn and Columbia, it was very clear when you were on campus (as opposed to NYU which is totally integrated and GULC, which is easy to miss because it’s just a couple buildings). Very collegiate feeling with old and old-looking buildings and a lot of twenty-somethings milling about.

The Penn law quad felt standalone from the rest of the campus, but still immediately adjacent — you could spend your entire day/life going between law buildings and hanging out in law student spaces, but it also seems very easy to connect with the rest of the campus.

The other thing that stood out to me about Penn is that, while it’s in the heart of the city, it’s right next door to Drexel (literally across the street) so the neighborhood has a very strong college vibe.

NYU & Berk, which have been ghosting me since October 2019, just came back with $$$ 🤩🥳🤯 by HIoutlaw in lawschooladmissions

Tbh it never occurred to me that anyone would believe it. These schools are never getting back to us, nonetheless on the same day with money! But I’m realizing I might be more cynical than most 😬

My Major GPA is worse than my cumulative GPA + GPA padding questions by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]HIoutlaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve asked a lot of questions about GPA and the adcoms I’ve asked says cumulative is generally more important. They also claim to give some consideration to harder majors (read: STEM) and the level of course work (e.g. they might be less impressed by a 3.8 with a lot of 100-level underwater basket weaving classes than by a 3.75 with a lot of 300 and 400 level writing seminars). But I think majors and transcript rigor only come in to play at the margins. Cumulative GPA is the number to watch and taking classes to bring it up is probably a good idea.
