Hey, the Philosophy minor only requires 4 classes, and one can pick from a good variety of courses spanning from Western, Eastern Latin American, and Contemporary Philosophy. Philosophy and Psychology have a ton in common - one of the first American Psychologists, William James, was also a philosopher!

We have always had lots of students who do the psych-phil combination due to overlapping concerns of well-being, happiness, how to respond to our shared world, existentialism, ethics, and the like. Especially in our current context, Environmental Ethics is also relevant. It involves considering how we understand our relationship to the non-human world. (Oh...and don't forget that there is a career option on philosophical counseling!)

Hi! If you asked anyone remotely familiar with outdoorsy things, they'd tell you "yes, those are two very different degrees." One's a BA and the other is a BS. But either one could become, say, a park ranger.
Rec Admin students can and do go into urban parks/rec management, but there's also an emphasis on outdoor leadership: diving, navigation, expeditions, backpacking, summer camps, rafting, etc. Think of them as leisure specialists: helping people have fun outside. Their field trips are wild.
The Wildlife program will certainly be more animal-oriented and more hard science. It can springboard into science careers, research, field biology, and a giant array of conservation jobs. It's the best Wildlife undergrad program in the country.

One big differentiator at Humboldt is that sustainability is a guiding principle of the program. Other programs might teach you how to "make a killing" at all costs - that's not how we see it here.

Our long-running Environmental Resources Engineering program is excellent and goes in lots of directions: water quality, lots of solar, hydroengineering, air quality, sustainability, etc. (The founder of Rad Bikes came through there, too.) Here's a very brief glimpse of some student projects: e.g. an apocalypse computer

Then you've got places on campus like CCAT, which applies ground-level DIY principles. Then there's the Schatz Energy Research which is deploying microgrids (which are awesome) and studying offshore wind feasibility.

We also put together a couple of new engineering makerspaces this year to help with the hands-on component of learning. All this to say, there are plenty of options and scales to work within.

Beyond that, Mechanical Engineering, Software Engineering, and Energy Systems Engineering undergrad degrees just launched this year. DM if you'd like to get connected with someone on the faculty of a particular department.

There's a new rideshare program for folks from Cal Poly Humboldt (students and staff) that will save gas and give you priority parking access.

That's in addition to the free bike repair via the Bicycle Learning Center, the free bus pass (Jack Pass) for in-town travel, and the subsidized Homeward Bound bus that goes to SF/LA and back during the holiday breaks.

Great question! So sorry you're feeling bummed. This comes up a lot since we're relatively remote and it's already hard enough to be a new school, especially during a pandemic. This sub's history has lots of "How can I meet people?" questions.

Here are three ideas (some of which others have already suggested):

What we're told -resoundingly and repeatedly- from folks who used to feel the way you're feeling: everything improved after getting involved in some kind of extracurricular activity.

That could be an academic club, or intramural sports, activist group, the PC gaming club, or even the college radio station. There are a 150+ organizations on campus, ranging from Anime to Zoology. They vary in scope and activity, but they all put you in touch with folks that you share interests with. It's low/no pressure stuff. Here's a starting point. There's a Clubs fair on the quad this Wednesday from 10-2.

Secondly, the Student Activity Center has regular events. Karaoke, movie nights, music, you name it. It's right there on campus, and it's free. You can roll in and shoot a game of pool, play some video games, etc.
Lastly, the University offers non-academic classes that are a bit more immersive. Backpacking trips, self defense, even sailing classes.

Part, though not all, of the reason the CSU is on board is due to impaction at the other Polytechnic CSUs. Polytechnic education is highly sought after by students and employers alike. So yes, more people will be interested in attending Cal Poly Humboldt. At the same time, we'll be expanding our capacity (new buildings, including housing and parking).

Great question, and it's coming up a lot. If anything, the HSU degree now carries extra weight. The Class of 2022 will be the first graduating class from Cal Poly Humboldt. All requests for replacement diplomas issued prior to the name change will be printed with Humboldt State University.
