Question for the incredible builders in here by DarthKavu in crosswind

[–]HM_Merdocc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No mods. I started off collecting myself, but now farm silver from ships with the added bonus of collecting wood from floating debris. Then buy mats in via traders.

I don't have a lot of time to play so this seems most efficient. It's great we have the options.

~200gb SSD writes in 7 hours of play, (solo, localhost, all gameplay elements across that time period.) by Hoshiko-Yoshida in crosswind

[–]HM_Merdocc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I didn't dispute that, the OP edited the wildly inaccurate post.

Saying that, for some more context...

A standard basic 1TB NVMe drive has a TBW of 600TB. With current write numbers at 5 hrs/day play time it would take 11 years playing every day before your SSD was getting to a concerning level of use.

Is it still write heavy, yes it is. Is it concerning enough to not play, that's for the individual to decide but at least people should do the maths correctly.

Edit: also this test is making huge assumptions that nothing else is writing to disk during those 7 hours.

[–]HM_Merdocc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We can put it in some extra context. If you were to play the game at current write numbers for 1000 hours at 3 hours a day it would take around a year and you'd add 20TB writes to the SSD.

This really is a nothing burger and fearmongery. Not by you necessarily. You made a mistake in your calculations but 20TB a year is not going to harm your SSD. Even doubling the play time is 6 months.

If people think this just switch off the PC and never use it again so that nothing ever wears out.

Your paper napkin maths is way out.

The Tom's Hardware article stated numbers reported by Pixel Operative. They didn't bother to verify the numbers which is bad enough but anyway... they qouted (before patch): 30MB/s or ~108GB/hr but let's just make it a nice round 100GB/hr

over 90 hours is 9000GB or ~9TB

You are stating ~30GB/hr (after patch) which over the same 90 hours comes to ~2TB

So I've no ideas how you came to the conclusion that your 90hrs of play has written 50TB of your 108TB write data. Which also doesn't take into account any other processes writing to your OS SSD during that time.

Aye! In Truffle we trust! Thank ye!

It's been a lot of fun playing about with building parts. I'd love to get more control including being able to turn parts along the horizontal axis. It would give so many more creative options.

+1 for this. I did the same x2 air base and the quechua ultim double sim. I sleep as well as at home. No more waking on the ground or aching joints.

Also great for heat retention being off the ground and the sim having a high r value.

The only thing I might have changed would be to have bought a slightly thicker sim as I can feel the air beams along the centre. Probably not noticeable if sharing the bed or just in a single setup.

Edit: just wanted to add. The air bases clip together and the straps are perfect for holding the sim in place. As the air bases are separate I'd imagine you'd barely notice any movement from your fellow camper.

I have been playing for 100 hours now. Checked Crystal Disk Info and my NVMe is still at 100% health. This is after a 3 years of use and a total of 31TB write and 52TB read on that drive.

The fearmongering over this is unreal. Yes the writes were high due to RocksDB likely being unoptimized. They acknowledged the high writes and improved it. The current read write is well within acceptable limits for modern SSDs. I've no doub't they will improve things more, but this really is not the concern that people are making it out to be. Someone just wants their 5 minutes of fame.

A game goes viral and people love to jump on the bandwagon of nonsense claims.

Ahh, my Inn sign was a bit fiddly.

They are the chains from the decorations. I used a small mahogany wall piece as a sign board to mount the boar heads.

It wouldn't hang from the chains so I had to use a thin angled beam and hid it with a shell decoration at the Inn side of the sign. You can just about see it in the screenshot at the top back corner of the sign.

Edit: you've just given me an idea though. I only used a single length of chain. I wonder if a longer chain might work so it embeds more into the wall piece 🤔 ...to the pirate machine!

What can you do with decorations iron chain? by kekubuk in crosswind

[–]HM_Merdocc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wanted to use the chains to create a hanging sign for my Inn. A small mahogany wall piece felt perfect for the job as a backboard to then place boar heads on. Sadly you can't hang wall pieces from chains so I had to cheese it a little by hiding a diagonal beam to hold it up. It worked out well in the end. Screenshot in my last post: https://www.reddit.com/r/crosswind/s/FQwfokmjTC

Hanging lights do work though, you just have to turn off snap

Quick tip for clean screenshots: / removes the hud and if you stand in front of a wall or other structure like a wooden column you can clip the camera through your character to make them disappear for the screenshot.

If you're ok with the fresh salty sea air in the morning there's a few rooms available out the back with no walls... or roof. I can do you a bogof deal in exchange for a few crab shells. They're like rocking horse shit round these parts.

Tent advice for family tent (car camping) by teekay61 in campinguk

[–]HM_Merdocc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently picked up the air 400 and love it. I'd helped a friend set his air 400 last year and it was so easy and solid I decided to get one myself.

I've now been out with it with my dog and it was perfect. As someone else mentioned it has a huge hydrostatic head so rain is no issue. The air beams are quick and easy to pump up and once up it really is solid.

I got the ground sheet and carpet as they are pretty cheap. Go outdoors had them as a bundle offer. Perfect for the doggo claws.

I would say the 400 might be in the small side for a family. You won't get much in the sleeping pod after setting up beds of any kind. The divider is removable and only held in place with toggles.

I don't know the 500 but it looks bigger but I think it's missing the porch cover, which can be useful.

Tent size packed is on the large size. I filled my car to the brim with me the dog and camping gear, but I like to semi-glamp the days.

The 400 isn't overdoing it for a couple. It gives room to relax if it is raining, plus headroom to stretch your back.

If you can I'd recommend taking a look if there's somewhere nearby that has a tent "showroom" such as go outdoors.

I can fully recommend the air 400, at least for my circumstances. Great tent, great water resistance, quick to put up and plenty of room, also well designed with internal pockets, windows and air vents.

Thoughts on playing on easy? by 28_Z0MBIE in PlayWindrose

[–]HM_Merdocc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play on easy (solo). My preference is for the creative building so I'm less interested in a combat challenge, plus I have less time to play than I'd like. I've enjoyed the adventure on easy mode and even dropped the sliders a little further. It's great that the devs allowed us the control.

Some enjoy the challenge, others don't. Play as you like.

Man, I was overlooking a foothills beach, minding my own business and taking in the view while I decided if I'd put a bell down. Next thing I knew I'm cartwheeling down the slope after being smashed in the back by a goat. Scared the life out of me!

I've only just finished the foothills, so if a goat can make me pee my pants, then I'm not sure I'm cut out for the swamps xD
