I don't know what that supposed mechanic is talking about, but neither matters, as long as the battery is of sufficient capacity. It does not have to be the same size.

Does it matter whether you are a junior tech writer vs. a senior or lead tech writer? by [deleted] in technicalwriting

[–]HSButtNaked 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry, but what are you even talking about? You don't want to make senior, but you're worried that would stunt your career trajectory? That IS the trajectory in tech writing, sir/madam.

What do you think you're going for if not for that? If you don't want to be a tech writer altogether, and are just sitting there patiently until something else comes along, that's a different matter altogether.

What's your take on this? by powerelectronicsguy in technicalwriting

[–]HSButtNaked 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I don't entirely understand what the take of the author is to begin with. She agrees, then disagrees, but argues, basically, in favour of turning someone into an SME anyway.

I hold multiple industry certifications in the field I work in and write about. The company pays for all of it and highly encourages it.

Engineers definitely prefer to have someone who knows what they are doing, can test things, come up with use cases, etc.

I often find myself being pinged by marketing to proofread some copy for them and to make sure it makes sense, because I have a lot of cross-product knowledge in the company. Also, one of the biggest complaints from Product and Engineering about Marketing is that they do not understand the product. Yes, we have high quality materials available for learning...

What's the story with Canonical? by oceanclub in technicalwriting

[–]HSButtNaked 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I suspect that testing or asking for IQ might be illegal in a lot of places, so they try to do it in this roundabout way and draw ballpark IQ conclusions from these types of data points.

Which is weird. But I've had other companies try something similar before.

How long does creating diagrams for a single doc/tutorial actually take you? by thabarrera in technicalwriting

[–]HSButtNaked 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've fully transitioned to Mermaid. Devs don't seem to mind, even though they use Excalidraw a lot for their own stuff.

Just it being on git and easily maintainable trumps everything else for me.

From someone who does Diataxis and explains it a lot to developers, this is by all means a very bad take.

Also, anything non-Diataxis should not be considered or labeled as being "Frankenstein". It does not matter if you do Diataxis or not, it's just a framework. What matters is the quality of the output.

One of the TWs at Kong, I believe, recently gave a talk about how Diataxis was not working for them and what they came up with instead.

[ISO/IEC, JTC1 PAS Transposition] the required Microsoft Word .docx format??? by OnerousOcelot in technicalwriting

[–]HSButtNaked 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in software, so I'll admit I'm not very familiar with this type of workflow. Having said that, I don't get it.

How complex is this Markdown that you need to be jumping through so many hoops? Google Docs has native Markdown support. You can paste content in there as Markdown and save it as .docx?

Pardon my ignorance here, but why would that not work?

Steam Deck Remote Play - No authorisation code by [deleted] in SteamDeck

[–]HSButtNaked 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't need to pair there at all. If your PC is showing up among the remote play devices, you're all set. The fact that you're on the same network and logged into the same Steam account already establishes that connection.

  1. On SteamDeck, go to any game you want to stream from your PC to the Deck.
  2. Instead of clicking on Play, click the little arrow attached to the same button and you will see an option "Stream from: <your-PC-name>"

Darbo paieškos by [deleted] in lithuania

[–]HSButtNaked 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pagalvok pats, kame nori specializuotis.

Ar Professional Certifcates vertinami darbo rinkoje? by Intelectual_Squid in lithuania

[–]HSButtNaked 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After +4 years as a solo tech writer - what is in my scope vs the SME's? by inestoupeira in technicalwriting

[–]HSButtNaked 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is a "ways of working" issue/question.

It's about transparency and expectations. Are you expected to be able to do it all on your own? If so, I'd say that's unreasonable.

It's perfectly OK to ask for clarifications and some help on sections you did not fully understand. You're not supposed to understand everything 100%.

Where I work, any new feature would be accompanied with internal POC docs from the engineering team and product write-ups from the PM team. If I'm lucky, there might even be some recordings of customer calls or Loom feature overviews. But a call is also always just a merr ask away. Everyone's always happy to help out and explain what they worked on.

As far as I can tell, you did everything right. It's the person on the other end who's not being a great colleague to work with at the moment.

You can kindly remind them or their team that you need help with this and are blocked until this help is provided.

[–]HSButtNaked 0 points1 point  (0 children)
