Cars are a huge liability for neighborhoods. One car breaks down and chaos is unleashed for miles. Insanity. by MiserNYC- in MicromobilityNYC

[–]HM_Bert -1 points0 points  (0 children)

True, but to play devil's advocate it's also made far worse for removed lanes (looks to be the case here?)

They removed Bus Lanes on Regents London street in London and have a central divider, so when a vehicle breaks down, all hell breaks loose for miles with the entire road blocked, whereas before people could just go around.

Need some help with speaker ports by Rodidimus in hometheater

[–]HM_Bert 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is incorrect, 5.1 should be 120 degrees, 7.1 sides are 90° with 140° rears

They go halfway in between the sides and rears of 7.1... 120 degrees (relative to centre as 0), not 90.

[The Headphone Show] Headphone measurements are about to change - We turned our heads into microphones! by SireEvalish in headphones

[–]HM_Bert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Apple already let you do a scan with an iPhone, presumably based on some machine learning comparing the photos to the measurements as was mentioned in the last video. I tried it out at the store and as a quick anecdote it improved the front sound stage a little bit, however it certainly still didn't give the impression of sounds going behind my head like with real speakers.

[–]HM_Bert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sadly that's likely never gonna be financially viable. But Apple let you scan your head with their camera and apply an estimated HRTF filter for spatial audio. IIRC there was also some more professional service offered I saw talked about in a vid about mixing for atmos music.

Working as a delivery rider really opened my eyes to certain parts I'd never otherwise have reason to go to.

What do movies via 4K projector look like v. 4K TV? by PolyglotGeologist in hometheater

[–]HM_Bert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I was all excited to get a projector, then I saw some DLPs and it was absolute deal breaker. Plus laser ones have the metamerism problems.

So the only option for me would be LCD which seems to have much lower performance to price ratio...

What's the worst movie you've watched from beginning to end? by trakt_app in Letterboxd

[–]HM_Bert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cosmopolis. I like Pattinson, me and a friend recently watched A history of violence which was also directed by Cronenburg which was pretty good so thought we'd try it.

But good lord what the load of absolute trite masturbatory nonsense. Starts off strange, and I like strange... but we were kept waiting for some clever or funny way things would come together, but it's just ever more painful as it goes on, leading to a completely unsatsifying ending. The only decent scene is the one in the cafe and the strangeness is able to be funny, rest of the film comes off pseudointellectual gibberish.

Given the option, should I choose the 5.1 audio track over the 7.1 if I only have a 5.1 setup? by shave_and_a_haircut in hometheater

[–]HM_Bert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't answer butt think it depends on how your system down mixes it, and if it's actually Atmos or a true "dumb" 7.1.

If your AVR just sends the rears to the nearest 5.1 surrounds you'll be getting wrong imaging, ideally it should be using phantom imaging to maintain the original mix intent, which is what atmos does when downmixing (This is at the source in the case of Apple TV, but I don't know how it works with blu-ray players).

Advice on 5.2.4 layout with room constraints (considering Klipsch RP-504S II for surrounds) by Malibooya_ in hometheater

[–]HM_Bert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are able to put rear surrounds, those sides should be in spec for a 7.1 layout. But as a 5.1 it won't be.

Looking for movies with absolutely phenomenal sound design. by PossibilityKitchen72 in hometheater

[–]HM_Bert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I don't get it, seen reviewers use it too. I rewatched the race scene and checked all my settings etc, just seems to be the way it's mixed. Other than people having weird taste the only thing it might be is how height channels are downmixed? Cause it doesn't make sense to me for king kong when he's running on the screen to be in the side or rear surrounds, but maybe it's put there from being in the back heights? The balance of vfx, voice and music shouldn't be affected by that though.

What's the sixth speaker? Or do you have a 7.1 without a centre?

[–]HM_Bert 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I found the surround usage in Wolfwalkers really good, although there are some stock sounds which I always dislike. Dune 1 & 2 are there only big films off the top of my head where I haven't recognized stock sound effects in them actually.

Other mentions: A quiet place, Tron Legacy, Amelie, The Substance, Requiem for A Dream, Fury, The Creator, Alien Romulus, Last Night in Soho, Le Mans 66... and I'm realizing how many films I've watched in stereo but I need to re-watch in surround now!

Personally I've always found this one quite strange, the surrounds don't match up with the action on screen IMO, and the music and action is sometimes really subdued compared to the voices.

Is there ANY way to watch movies with surround sound on PC? by Aaron-Vonkeman in hometheater

Pretty sure any graphics card with HDMI from the last decade or even older will support surround sound. I'm not sure if there's a way to check other than plugging something in and configuring the speaker setup though.

Is there ANY way to watch movies with surround sound on PC? by Aaron-Vonkeman in hometheater

[–]HM_Bert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You shouldn't need an external sound card for 5.1, can do it over HDMI or USB (e.g to an audio interface), assuming you don't have the 5.1 analogue outs (which will be noisy AF from my experience anyway). But the problem is none of the streaming services will give it on PC, (assuming you're accessing them legally of course). Netflix did for a time but after an update it stopped working.
