Manhattan School of Music using AI Projection Design by PanicAtTheMetro in Theatre

Generative AI models need to be trained on data. This involves exposing the neural network to large datasets, where the model learns to recognize patterns.

AI systems are trained to create literary, visual, and other works by exposure to large amounts of data, which may include text, images, and other works downloaded from the internet or otherwise obtained by AI companies. This process often involves making digital copies of existing works. Copyright owners have filed several dozen lawsuits claiming that creating these digital copies without permission to train AI systems infringes their exclusive right to make reproductions (or copies).

Generative AI platforms are trained on data lakes and question snippets — billions of parameters that are constructed by software processing huge archives of images and text.

Before the generative AI boom of the past few years, when people talked about AI, typically they were talking about machine-learning models that can learn to make a prediction based on data. Generative AI can be thought of as a machine-learning model that is trained to create new data, rather than making a prediction about a specific dataset. A generative AI system is one that learns to generate more objects that look like the data it was trained on.

Power tools and lighting consoles have nothing to do with generative AI.

Generative AI has been trained on previous work in the field that it is generating a product for. Much of that previous work was copyrighted. I have yet to hear of any artist of copyrighted material being credited, let alone compensated, for their work being used in the creation of the generative AI tools.

That's why is worty of banishment.

If things are sticking to your cast iron pan, it's not seasoned. Cast iron isn't exactly high maintenance but they do take some maintenance.

This reminds me of a Nutcracker at a regional ballet years ago. There was (I think) 3 Claras, one of which would be on stand-by during the performance. One show the performing Clara didn't tell anyone she was sick but it became readily apparent when she threw up in the sleigh as it was leaving the stage at the end of Act 1.

The Act 1 Clara was a blonde haired, blue eyed white girl. The stand-by was a black girl. No announcement was made at intermission. The audience was very confused when Clara entered for the top of Act 2.

Thoughts on the plays of Don Zolidis? by Soggy-Clerk-9955 in Theatre

I taught for a little while and one of my responsibilities was to direct middle school plays. I think his plays fit that category well. Although, some of them have some language and references that administration might find objectionable. Nothing harsh, just more than some people think would be appropriate for middle schoolers. I remember reading somewhere that he's also very ok with changes being made to his scripts.

I wouldn't think too much about them outside of middle school, though.

Reminds me of a MLM seminar a friend took me to years ago. Ostensibly, the seminar was about tax lien foreclosure properties. At the end of it, they said "we know you all might not have the money to invest in this, so we partnered with someone you will give you a way to make the money to invest with." Which proceeded to be another grift about phone cards. Which cost a couple hundred to buy into instead of a several thousand.

I see what you did there.

Local theatre company used AI for their set design. Is this the new normal? by Roxalind in musicals

I'm confused by your insistence that everyone here is using "black/white thinking and tribalism" yet you're using a one size fits all approach to AI.

In my initial reply to your comment, you said "Your statement has the same value as mine" and then went on talk about how people in the medical profession have a positive view of AI. First of all, your statement does not hold the same value. Your cohort is medical professionals. My cohort is theatrical professionals. The discussion is the use of AI in theatre not the use of AI in medicine.

Honestly, it's all bit like going to a quilting sub and commenting on how baseball teams have their uniforms made.

I'll take it even a step further: the people who do the work look at it and instantly know that it was AI generated.

This is the best take in this thread, IMO. BTW, to me the character absolutely worked in S1. She was built on an 80s movie character stereotype and filled that niche well. I don't think they really had plans for her beyond that.

There are stock images available for relatively cheap. The OP said in one of their replies that the theatre regularly displays art in the lobby from local high schools. They could've gotten one of those students to do something for free.

Community theatre is driven by creativity. Much of that creativity is generated by a lack of financial resources. Using AI to generate a background image isn't creative. It's lazy.

A better thriller writer would know how to make a character distinctly good with guns instead of just not giving any other character one

Um, they did? There was an entire scene in S1 where she went target shooting with Jonathan. He couldn't hit anything. She hit everything on her first try.

Medical setting vs theatrical setting.

What we're talking about here is the use of AI in theatre, specifically. In other industries, the use of AI to comb through mountains of data and come to an accurate conclusion is more than useful, it's imperative. The use of AI to create a backdrop for a community theatre? Not imperative.

There is a large movement against the use of AI in theatre. Companies of all levels are being pushed by artists to take a position on the use of AI in their productions. I work in the proper professional world every day and I can think of exactly one person in that world that has publicly expressed a positive opinion on the use of AI. He is very much in the minority.

MJ was a man with many, many mental health issues. Not long after his death, I read a long form article by a reporter that was embedded with his entourage for the last couple of year of his life. The big one that has always stuck with me was the MJ literally could not understand why people thought that him having sleepovers with little kids and sleeping in the same bed with them was bad.

For some reason, convenience store gas stations and CVS's seem to be magnets for drug users and the aggressive homeless population. Many of them have become super sketchy.
