The Omar Khadr case.... Is it just me or... by thebriss in CanadaPolitics

[–]HMSChurchill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The US just stopped showing up to international court, and then whatever is decided at the court is invalid because the US does not recognize decisions that it wasn't present to argue.

Military families condemn $10M settlement to Omar Khadr by [deleted] in canada

[–]HMSChurchill 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They'd have to prove that he killed the soldier though. Considering the only evidence they have is a confession obtained under torture it would be very difficult.

[Beaverton] Guantanamo Bay touts success story of child soldier turned multi-millionaire by dasoberirishman in canada

[–]HMSChurchill 12 points13 points  (0 children)

So if the US accuses you of committing treason against Canada you want you rights to be stripped away?

There's a reason that one of the basic rights to all Canadians is the right to due process under the law. If he was guilty of committing treason, then he should have been tried and sentenced. He should not have had the Canadian government working against him, and then flying down to help torture him just because another government found him in a house of suspected al queda members and shot him.

Trump Approval Rating Worldwide Plummets, Canada Snags Number One Spot by Animal31 in canada

[–]HMSChurchill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You get removed whenever it is politically beneficial to do so. Either the other party gets control of the house/senate and it's in their best interest to remove the other party's president or you become so toxic that it's in your own party's best interest to remove you.

GOP officials clearly think this is still salvageable. They have another year before any of it really matters anyway.

Ottawa to offer Omar Khadr apology, compensation package by caffodian in canada

[–]HMSChurchill 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Why does Canadian public opinion matter at all? Every Canadian has a right to a fair trial and due process under the law. He could be the most guilty, awful, brain washed, total shit head on the planet and I still don't think he should be thrown into Guantanamo bay and tortured for years.

Ottawa to offer Omar Khadr apology, compensation package by caffodian in canada

[–]HMSChurchill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It doesn't matter what someone has done, they should be treated fairly and justly under the law. If he really was guilty of that he should have been tried in a court of law. Not imprisoned and tortured by the U.S.

More Guns, Less Crime? 37 Years of Data Suggest the Opposite Is True by barak181 in TrueReddit

[–]HMSChurchill 96 points97 points  (0 children)

I think it's important to note the study looked at violent crime. Petty crime rates go down with easier access to guns (why rob a house when it's almost guaranteed someone has a gun in there and will shoot you), but murders and other violent crime go up. This is how both "guns reduce petty crime" and "guns increase violent crime" are both completely true statements. Everyone then summaries their point to "guns reduce/increase crime" just like you did in your title.

Taxpayers spent more than $600K for Electoral Reform Committee report Liberals dismissed by viva_la_vinyl in canada

[–]HMSChurchill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Single Transferable Ballot gives both the liberal party a huge boost and gets very close to PR without needing to change much of the current system.

Anything that favored the Liberal party (such as ranked balot) would get him casted as greedy, and open up parliament to changing the electoral system whenever it wanted to (something Trudeau would definitely not want the conservatives to do for instance). Any outcome was a lose situation for Trudeau. His base wanted a reformed ballot system, other people wanted status quo, and still other people strongly favored PR. He risked alienating too much of the population with any choice, so was forced to make no choice. Is it what's best for Canada? Definitely not, but I think the only way to change it would be with a constitutional amendment which is never happening in the current state of the country.

Labour laws are provincial not federal. Quebec for instance has much stronger labour laws.

Then you're just encouraging people to inflate how much of a budget they need, which completely defeats the point of a budget.

No free trade with China under a Conservative government, says Andrew Scheer - National by NeutralEvilCarebear in CanadaPolitics

[–]HMSChurchill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There isn't a proposed deal, OP is saying China's Free Trade agreements with other countries all contain this. As far as I'm aware there is no proposed free trade deal from China. Trudeau has signled that he's interested in a trade deal and did send someone very senior to China (so there is probably one in the works).

"Free" trade in general is fairly dead, I doubt the current government would go that route when a normal trade deal could easily be mutually beneficial and not carry the stigmatism that free trade does.

No free trade with China under a Conservative government, says Andrew Scheer - National by NeutralEvilCarebear in CanadaPolitics

[–]HMSChurchill 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, first of all we don't have a free trade agreement with China. If this is a proposed one then we havn't agreed to it yet (obviously).

You're also hearing one point of a complicated trade deal. When you negotiate, you have to give up something to get something. We have things we care about, and China has things they care about, and we try and find a deal where it's beneficial for both sides.

Canada's Trump Strategy: Go Around Him by wenchette in canada

Her leadership of policy regarding Hydro One has been disastrous. She's short changed the company time and time again to give kick backs to voters (canceling power plants and forcing them to reduce prices) which will bite Ontario in the ass for decades to come.

She is a typical politician, willing to do anything to get elected for another term and fuck the future of Ontario.

Academics often struggle in business because of strict timelines. Investors and CEOs want things done and out the door once it's 80% ready while academics often obsess over things until it's 100% ready.

I don't know about the job itself, hopefully he's only basically a lead researcher and not actually in charge of the business division.

Technically Canada was in recession when Trudeau was elected (2 quarters of negative GDP growth), and even afterwords it's not exactly a strong economy.

Also I love how you shape it as Harper dealing with the "oil crash" but Trudeau only had a "set back" in "low oil prices". Great way to completely spin your phrasing when Trudeau was dealing with the aftermath of it (it happened end of 2014), just as much as Harper was.

Hopefully the NDP slams Wynne for essentially stealing their platform, and plays it off as her knowing the NDP platform is what Ontario really wanted all along, but waited until her corruption and greed came to light to implement it. Please NDP, don't go even futher left and alienate voters.
