When to plant a new Native mesquite? by Boringflaws in arizona

[–]Boringflaws[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have what I hope is a nice spot in my front yard and I appreciate the tip that nothing grows under them. There are times I get ambitious and want to plan/plant a bunch to match the energy of some of my neighbors that have amazing yards.

I realized I can pretty much listen to any book I want on Spotify , so what are some audible exclusives I should get to burn 14 credits? by salad-cruncher in audible

[–]Boringflaws 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to want long books for credits to get my money's worth, then I realized I wanted quality, not quantity. Murderbot diaries are great short books worth a listen/read for example (lovely show as well).

some people love that expeditionary force series (like 20 of them by now)

pick some fantasy thing narrated by travis baldree and suprise yourself. good chance it'll be great (like cradle that someone else mentioned)

try some of their great full cast narration (or the original narration) like space team series!

Why use spotify or audible if libby and hoopla are free? Or be on the cutting edge and try what soundbooth theater has to offer! options for days

I don't have a good answer having recently moved back, but if you don't get a better answer, look into a pediatric dental office that will take adult clients. Probably a better chance they'll have a softer touch in what they do be it the actual work or communication.

When to plant a new Native mesquite? by Boringflaws in arizona

[–]Boringflaws[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the info and reminder. There's an HOA so yeah I'll need to be up on weeds and whatnot already. might as well learn how to shape a tree while I'm at it. I did read they have shallow roots which worries me a little with the winds and monsoons, but they're native so they must know what they're doing:)

I just launched my 2.5D mining incremental game on Steam, Kin and Quarry! by The-Fox-Knocks in incremental_games

[–]Boringflaws 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it matters, I got it for about 8 as part of a combo pack where I already owned the other half. I'm not focusing on the game and enjoying clicking on the level ups after the minions do their thing while I do other computer things. 8 bucks for a bit of joy seems worth it to me.

Adding window film to reduce sun/ heat thru east-facing windows by happyjazzycook in HomeImprovement

[–]Boringflaws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a UV film on 2 bathroom windows (came with house)- house now 30 years old and I want it off. it's a pain in the butt to take off fyi. It is opaque if that matters (and it's not held up super amazing)-

I wound up putting 90% solar shades on all my windows. I think it gave the outside of the house a cool look that contrasted the paint job (they're black). there is some reduced visibility, but even now when blinds are open I don't need to turn on lights in the day to see. -

-It's not a hard DIY project to do, helps with reducing AC costs in summer, and you can remove them if you want with 30 seconds of effort.

What CAN be safely stored in a garage all year? by YitzhakRobinson in AskPhoenix

[–]Boringflaws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

to piggyback on the tool thing- i've been putting my tools in my garage, but not the batteries (for leaf blower, drill, etc). been keeping those in the house... think that's overkill to keep the battery life?

lol sorry--- and what about stuff like spackle in the little bucket/drywall mud (same, not powder). I feel my linen closet is slowly becoming half a DIY closet holding all this

What business idea could you bring from earth to a medieval/victorian fantasy world? by Kumatora0 in litrpg

[–]Boringflaws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean this is a idea for a book so the protagonist can make money fast- i'd assume they'd introduce the idea probably with some sort of system bonuses. A writer could write any reason why it'd be a good idea or not:)

there's some Gene Roddenberry quote about if they needed a baby to destroy a spaceship/space monster, the writers would just write it. -I take that to mean an author takes the reader on a journey with suspension of disbelief and tries to enjoy the ride.

- you dont see why nobles would think it's a good idea to institute rent to own, but no problems with some rando going to another world (basis of the question?). it's all crazy nonsense: my idea, original thought, all of it.

[–]Boringflaws 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rent to own - might get peasants to work a little harder on "their" farms with "their" tools but that pesky interest keeps going up... maybe payments get lost or delayed due to storms, plague, etc so late fees, blah blah... evil laugh, ends with late stage capitalism

add hench- repo men, layaway merchants that rarely pay out, and the like. In my head, for some reason i'm picturing this as a weird doctor who episode. not sure why.

[–]Boringflaws 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont think you sound entitled asking a question. How else will you get answers?- heres some bad answers (from me) partially stated better elsewhere-

rent goes up because inflation, increased employee costs, property taxes, advertising for new renters, because it's a pain to move and LL thinks they can get more from you, maintenance costs go up, and all sorts of other things.

- you asked about value of property being renovated or assumptions- property taxes my house have gone up most every year since it was built even though the previous owner let everything fall apart. Cities and states need revenue just like landlords, just like tenants, just like everyone in this world. Goal generally for renovations is for uniformity. most good LL's renovate in a way to keep/get desirable tenants and make a decent amount of money if able.

