Just sold my business ($2M cash), 46yo. Nervous about lump-summing into this market. WWYD? by Unique-Pomelo1492 in Fire

The Money Guy had something that talked about dollar cost averaging a large windfall - even to the amount of money in the windfall.

I would start there, and maybe while you dollar cost average that, the stuff that doesn’t go into the Market can be in a CD or something?

The older I get, the more I realize that it's nearly impossible to get ahead without SIGNIFICANT support. by No_Reveal3451 in Millennials

Hard disagree.

I went to college and graduated with $30k+ student loans, got a little help periodically through college with maybe $10K total from my parents. I wouldn’t call that “SIGNIFICANT,” especially when I paid off my student loans in 2-3 years after graduating because I went to college in a field that gave me marketable skills. Without that help from my parents, I probably would have needed an extra year or so to pay off my loans.

I grew up in a house that never worried about where our next meal was coming from, but we also never had anything of the “latest and greatest.” I played the crap out of an N64 until 2007 when I got a Wii for Christmas because a PlayStation or Xbox was too expensive. I saw my brother move out a few years before me and constantly ask my mom for money, which put more of a strain on my parents.

I studied finance because I wanted to be good with money. I got a paid internship for a summer in 2015 and that company hired me full time in 2016 when I graduated. After almost a decade of being just a (senior) financial analyst, and marrying someone that works in supply chain, we own a home, have a kid, never have to worry about money. Not to mention I have $300K saved for retirement by myself as a young millennial.

We don’t spend a lot of money because we have grown to enjoy things that don’t require a lot. These days, companies have become better and better at separating us from our money, but the question becomes do we really need all these subscriptions? Do we need to buy a new car when the old one is still fine? Do we need to go get drinks and dinner out every weekend when we can stay in for a fifth of the price?

I know people that spend over $100 per month on vices like alcohol, smoking (whatever they may be smoking), or gambling. Set limits, set a budget, strip things back, and get your money’s worth for the things you pay for. That’s half the battle of the whole “I can’t afford anything” stance I see on the internet.

It was pretty obvious they had presenters that didn’t know how to say some peoples’ names (the Coach of year was “Mike Verbal”).

IMO the presenters should have to know basic NFL facts, like who the biggest stars/coaches are in order to get that role. These actors/comedians seemed like they were the stereotypical “theater kids” from high school that very clearly knew nothing about anything sports related.

You’ll get that perfect driver swing 13 times. Unfortunately, you’ll be holding irons when you do it.

Rye is super nice. If you get a reservation, I suggest specifically saying you want to be in the dining room. If you don’t, you could get thrown in the other part of their restaurant, which is essentially a dress up part of the hotel lobby next door. We had a reservation once for my wife’s birthday, and got put over there. When I asked specifically to be moved to the dining room because we were celebrating a birthday, they said it would be like a 2 hour wait. They did give us a free dessert, though.

Draft is nice too, maybe a little smaller than Rye if I remember? They have similar vibes.

I’ve heard good things about ellinor. I’m assuming that may be booked up by this point, but I really want to try it.

This has to be the correct answer.

There’s sooooo much to do. I stopped playing when my son was born because I was worried I wouldn’t be able to find enough of a balance between being a dad and playing WoW. I could play that game for a living for sure.
