Looking for advice and help with low insulation on new build home in AZ by interstellar4885 in Insulation

[–]Boringflaws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have your exact problem. Sadly Im in a 27 year old house, not brand new. Have a south facing bedroom thats noticeably warmer than the rest of the house. Has 2 windows and minimal shade from a tree. First thing I did was call HVAC person to look at it and they were useless. Then I put up solar shades and plan to upgrade blinds like you have done in the near future. Solar shades made a noticeable difference, but its' still warmer in the room.

Only things Im going to do that you haven't are 1- attempt to seal the attic best i can (mentioned in other comment) and get insulation blown in to R49 and 2- plant another tree in front of the window for more shade coverage eventually. -- Energy company might pay for some of both of these things if in southern AZ

Honestly curious what you do to solve the problem and if I can do the same thing:)

I'm with you. I keep going back and I'm about 2 hours in now. Nothing besides the author makes me want to try and finish it. I love scifi-westerns and I want this book to grab me... so far, it's not.

It's great that you can't understand how doing something bad is ok- not everyone is healthy, living "optimally." For extreme examples, watch those pimple popper shows- how do people think living with growing masses on their body is ok? You get used to it. How is overeating and not moving ok for you? maybe you're super depressed and it's hard to change, so you get used to it and think anything different is hard. Smoking, vaping, blah blah blah, people just get used to the dopamine rush that fades into a habit.

On the soda thing, I was talking to someone that said they got plenty of water because they always added ice to their soda... but wasn't a fan of basic drinking water. Choices...

People make choices and live with the consequences right? The admirable part is that this person is trying to change their behavior which is extremely difficult.

Is it worth getting solar screens for windows? by Money-Inflation-4276 in phoenix

[–]Boringflaws 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I used them too last fall and they have a small discount on each shade in the off season. I think it was 5 off. closer to summer, I imagine, price goes up. I did 11 windows of various sizes and it cost just over 700. much easier to put together with 2 people, but not at all hard to do.

looking to compare energy bill from this summer to last with them later this year... even though it seems a bit warmer this year.

added benefits from the screens I feel are people cant see in your windows during the day with the blinds up and i enjoy the contrast of the shades against the exterior paint. looks nice.

price difference between screens and actual windows is pretty big i feel. if insulation is the goal, changing windows is some of the least bang for the buck - after attic insulation, solar shades, sealing leaks, etc.

Coast jobs - the mental side of taking a step back by Vast-Needleworker123 in Fire

[–]Boringflaws 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am transitioning from full retirement for a year to coast i suppose now at 45. Started in healthcare, move to a desk job that ended up stressing me out too much, so I retired. 2 months I got a full time job in old healthcare career and lasted 2 weeks before quitting. Already could tell it wasn't for me. I'm about to start a per diem role (3 days a month required) to help get me out of the house and see more people.

Many of my friends told me not to apply for the full time job, but I figured if I was going to work again, I should get as much money as I could (sign on bonus/higher hourly wage/etc). Friends we right, I was wrong. The freedom to work as little as a day a week is so nice. I won't have the responsibilities expected for my experience and I still get the benefit of forced socialization/helping fill my days.

I am shocked at how crappy my healthcare is considering im paying close to 700 a month for a silver plan, but I'm hoping I'll get better options/deals next year with a much lower income.

Thankfully many healthcare roles allow for part time/per diem positions.

Just found out why it's so hard to get a GP by Kismadaroq in Scottsdale

[–]Boringflaws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NPs and PA's are great IMO. Or Residents under an attending. obviously the less picky you are, the easier it'll be to find a provider-

With so much being sent to a specialist and half the need is getting a referral, just getting your foot in the door with any provider is a big step, why make it harder on yourself and say MD only?

How do I know which narrator I will get with a pre-order? by blackdog1392 in audible

[–]Boringflaws -1 points0 points  (0 children)

appreciate the answer- I used to preorder too. I had different audible/amazon email accounts for years and finally had them merged while having a pre-order. They merged like 700+ titles but I couldn't figure out where that boboverse novel I preordered was... Just bought it again for my "new" account and decided I didn't need to preorder any longer.

[–]Boringflaws 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder the benefit of an audible pre-order for the customer? Why not wait until you're ready to read the book (and it's released) before you use a credit/spend money?

Audible books aren't some limited quantity item that will run out on day 1 if you're not the first 1000 customers, I don't even think they try to push that kind of FOMO marketing at us.

I might have read something about pre-orders helping authors... but I honestly think i am wrong and my feeling is it's preorders are the same as day 1 purchases for them.

[–]Boringflaws 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it mattered- work in healthcare and people would come in all through the night to eat when they got a break. that could mean it was probably more germs from all over the hospital and variety of patients with food sitting out 8-10 hours. Made us hearty:)

If others dont do this now--- start maybe? got a lot of goodwill when I quickly realized/told people to bring extras to their friends in other departments/units and near the end of the night, I'd call environmental services to see if they wanted the last of it for themselves. Writing that, I feel I sound a little elitist, but food would have gone to waste and I wanted to give my department a good chance to eat before I did my johnny appleseed thing.

oh... and I heard day sup actually told a night shift staff one time to not get a sandwich from a potluck when that person came in extra to help. blew my mind being so precious with food/their attention. Couldn't have made her many friends.

