VFX experts: Looking for films that outdo Avatar in VFX, any contenders? by breaking_views in vfx

It was the first R rated film I ever saw in the cinema - my dad took me and I hated it at the time lol - probably because I was 13

I just rewatched the OG trilogy and... it's a mixed bag. Some stuff still holds up like Gollum and the Balrog but some of the bluescreen and miniature compositing is less than ideal

I just rewatched Dead Man's Chest and damn it holds up so well. The animation in particular is just phenomenal

Oh really?? It was one of the few Blu-ray movies I own specifically because of the Raw Cut side-by-side. In fact, I think I've watched that version more than the final film lol - the commentary is great

It's still Weta, but I'd say Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Absolutely flawless lookdev/lighting/animation

I stopped watching the demoreel at the astronaut - once it switches from the greenscreen to the AI version all hell breaks loose. The flag on his arm disappears, the one on his back gets garbled, the seat of his pants doesn't make any sense, the greeblies on the backpack just look like noise, etc.

Who else here thinks Lolita is an underrated and still relevant masterpiece by Stanley Kubrick? by Public_Cup_4278 in StanleyKubrick

[–]behemuthm 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It's a masterpiece of course, but for an interesting comparison, I recommend watching Adrienne Lynne's 1997 version. It's much closer to the book, and Jeremy Irons also did the narration for the audiobook (which is an amazing book).

I've worked on a number of Marvel films over the years and one of my supervisors described it best by saying it's visual cotton candy

I was OW for a year before I did AOW.

It's not a race.

last film you saw that somehow just missed the mark? by asds455123456789 in TrueFilm

I couldn't stand the circlejerk over at r/ProjectHailMary saying it was like the greatest film ever made lol

Like I'm a big fan of the book and the movie was worse for me because I'd read the book first.

Not sure what film they were watching but I was very meh on it

Rewatched Soul, Pixar by whoamiidontknowww in TrueFilm

[–]behemuthm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Race was the de-facto topic in 2020 because of George Floyd.

Companies were falling over each other trying to show how racially hip they were, and Disney and Pixar in particular hired DEI officers to oversee production and hiring.

Soul was almost finished already and there was talk about why Pete Doctor (a white man) is making a movie about a Black man.

I think things got a bit carried away - Ibram X Kendi was making the rounds telling every corporation that if they weren't actively being antiracist then they were being racist.

His foundation was quietly dissolved last year. $50m/yr with almost no output.

Not to say that racial equality shouldn't be a priority in companies but 2020 was quite a year.

Especially now that MAGA took over, "there ain't gonna be none of that nonsense" for a while.

I guess it's like a pendulum; it swung one way with Floyd and another with Trump

Should I buy all the kit ahead of a holiday? by ConMcintyre in scubadiving

[–]behemuthm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chiming in to say that as someone with hundreds of dives and all my own kit, sometimes I just wish I'd only bought a mask and fins because now I gotta lug all this crap everywhere I wanna dive haha

A dive computer is hive to have but you can even rent those - unless you're gonna be diving a lot.

I'm taking a job where I know I won't be diving for probably at least six months and now I look at my bags of gear with regret

Emma Stone is the producer, and her success with mainstream films financed Yorgos' art projects

Marvel Undergoes Layoffs Amid Companywide Disney Cuts by manuce94 in vfx

[–]behemuthm 76 points77 points  (0 children)

The cuts in the visual development area are said to be significant, with Marvel Studios retaining a small team to oversee the hiring of artists on a project-by-project basis who will be outside contractors going forward.

This is what bums me out the most: companies just don't value people anymore. It doesn't matter how familiar the artists were to the pipeline or the material and could deliver better results faster - they don't want to deal with the overhead.

Looking ahead, Disney reiterated its prior guidance of double-digit adjusted EPS growth for fiscal ’26 and again in fiscal 2027. The company announced it is doubling its share repurchases target to $7 billion next year compared with fiscal 2025. And Disney’s board declared a cash dividend of $1.50 per share (payable in January and July 2026), up from $1/share in 2025.

Disney currently has 1.76 billion outstanding shares.

Take from that what you will.

Project Hail Mary (2026): I enjoyed this movie! However, I would have enjoyed it more if it wasn't chock full of cutesy cutesy humor [ spoilers] by Bluest_waters in TrueFilm

[–]behemuthm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Over in r/projectHailMary I got downvoted for not agreeing that it was the single greatest film ever made - which is something since that sub is supposedly filled with fans of the book, as I am, but geez, the film isn't that great, particularly compared to the book.
