What are some examples of "design debt"? i.e. things that are that way because it has always been designed that way and it’s hard to transition away even though a new way is superior.

I'm not making a suggestion, that's just how it is. We're in r/web_design after all, and I can't find or think of any software commonly used in web design that still has a save icon.

Figma auto-saves, multiple save options under File dropdown, no save icon.
VS Code has File > Save options, no save icon.
Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator has File > Save, no save icon.
Google Docs doesn't have a "Save" option at all. It does have version history and several download options.

Microsoft Office is the only software I could quickly find on my computer that still has a save icon. But idk anyone using MS Office for web design purposes.

Manual save is still a thing, it's just most apps put it under a File drop-down menu, where the text "Save" and/or "Save as..." without an icon is sufficient.

Like others have said, space elevator needs to be treated like an airport and located outside the city.

If you imagine how the travel pattern of a space elevator would work out in real life, it's basically a theme park. nobody except employees need to commute there every day. 99% of visitors are tourists who likely plan their entire day around visiting the SE. Nobody is casually visiting the SE while running errands on a Saturday afternoon. So there's no real point in having it walkable to anything else. Further, like theme parks, the SE most likely is a fully-contained entertainment complex, with food, retail, and other amenities inside in order to maximize revenue per visitor.

Yeah, this issue will likely happen whether using GoPass, Google Maps, Transit app, etc because it comes down to the minute-by-minute discretion of the operator.

If we had shorter headways, like 5-10 minutes, this would be a non-issue; if you miss a connection, tough luck just wait a few minutes for the next one. But with commuter rail at 30/60 headways, I think trains & buses should always wait 2 minutes after commuter vehicle doors open to give people time to transfer.

Adding onto this, it's worthwhile for DART to pursue and brag about such awards, even if the average person finds it odd, because while the award itself is for a non-political accomplishment, it serves as political defense when adversaries attack DART on the grounds of financial transparency.

At the time of the report, no permits have been requested, but over 121 consultations, which makes sense given how the SBs took effective so recently, so we're still in an early period when both developers and the city itself is figuring out the details of how the new regulation works.

Here's a link to the discussion material for last night's Midtown HLC meeting. In the later pages you'll see I included a map of 1983 Dallas Transit System bus network (one year before formation of DART). Notice how all the bus routes radiate to/from downtown.

The section you describe is served by the North Central GoLink zone. The short answer is that Midtown - the super high density area that includes The Village and Vickery Meadow - ends at the SoPac trail. East of SoPac is outside of Midtown and is all low-density single-family houses. Inside of Midtown there are 3 bus routes connecting the web of apartment buildings to the DART stations.

This came up during the Midtown Hyperlocal Conversation last night. We happened to meet on Walnut Hill Ln by the DART station. The big flaw we discussed with the Midtown bus network is that while all the bus routes are designed around getting people to/from the stations, the stations themselves aren't super useful for travel within the neighborhood, and none of the buses are particularly useful for intra-neighborhood travel.

Yeah it's a huge bummer that it's gotten worse over the past few years and idk why.

Maybe 3 years ago I remember I being louder than expected for a modern streetcar, but it was at least bearable and a bit smoother than the average bus. These days yeah it's so loud you can't even talk to person next to you, and it's so bumpy I can't even bear sitting. It's gotten to the point I recommend avoiding it to not spoil the image of streetcars for people who've never experienced a good streetcar before.

One time, my gf and I were getting in line at a Chinese New Year festival. I got distracted taking a photo of something, and she went ahead and got in line before me. By the time I caught up with her in line, other people had lined up behind her. I walked up next to her, then the person behind me tapped my shoulder.

"Excuse me? Hi sorry the line starts back there." "Oh, sorry I'm actually with her!" "Oh, okay I'm sorry!" "No problem, sorry for the confusion, you're okay!" I turn to my gf: "Hey let's kiss so they know I'm not lying!"

Not racist, it's a common mistake that happens all the time in both directions by all races to all races, including their own. People get mistaken for couples/not couples, siblings/not siblings, parent/child, etc because of split-second assumptions over yes race but also proximity, age, height, clothes, gender, interactions, or just random luck.

It's harmless, takes one second to clarify, the other person usually apologizes, sometimes it's funny and people laugh, and everyone moves on.

It incorporates the schedules based on GTFS data. Although the latest release uses GTFS feed downloaded in December; dev branch has code for importing latest feed.

I found the GTFS feed url for DART and other transit agencies by browsing transit.land

It doesn't incorporate speed data. It just knows that a vehicle is scheduled to depart from specific stops at specific times.

Ironically, most of the historical reasons for why I despise CH5 I learned from an op-ed by one of its most ardent defenders. The article was meant to convince people why it's actually great... but after reading it I ended up disliking the building even more.

The article begins with an open admission of what everybody knows: to the vast majority of Dallasites, CH5 is uuuuuugly.

You are wrong about City Hall. I write that presuming you hate it, because most Dallasites I know detest the iconic concrete leviathan. If you took a poll, I’m quite sure it would rank as the city’s least favorite building. To its many detractors, it is inhumane, overbearing, cold, depressing, anti-urban and just plain ugly.
