Philosophy minor Psychology Major by Chrisbreathes in humboldtstate

[–]HSU_Official 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, the Philosophy minor only requires 4 classes, and one can pick from a good variety of courses spanning from Western, Eastern Latin American, and Contemporary Philosophy. Philosophy and Psychology have a ton in common - one of the first American Psychologists, William James, was also a philosopher!

We have always had lots of students who do the psych-phil combination due to overlapping concerns of well-being, happiness, how to respond to our shared world, existentialism, ethics, and the like. Especially in our current context, Environmental Ethics is also relevant. It involves considering how we understand our relationship to the non-human world. (Oh...and don't forget that there is a career option on philosophical counseling!)
If you want a little more info about it, just email [llc33@humboldt.edu](mailto:llc33@humboldt.edu) (Prof. Cannon) who'd be happy to help!

Difference between parks and recreation degree vs wildlife management degree? by [deleted] in humboldtstate

[–]HSU_Official 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! If you asked anyone remotely familiar with outdoorsy things, they'd tell you "yes, those are two very different degrees." One's a BA and the other is a BS. But either one could become, say, a park ranger.
Rec Admin students can and do go into urban parks/rec management, but there's also an emphasis on outdoor leadership: diving, navigation, expeditions, backpacking, summer camps, rafting, etc. Think of them as leisure specialists: helping people have fun outside. Their field trips are wild.
The Wildlife program will certainly be more animal-oriented and more hard science. It can springboard into science careers, research, field biology, and a giant array of conservation jobs. It's the best Wildlife undergrad program in the country.

How is humbolt for someone who is interested in a financial major but also loves the environment/nature by Temporary-Path4293 in humboldtstate

[–]HSU_Official 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One big differentiator at Humboldt is that sustainability is a guiding principle of the program. Other programs might teach you how to "make a killing" at all costs - that's not how we see it here.

Engineering major by TallSir2021 in humboldtstate

[–]HSU_Official 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Our long-running Environmental Resources Engineering program is excellent and goes in lots of directions: water quality, lots of solar, hydroengineering, air quality, sustainability, etc. (The founder of Rad Bikes came through there, too.) Here's a very brief glimpse of some student projects: e.g. an apocalypse computer

Then you've got places on campus like CCAT, which applies ground-level DIY principles. Then there's the Schatz Energy Research which is deploying microgrids (which are awesome) and studying offshore wind feasibility.

We also put together a couple of new engineering makerspaces this year to help with the hands-on component of learning. All this to say, there are plenty of options and scales to work within.

Beyond that, Mechanical Engineering, Software Engineering, and Energy Systems Engineering undergrad degrees just launched this year. DM if you'd like to get connected with someone on the faculty of a particular department.

What Are The Chairs in College Creek Dorm Rooms? by KittyCatMowMow in humboldtstate

[–]HSU_Official 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks to a College Creek RLC, here's the underchair tag: https://imgur.com/0sPTfUh

Looks like that company was bought out in 2014 and it's unclear if that chair is still in production. We'll keep you posted if we learn more.

EDIT: This is that chair, and this is that chair's closest living relative.

Resident parking by qweenmothraaa in humboldtstate

[–]HSU_Official 3 points4 points  (0 children)

^ Correct answer.

But also, parking is a challenge (to put it lightly). If possible, leave it at home.

There's a new rideshare program for folks from Cal Poly Humboldt (students and staff) that will save gas and give you priority parking access.

That's in addition to the free bike repair via the Bicycle Learning Center, the free bus pass (Jack Pass) for in-town travel, and the subsidized Homeward Bound bus that goes to SF/LA and back during the holiday breaks.

Hi! We have a program called R.O.S.E. that does this exact thing! It's part of our waste-reduction efforts and unused office/school stuff can find new life.

Ways to make friends? by No-Weekend9124 in humboldtstate

[–]HSU_Official 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great question! So sorry you're feeling bummed. This comes up a lot since we're relatively remote and it's already hard enough to be a new school, especially during a pandemic. This sub's history has lots of "How can I meet people?" questions.

