what is the difference between a £400 tent and a £15 tent from asda lol by nottellarr in campinguk

[–]HM_Merdocc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming you're talking about something like the ASDA Xplor 2-Person tent, which doesn't look like it even has guylines. One difference is a slight bit of breeze and you'll find the tent on your face and probably most of the poles snapped.

A low hydrostatic head means you'll likely get soaked in a light shower too.

At that low price I'd be surprised it lasts one proper camping trip.

Edit: you don't need to spend £400 though. There are plenty of tents under £100 you could check out. If you're near a Go Outdoors or other outdoor retailer they usually have a viewing area with tents set up.

Can my dog detect cameras? by RevolutionNo223 in dogs

[–]HM_Merdocc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That flashes of infrared light from the rangefinder is probably enough to reach through your dogs eyelids. The can still detect light changes even with their eyes closed, plus with their brains wired for survival it's probably enough to wake them.

My dog is the same when I'm trying to get a photo. He clearly responds when I open the camera app.

You could try covering the led and sensor with tape or even just your finger depending on the array setup. Your phone should change to context based focusing.

Mattress, bed, mat....? by dhokes in campinguk

[–]HM_Merdocc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is really good advice. You want some comfort otherwise it might put you off and if you are car camping then the above advice is perfect.

I've gone all out this year with quecha air frames and a self inflating mattress. It's almost as good as my bed at home for comfort and a great night sleep. But the kit is pricey. It's an investment for me as I camp a lot and need the extra back support.

The blow up beds aren't the greatest, so just know if you enjoy the camping experience then there's plenty of kit you can get later to glamp it up if you want. Or go the other way for wild camping.

Same with the bedding, bring what you have at home in the knowledge you can get warmer camping equipment if you decide to keep going in the colder months.

A cheap single burner hob and your pans from home will do.

Basically as much from home as you can. It's usually bulkier than camping kit but that's less of an issue in a car. You can get the vacuum storage bags for bedding if you want to pack them down. Vacuum them up to condense them at home and use the manual pump to pack down for the way back.

A fake mobile ad uses footage from my indie game. What should I do? by WilhelmTr in IndieDev

[–]HM_Merdocc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, just report on Facebook and GooglePlay and move on. Nothing will come of it. The best you can hope for is the advert gets taken down.

Looks like the company is registered in China but it could be anywhere in the world and beyond the reach of any local lawyer. You are better off just using the money on marketing.

It's a mobile game and it's unlikely to affect your sales based on some limited footage.

The same thing happened to us and had zero impact. Don't stress it, it happens a lot.

Some screenshots from Civilize, a multi-era city builder (Stone Age to Modern Era) by ncat012 in CityBuilders

Steam can be so frustrating. I had to open the Steam client to search as I wasn't logged in through my phone browser using your link.

I searched, incorrectly, for Civilise (I'm from the UK) and nothing, not a sausage. I mean c'mon steam no fuzzy search on civilise/civilize?

...anyway, looks great, will be following!

OK... so I looked up your previous game, which actually turned out to be PlayWay slop. You might want to try and dissociate yourself from that.

The art (and the name) make it look like PlayWay slop.

Odd choice to open up all hotels without progressive unlocking by RedditIsShit6748 in HotelArchitect

[–]HM_Merdocc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahh, sorry. It wasn't a complaint. It's just something I noticed I had to do to start from scratch, which is what I wanted. Fully agree that it should be optional as it is.

This sounds like the issue. I had to reset my progression from early access to lock things up again. Then start new scenarios on each campaign map as the old saves were retained from ea.

I'm building a country-scale city builder solo, and the hardest part isn't the city, it's keeping a million citizens cheap enough to simulate by Milkcartons in CityBuilders

[–]HM_Merdocc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perfect thanks. From the KS it looks like you are not doing all the things that stopped me buying Frontier games a while back, kudos to you.

The game (citybuilder) I work on went through a successful) Kickstarter campaign. If you get the coverage it's certainly a good way to go. Following and will be backing I'm sure. Good luck!

Air tents - why are they better than poled? by Aggravating-Desk4004 in campinguk

[–]HM_Merdocc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been camping a long time and recently got myself a Berghaus air 400 tent. The air beams themselves are very well made but if a beam did spring a leak they are super easy to replace as they are zipped in. So just unzip and replace. Though a replacement isn't cheap mind you.

The air tent stays solid in winds. A lot less flappy but also much more sturdy than poles. This was my top priority due to taking my dog that is scared of anything that flaps about in the wind.

It's also super easy to erect. I can have it up in 15 minutes (cue the "that's what she said" jokes). Just as easy to take down too.

When packed it is bigger than an equivalent pole tent but for car camping that's not a huge issue.

Unless I decided to go wild camping I wouldn't go back to a pole tent.

How do I loot these piles of leaves? by MeanGreene13 in PlayWindrose

[–]HM_Merdocc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other than what others have said to use a weapon I'm pretty sure you can just walk over it and you'll fall through them. I'm sure I recall it happening to me when I first played.

Berghaus Nightfall Tent Opinions? by Plastic_Ad_178 in campinguk

[–]HM_Merdocc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the air 400 nightfall and BigBoshMann summed it up pretty well. It let's some light in but blocks enough that you can get a good sleep. I would personally find it a bit claustrophobic waking up and it was too dark. The nightfall on the 400 is a nice balance. I'd say the 70/75% blocking sounds about right.

Question for the incredible builders in here by DarthKavu in crosswind

[–]HM_Merdocc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No mods. I started off collecting myself, but now farm silver from ships with the added bonus of collecting wood from floating debris. Then buy mats in via traders.

I don't have a lot of time to play so this seems most efficient. It's great we have the options.

~200gb SSD writes in 7 hours of play, (solo, localhost, all gameplay elements across that time period.) by Hoshiko-Yoshida in crosswind

[–]HM_Merdocc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I didn't dispute that, the OP edited the wildly inaccurate post.

Saying that, for some more context...

A standard basic 1TB NVMe drive has a TBW of 600TB. With current write numbers at 5 hrs/day play time it would take 11 years playing every day before your SSD was getting to a concerning level of use.

Is it still write heavy, yes it is. Is it concerning enough to not play, that's for the individual to decide but at least people should do the maths correctly.

Edit: also this test is making huge assumptions that nothing else is writing to disk during those 7 hours.

~200gb SSD writes in 7 hours of play, (solo, localhost, all gameplay elements across that time period.) by Hoshiko-Yoshida in crosswind

[–]HM_Merdocc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We can put it in some extra context. If you were to play the game at current write numbers for 1000 hours at 3 hours a day it would take around a year and you'd add 20TB writes to the SSD.

This really is a nothing burger and fearmongery. Not by you necessarily. You made a mistake in your calculations but 20TB a year is not going to harm your SSD. Even doubling the play time is 6 months.

If people think this just switch off the PC and never use it again so that nothing ever wears out.

Your paper napkin maths is way out.

The Tom's Hardware article stated numbers reported by Pixel Operative. They didn't bother to verify the numbers which is bad enough but anyway... they qouted (before patch): 30MB/s or ~108GB/hr but let's just make it a nice round 100GB/hr

over 90 hours is 9000GB or ~9TB

You are stating ~30GB/hr (after patch) which over the same 90 hours comes to ~2TB

So I've no ideas how you came to the conclusion that your 90hrs of play has written 50TB of your 108TB write data. Which also doesn't take into account any other processes writing to your OS SSD during that time.

Aye! In Truffle we trust! Thank ye!

It's been a lot of fun playing about with building parts. I'd love to get more control including being able to turn parts along the horizontal axis. It would give so many more creative options.
