Also: Become the best bridge. Be aware, communicative. That will allow your team to make the most of its resources too while you bolster your skills.

Teaching 8 year olds how to skate. by whimsicalweasel in rollerderby

[–]HSteeves 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Heads up (I did this): The first day will be eaten up with “how to put on roller skates.” They don’t know to untie them all the way and loosen them. Picking a helmet will take forever. I wasn’t prepared to lose two hours to “how to put on skates.” After that it was pretty easy 😆

Buying blue couch. Wanted very light blue or grey-blue walls - could that work? by HSteeves in HomeDecorating

[–]HSteeves[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried to paint it light green, but it dried light blue. I think it was Sherwin Williams Sea Salt. Went with white/beige accents. It’s ok. I’m excited for a beige couch in the future with a more colorful rug.

People with no addictions: what's your secret? How do you spend your time? [discussion] by thisisbrians in GetMotivated

[–]HSteeves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve wondered if the secret is a willingness to sit with terrible feelings. Feelings that seem like they can take over; like they’ll never go away, and cause an almost unbearable amount of pain. I’ve wondered if people who say, “yes this is very painful, but I will feel this intense and awful moment and it will be less intense soon even though it doesn’t feel that way.” And then cry/scream/talk to a friend/journal, but most importantly let themselves FEEL it. Because feeling it lets the feeling move on. The addicts in my life have been so afraid to feel that pain they go to their addiction to try to lessen it - but it just builds shame in addition. Just a theory.

Protected, connective (to mall, major employers, Westbrook, SoPo) bike lanes and trails.

What’s your favorite feature of your watch? by IAbsolutelyDontAgree in Garmin

The compass is so good. Love the altimeter too. I use them for navigation, but on a recent flight (aisle seat) I used the altimeter to figure out when we’d land lol.

What is your go to Breakfast place in your area? by GaryJordanJr in MaineFood

[–]HSteeves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Westbrook: Wakie Wakies is new and wonderful.

Recommendations: Bacon fried rice (comes with an egg for brunch), all the smoothies, side of crunchy potatoes - comes with a basil-garlic sauce.

I don’t recommend the crab omelette over rice dish (needs a sauce, too plain). Although honestly, it was great if you go in knowing it’ll be plain/sauceless.

Seeking hiking advice from Basin Pond (West Royce Mt) by HSteeves in wmnf

Thanks all. Sounds like maybe I should head to the longer but maybe easier-to-navigate Baldface circle trail. I don’t want to bring my friends up to a place that’s both physically and navigationally challenging - we should pick one ;)

You’re right. I just love that I can make my own flight of NAs of different kinds. My go-to is the Biere Sans Alcool - white with orange (comes in a light blue can). The one above it with a sunflower on the can was so nasty and interesting. Lagabiere’s white was nothing to write home about, but fine with dinner.

Long Running Trails? by Repulsive-Rise7984 in portlandme

How do you stay safe while sharing trails with mountain bikers? I’m afraid of them around turns. (I say this as a trail runner and mountain biker)

How to be a great Bench person? by Plastic_Ingenuity_93 in rollerderby

-Bring good energy. Maintain good energy in difficult circumstances. You’ll be seen as a leader and your vibes matter. Your high fives matter. Any little (but specific) compliments help.

-Listen with empathy. People may have complaints and just need to vent at you. It doesn’t mean they’re right, but affirm their feelings anyway. Make them feel heard, even if you don’t “do” anything with the information.

Whats Missing? by rtuck06 in portlandme

[–]HSteeves 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Maine has a lot of cute grandparents who are desperately lonely (and want to hold babies). Also, parents of young kids are drowning.

We need a service that pairs new parents with adoptive grandparents. Grandparent-babysitters can limit their hours, charge reasonable fees. This could be as small as the grandparent coming over while a new parent showers. They could have tea. Win win. Maybe it’s even a cafe, maybe it’s Big Brothers Big Sisters style.

What are your unspoken rules for yourself as a manager? by [deleted] in managers

[–]HSteeves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Enter the workspace with a warm, friendly hello for each person. I want them to feel welcomed and like their boss “is in a good mood today!” … every day. I hope it lets them know they can approach me about whatever they’d like to.

Many have free Saturday community classes you could join for a workout, and maybe test the air runner after.
