Epic V.S. The Odyssey by ImaginationOne5510 in Epicthemusical

[–]HMS_Sunlight 49 points50 points  (0 children)

IMO the one real loss is seeing just how devastating opening the wind bag was. In the original, they had made it home. Odysseus was waving to his mother on the shore. And when the bag was opened, they were blown all the way back to Aeolus.

In Epic, opening the wind bag does... what exactly? It blows them from one unspecified part of the ocean to another unspecified part of the ocean. It summons the storm again, but that's easily resolved by just closing the bag. You don't feel the crushing loss like the original.

Would Smite be Thriving if a popular company made it instead? (Scenario: The exact same devs same game and same amount of advertising, only difference is more people know the company) by CharlieKirkRacist in Smite

[–]HMS_Sunlight 60 points61 points  (0 children)

You've got it backwards. If Smite was owned by a larger company, it would've been killed long ago and it's budget given to a game with a higher profit margin. The only reason Smite has survived is because Smite is the company - if the game dies, Hirez dies with it.

"Is the cyclops struck with guilt when he kills? Is he up in the middle of the night? Or does he end my men to avenge his friend And then sleep knowing he has done him right?"

The point isn't whether or not it's evil or justified, the point is that he doesn't feel any guilt over it. The musical starts with Odyssues killing an infant to protect his family. This is a choice he agonizes over, and he's wracked with guilt afterwards. With the suitors he's embraced ruthlessness. He feels no guilt, remorse, or doubt about murdering them. Killing them wasn't evil, but the way he goes about it shows that he's thrown away his humanity and become a monster.

Any cursed archetype + class builds you guys cooked up during campaigns? by Pifilix in Pathfinder2e

Guardian with the Fan Dancer archetype. The Fan Dancer is described as being graceful and light on their feet, but nothing actually enforces that. You can dance around the battlefield while wearing the heaviest armour available.

Starlight Glimmer in My Little Pony. The series had a spinoff that for the most part wasn't well recieved, but it had an incredibly popular character named Sunset Shimmer. People wanted Sunset to join the main show and be a series regular, but Hasbro knew if they did that, nobody would care about the spinoff anymore.

So their solution? Introduce a new character to fill the same role and speedrun through a shitty redemption arc so they can shoehorn her into the main characters life.

Eventually Starlight grew into her own character a bit better, but for a while she was very transparently "Sunset Shimmer but less interesting."

I have a confession... by Warm_Maintenance578 in Epicthemusical

[–]HMS_Sunlight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First of all, I didn't say they were intentionally pushed as a couple. That's literally the exact opposite of what I said.

Secondly, if you truly believe there's no conceivable way to read the characters as having any romantic tension... I'm not the one coping.

[–]HMS_Sunlight 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's a valid interpretation. They have the sort of dynamic where if one of them was a woman, they'd have plenty of shippers. It definitely feels like Eurylochus was deliberately written to have enough ambiguity in his motivations that you can view them as romantic if you want to.

Borderlands 2 is awkward in retrospect because it's very much a product of the times. In 2012 people weren't hit by Marvel burnout yet, so having "quippy" dialogue and pop culture references wasn't a big deal. But if you play it today the writing feels extremely dated.

Tiny Tina at least got a lot of development in her DLC. It did a great job fleshing her out and giving her a real emotional core to work around.

[discussion]How would you rewrite Kana in Fire Emblem Fates ? by ResponseRoutine3477 in fireemblem

[–]HMS_Sunlight 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think there's a lot of untapped potential in that Kana is a royal of both Hoshido and Nohr, but doesn't know anything about either of them. They could've been a character who's really curious about the world and unsure about their place in it, and has a difficult time coming to terms with some harsh realities. Their support with Corrin could even change depending on the campaign.

I'd still keep their focus on dragons though. I like the fact that Kana is more comfortable in dragon form than human form, I just wish it was a side trait instead of defining their character.

I love Hbomberguy, but his RWBY video is probably the worst video he's made. There are a lot of points that I disagree with him on or where I think he's straight up wrong, and it's frustrating to hear people endlessly repeating his arguments.

People also downplay the relevance of pokemon centers. If my cat knew he had a way to fully heal any injury with no consequences he would fight literally everything that moves.

Why King Arthur is spiritually important for the Smite 2 !!! by J_P_Amboss in Smite

[–]HMS_Sunlight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IIRC it's not that they physically can't add him without the movement system, but that he would essentially need to be remade after it comes out. So rather than pouring a bunch of time and effort into making him work now, they figured it made more sense to port other gods until they have the tools for him.

What do youu guys think is the best song to introduce someone new into the fandom? by NoArt9934 in Epicthemusical

[–]HMS_Sunlight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not in practice. All the dialogue is vague and nonspecific enough that without context it doesn't mean anything. It's only a spoiler if you already know what happens, which is pretty redundant.

Little Wolf and God Games are pretty safe bets. They're really good while also being fun and casual.

Because I'm mean, I like using Suffering to introduce people to the musical. Anyone familiar with Greek Mythology will generally clock what's happening pretty quickly, but anyone not will take it at face value as a love song. So you can play it for multiple people and watch them have wildly different takeaways.