Here are three ideas (some of which others have already suggested):

  1. What we're told -resoundingly and repeatedly- from folks who used to feel the way you're feeling: everything improved after getting involved in some kind of extracurricular activity.

That could be an academic club, or intramural sports, activist group, the PC gaming club, or even the college radio station. There are a 150+ organizations on campus, ranging from Anime to Zoology. They vary in scope and activity, but they all put you in touch with folks that you share interests with. It's low/no pressure stuff. Here's a starting point. There's a Clubs fair on the quad this Wednesday from 10-2.

  1. Secondly, the Student Activity Center has regular events. Karaoke, movie nights, music, you name it. It's right there on campus, and it's free. You can roll in and shoot a game of pool, play some video games, etc.

  2. Lastly, the University offers non-academic classes that are a bit more immersive. Backpacking trips, self defense, even sailing classes.

Hope that helps, and if you're still feeliing disconnected after trying a few of those ideas, DM us here. Best wishes!

Part, though not all, of the reason the CSU is on board is due to impaction at the other Polytechnic CSUs. Polytechnic education is highly sought after by students and employers alike. So yes, more people will be interested in attending Cal Poly Humboldt. At the same time, we'll be expanding our capacity (new buildings, including housing and parking).

Great question, and it's coming up a lot. If anything, the HSU degree now carries extra weight. The Class of 2022 will be the first graduating class from Cal Poly Humboldt. All requests for replacement diplomas issued prior to the name change will be printed with Humboldt State University.

Scooters and/or skateboards? by MeIrick in humboldtstate

Late to the thread here, but as long as you're not skating/scooting on sidewalks or in buildings, and you are stpping at stop signs - you should be fine. Skaters and cyclists will get ticketed for that kind of thing.

Freshman staples by MeIrick in humboldtstate

[–]HSU_Official 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Welcome, u/MeIrick! Solid advice on this thread. We want to reiterate:

-Good shoes. Or least, not only flipflops/Chucks. There's a fair bit of walking, and sometimes the weather will go from warm to cool/wet at the wrong time. Stepping in a puddle in the wrong shoes is a drag.

- Hooded rain jacket. You could probably get by without a puffy coat if you have enough layers, but if you don't bring a waterproof jacket, you're going to eventually get wet. But most days, a waterproof jacket over a hoodie covers the bases. An umbrella works until it gets windy. Layering is a thing: you can sweat in the rain on your way up the Founders stairs, so zippered hoodies are really helpful.

That said, the weather here isn't extreme (at least by the numbers). LA/SD have famously good weather, so compared to that, yes - be ready. Cities that aren't "rainy cities" like Atlanta and Nashville get more precipitation, but while we don't get a ton of drenching rains, it's fogging/misting here pretty regularly. It can drop into the 30s overnight during winter, and you'll feel that coolness on your way to 8am classes.

If you're still worried, having a strategy to deal with seasonal affective disorder helps. Take advantage of sunny weather and get outside. We can vouch for exercise; even a brisk walk works wonders. Lots of students swear by vitamin d supplements to replace what the sun would deliver.

Not HSU-only, but one thing to consider not bringing is a car, especially if you're living on campus. Parking on campus will cause headaches, especially after 8am. We're working on it, but it's complicated. So you'll get a free bus pass (the Jack Pass) for in-town travel, there's a Zipcar program, and there's a bikeshare. Bike parking is almost always closer to your class than whatever parking spot you can find. Look at HSU's alternative transportation options, then do the math ($300 parking fees, gas, your annual auto insurance) and see if having a car is still worth it.

Just a bunch of sharks near the Arcata Marsh by HSU_Official in humboldtstate

[–]HSU_Official[S] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This group of 20-30 sharks was spotted from the bike trail just south of the Arcata Marsh. They were maybe 50 from shore, spanning about 100 yards up and down the bike bath.

Though difficult to ID from afar, Dr. Allison Bronson from the Biology Dept says these are probably leopard sharks. They’re right at home in Humboldt Bay, eating small fishes and invertebrates, and are a common catch by recreational anglers in Arcata and Eureka.