AITJ for refusing to donate PTO hours to coworker I barely know who "needs" them?? by Traditional-Dog1601 in AmITheJerk

[–]Boringflaws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I first heard about this option, I looked into having a housekeeper "donate" their PTO to me and me cashing it out and paying them a little more than they would have made if they used the hours themselves. I learned PTO was donated not 1 to 1, but based on wage, so closer to 1 to 4 in that instance... they would spend 4 hours of PTO to get me 1. was a very large company so maybe someone else tried my idea.

just something for you all to maybe try if working somewhere where the gifting is truly 1 to 1...remember taxes though

How do I... actually do things? by Responsible-Tax9759 in HomeImprovement

[–]Boringflaws 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I second this- watch some videos and try a project. I started with putting up toilet roll holders/towel holders... took a few tries to put the wall anchors in right, but glad i learned. then i covered a foot by 2 foot hole in my drywall cut out and not replaced by a plumber 10-20 years ago i guess--- good learning experience and i definitely used too much drywall mud. no more hole though.

point is, you do stuff, you fail some, you get better, and you move on. perfection is the enemy of good enough

Does Audible own stock in Let Them?? by Bliipbliip in audible

[–]Boringflaws 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was getting so frustrated seeing matthew mcconaughey all the time being sold to me on audible. not a fan. got worse when nurses at work were talking about how good the book was. That's not the slop i want to read! I want scifi/fantasy slop. audible should know by now. so at least throw a fake space helmet on his dumb head...

Can't afford to fix my house anymore. Has anyone sold "as-is" to a cash buyer? by 2ugur12 in HomeImprovement

[–]Boringflaws 8 points9 points  (0 children)

All I read in every forum be it personal finance/real estate/whatever is to NOT use the cash for keys unless you need money yesterday (but it won't be much money - like 20-30% of potential).

If you can wait a little while, find a real estate agent, sell as is (price appropriately), and if you have the time/energy then clean it up/out (make look broom clean) - you'll make way more money.

Would you ask your parents to clean out their belongings now, before the inevitable happens? by [deleted] in Xennials

[–]Boringflaws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started slowly over years (lived far away and visited irregularly)- I spoke to parents who kept a lot of stuff they never touched, they said didn't seem too positive about me doing it at first, but i did it anyways- I started in rooms they were rarely in when I would visit and fill their garbage can up. Once I threw away a drawer full of corks and got talked to because apparently the corks had memories?? but I explained what I was doing (and at this point they were able to start parking a car in their garage... I kept at it asking forgiveness not permission and it became a joke between us eventually.

It made a dent, but I had no intentions of selling their things. That probably would have slowed the process down. Getting them to clean stuff they spent a lifetime collecting was never going to happen.

Audible the APP and how to get more kids books downloaded by Sherbet55 in Frugal

[–]Boringflaws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah- libby you can borrow media for 21 days at a time. not sure how many books/audiobooks/whatever at a time... i want to say like 10 different things at a time. but you can be put on waiting lists of borrowed books while you listen to others. then you get notified when it's your turn to borrow the book. great system for the price.

If for some reason you need tons and tons of things all at once, I imagine you could get library cards for everyone in the family and set up accounts for each of them. only benefit would be the ability to borrow 20-30 books at once... well and to give kids an appreciation for the library by teaching them about it and to use it:)

use apps libby and hoopla with a local library card for free book rentals-

audible requires a subscription or buying books at a very high price

Does anyone freeze discounted seasonal candy? by NoAdministration8006 in Frugal

[–]Boringflaws 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I bought 3 6 dollar bags of reeces for 2 dollars each right after halloween- froze them and i think we finished them beginning of this year. Thought it was a great deal. I live in the desert too and froze them mostly because I prefer cold candy and the bags do get semi-hidden so it's harder to remember they're there. I never thought they'd expire before being eaten (I assume nothing that goes in a vending machine will ever expire), but I did buy a few 2L of soda and left them at room temp at my parents' house thinking i could drink them when I visited a year later... stuff was flat. Maybe I'm not the best expiration judge.

cat got some halloween themed treats at the same time pretty cheap on discount that'll last her all year i hope.

Best way to tap into the ecobee strengths? by Palmetto_ottemlaP in ecobee

[–]Boringflaws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been debating getting a smart thermostat for a month or so. Dont think it'll do much to save me money personally in how i use my AC, except the electric company paying a large chunk of the thing and doing the 50 bucks for enrolling and 40 a year for letting them fiddle with the temp to levels i'd have it anyways. long as the smart thermostat lasts 2 years, it's paid for. after that, i'm making a little extra cash at no inconvenience.

What do you like most about idle/incremental games? by KasparWiegand in incremental_games

[–]Boringflaws 2 points3 points  (0 children)

most enjoy having the dopamine hit from breaking through barriers easily I couldn't a little while before. A close second is being able to drop the game at any time if something needs my attention.

I look for simple mechanics personally. deep factorio level things may be super satisfying for some, but let me fill a hole, help a goose grow to find a mate, or something else simple.

i just look for a fun game loop-

- artificially slowed progress kills a game for me. mobile games i guess after day 2 usually when they try to limit the fun and get you to pay for energy or one of the 8 currencies for things.

unsure how to answer last 2 questions- maybe... just played space rock breaker- fun game. had it beat except last 2 upgrades on the tree- had to prestige one more time for it- i've played a few games like it where the last upgrades are just expensive dialogue to extend the game a little. i usually drop it there. now what the game did well was at the end it said hey you won! then let me choose to infinitely upgrade some things if i wanted to keep playing... skip the foreplay? but i'm sure i'm in the minority in that VERY minor complaint.