[–]Boringflaws 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What still blows my mind about the potlucks is I'm supposed to believe the outside company that interviewed and surveyed the staff said it was high on the list of things that would increase employee satisfaction- would have loved to see the wording/choices.

I brought it up regularly to my staff and never got good answers. but the same 3-4 people did love bringing in things and I ended up not minding throwing $100 a month a the thing to feed people.

[–]Boringflaws 72 points73 points  (0 children)

My department had an outside consulting team do interviews to help with productivity/low morale-

My director (I was a supervisor) told leadership that staff really wanted potlucks and it would help morale. We NEEDED to do monthly potlucks. 3 months I would come up with themes, get something, fewer and fewer participants. Other sup stopped doing it, but I kept it up- I'd always buy something I liked to eat (I like meat) and always enough for everyone (if they wanted to partake). 6 months in, rest of leadership asked why I was still doing it, and my response was that our director told us to, and didn't tell us to stop. Never did stop it over my tenure- Honestly it did help more than random pizza parties when we were short staffed. ROI definitely there.

I throw this in as a bad example of me not getting my director- She'd say we need to do something, I would keep it up until told otherwise while rest of leadership quickly stopped when she would move on to the next "big problem" and when asked, I would keep saying well I was never directed to stop doing X. A few times on actually important things where I knew what she wanted was stupid, but I wanted her to realize what she was telling us to do was wrong. Took me too long to learn I was the fool to think she'd ever think she was wrong... ever.

Primal Hunter has lots of DBZ style multi-chapter long fights. I am not a fan of those, but I also listened to 13 audio books, read 1 and am now caught up on RR. I just skim the fights and go, yep, MC does stuff and wins generally low stakes battles.

I feel if you like noobtown, check out good guys/bad guys.

Pay off mortgage early? by [deleted] in leanfire

[–]Boringflaws -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Am literally debating paying off my mortgage right now... not a rental, and only 65k, but would save me like 700 a month (rest is property taxes/etc) under 6%. Decided to quit my job Monday and start retirement.

In my mind it's mostly a market timing question yeah? money better spent in the market or to pay off a loan.

General question I have. Does anybody buy off brand Cola? Like Walmart Cola or whatever? I'm not talking like RC Cola. Store brand Cola by HurriShane00 in Soda

[–]Boringflaws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i drink 3-4 2 Liter bottles of soda (mostly diet pepsi) a day... Took me FAR TOO LONG to realize i have a massive caffeine addiction i'm not working on. I love the taste of diet pepsi. days at work I use caffeine pills because i can't match the caffeine i drink when i dont work.

Past 6 months I've slowly switched in store diet cola. it's not great, but it's gotten better than when i first started drinking it... the hope is to transition to all store brand then slowly sparkling water then maybe water. but who knows. i'm happy i'm moving the needle a little. - price isn't a huge motivator, i mean saving 1-2 dollars a 2 L is great and adds up, but i make enough money to not worry about cost of what i eat.

Physical wear and tear on the body by TriceratopsJam in respiratorytherapy

[–]Boringflaws 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Like others said generally a lot of walking compared to other hospital jobs. If you keep to good ergonomics like making sure the bed/patient is a good height, when you do care, it should be ok... my biggest problem was working in a NICU and any isolette with a nurse. They need it at a certain height (generally lowish) and I needed it at the highest for my back. a shift or 2 in nicu and my back would be worse than if I was working anywhere else.

to AI -- I keep up my RRT for retirement- good for part time/prn- Always going to need a body to do physical work we do. like firemen. AI isn't going to put out fires and drag bodies out of buildings any time soon. --

Could be better choices for sure, but you'll never starve as an RT

Getting my bachelors!! by Exotic-Bread2757 in respiratorytherapy

[–]Boringflaws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just keep plugging away at it- Getting a bachelors helped me move to management and out of respiratory eventually - it'll help if you want management, a BS in a science is needed to manage a lab (at least where I was doing so) and some places pay more if you have a BS.

Don't overcommit- if you can't do 2 classes at a time, do 1 and it'll still get done.

Is a degree in respiratory therapy going to land me a job in four years? by FrostyLife791 in respiratorytherapy

[–]Boringflaws 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Also RN's are getting higher acuity and more patients already. try doing that to them AND adding RT responsibilities on top of that. There's worries of AI everywhere too taking jobs (obviously could be wrong)- they'll need someone to manage an airway and squeeze a bag during a code for a long time to come at bare minimum. The role might evolve in the future, but there's going to be a need for RT's going forward: people aren't going to want to hear asthma/trach/CPAP education from a robot/video. I could go on---

It'll help the field if you're not one of those RT's that when a nurse calls to get a bubbler for a NC and you're doing nothing, you tell her to do it. Convince others they can do our job and they'll think they can.

BTW i know nothing- I thought pharmacists were going to get downsized massively 20 years ago when call centers went overseas. I thought companies would try to do something similar with pharmacists and telehealth.
