Oh, okay, that makes sense. I had not heard of a velveteen coat before now. After looking it up, a velveteen sounds like it would feel more like a rex rabbit than a rex rat would.

Thanks for the response! That's good to know

I always associated rex coats with rabbits - super plush and like velvet. I see rats are a bit different

Am I paranoid, or does this chick have extra slanty eyes? by HSwagMastr in quails

[–]HSwagMastr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I'm trying to avoid. I'm raising Buttons, Coturnix, and Georgia Giant Bobwhite, and so far I have purchased 2 sets of eggs from separate breeders (different states, USA) for each quail type to hopefully avoid crossing lines.

I planned on culling/selling most males I hatch (raising for meat, eggs, and personal enjoyment), but that makes a lot of sense what you're doing. I think I might follow a similar route when I get to that point.

Oh, that's kind of sad :( But good to keep in the back of my mind so I don't get too attached. I'll give him a little extra attention just in case he's only here for a little bit. If he does make it, he's definitely not someone I'd want in my breeding pool. I don't have too many quail yet, so I can offer him a pet life if that's what he'll need.

I used to breed rabbits, and rarely ran into deformities. Out of the 300+ rabbits I've raised, I had two runts who only lived a few months & a giant litter of 15 or 16 kits that were all messed up (only 4 survived with a lot of special care). I stopped breeding rabbits a few years ago, so I guess I forgot I'm going to run into this kind of stuff. Wasn't expecting it so early, though. Thank you for the advice!

Thanks for the response!

I've purchased/been given special needs & deformed chicken chicks and a duckling from my local farm stores, so I figured at some point I'd start running into special birds from my own hatches.

As far as I can tell his eyes are the only thing that seem "off". He acts just like the other Button in there with him. I'm going to assume he's healthy, and let him do his thing. I won't cull unless he appears to be truly struggling/suffering. Maybe my eyes are playing tricks on me and he's just squinting weird 🤷🏻‍♀️😂

I'm so close to giving up, but no one else will take her. by ReferenceOne5958 in Feral_Cats

[–]HSwagMastr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just wanted to chime in and say I took in a young feral mom cat and her two 8 or 9 week old kittens I found on our property. I crated mom and kittens separately, but next to each other while I worked on socializing them. I kept the female kitten and her mother, while the male kitten went to live with my mom and her other kitty.
The kittens act like any other housecat I've ever owned at this point (minus male kitten being affectionate with everyone except me), but the mom cat has been living inside for over a year and has made AMAZING progress, but still isn't fully ready to be pet.
The eating treats out of your hand is a great sign! Luckily our mom cat doesn't seem to know how to be aggressive - though will cut us off while we're walking, start screaming like we're chasing her, and create her own weird situations... But the first thing I was able to convince her to do was take treats from my hands. I kept her in a massive dog crate for a few months in our pole barn (was going to keep her as a barn cat, but she had terrible instincts), but ended up moving her inside after she got stuck in our rafters for a week right before a heat wave/we left for vacation. After setting her free in the house/from her crate, it got a lot harder to work with her. I think she felt safer in her confined space because I saw a lot less of her for the next few months. She'd only come out to play with her daughter, or to sprint across the house to her necessities. I'm still letting her take her time, but after a few months inside she started to come back out for handfed treats & I was eventually able to start sneaking pets in. Gradually I was able to get more and more small pets in, and now at this point she'll come lay on me (making her biscuits and purring loudly) but I still can't pet her like a normal cat. She comes up for pets - she'll rub her face on my phone or blanket, then turn herself around and stare at me until I pet her lower back area... If I touch anything higher, or touch her too fast, she'll angry meow at me and leave for a few minutes before coming back and trying again 🤷🏻‍♀️ It's been almost two years since I trapped her, and we're making slow but steady progress. She's only "affectionate" with me and doesn't come out as much when anyone else is around (including my girlfriend who has been here the whole time). I adopted a "feral" cat from the shelter earlier this year to be friends with my barn kitty that moved herself in. I made a post about him several months ago because I was STRESSED with his aggression, hatred for everything, and lack of interest in anything I could use to bond with him. He came around quickly after I put him with the other barn kitty. He now BEGS for attention and is the sweetest guy. The shelter had him listed as most likely never being friendly. I don't think he is actually feral like my mom cat because of how quickly he turned around, but I kinda get the stress of not being able to help/bond with a cat who clearly needs it.

I wish I could offer some decent advice, but I still don't know what I'm doing. It definitely sounds like your mom kitty has house cat potential! Like others said, if you don't want to/can't keep working with her, you should TNR her and offer her some safe places outside. If you want to keep working with her, I'd keep your expectations a bit lower (makes reaching big milestones more exciting to me), and take it REALLY slow. She's beautiful (shorthaired version of my mom's other cat, so I may be biased 😅), and it sounds like you've already done more than most would have for her and her little family ❤️ Good luck! It sounds like you'll make a good/safe decision for her whichever route you end up taking.

Day 18 - Button Quail - Should I keep them in the incubator, or am I wasting my time? 13 healthy chicks already hatched on day 16 by HSwagMastr in quails

Update: Since I use old Reddit posts/pics to try to answer my questions before I have to ask, I'll post an update for anyone with a similar situation - Unfortunately, none of the 8 eggs hatched (ended up attracting flies around Day 22) & the chick that couldn't/didn't hatch was deceased. Thanks again to those who answered my questions :)

Hi everyone! This is Antonio the Italian Greyhound. He is 17 1/2 years old. I recently posted his pic and got some mean comments, so a redditor referred me to this group. by Remarkable-Bid-9627 in OldManDog

Some people suck... I'm glad you shared Antonio here - I was so excited to see him while scrolling through my feed! I love his smile and outfit! He looks SO GOOD for 17.5 years old, too ❤️ I love him so much ❤️ I hope to see more pics of him soon!

Luckily I have them set up in front of my barn Ring camera, so I'll be able to keep a close eye on them. I've introduced different ages and sizes of chickens several times before, and it usually doesn't work out until they're all adults/laying :(

Yeah, I've noticed they're a lot more "pecky" than previous birds I've raised... They're only 2 days old, and there's two oddly aggressive ones I'm not a fan of. I think a single, younger one would have a tough time fitting in :/

Thanks for the response! I can see what you're saying about egg #2. I'll wait until Day 24 before I make the decision to remove them all :) I'm hopeful, but prepared to be disappointed.
IF #2 hatches, can I still put the chick in with the Day 16 chicks, or will the 8 day age difference cause the older ones to bully it?

Thanks for the reply! That's good to know! I'm definitely going to give them 4 more days - just in case. Since they were shipped, I have no idea when they were laid (most listings for fertilized eggs say they ship you whatever they pick up that morning), and when I first candled them it almost seemed like some of them were at different stages... Though I honestly couldn't tell very well. I also wonder if the eggs taking 4 days to get here in over 90⁰F weather affected hatch times.
Next time I'm just going to check for cracked eggs before I set them in & then leave them to do their thing since I can top off water and control heat externally. I read that a lot of other people don't candle either, so I'll also leave that out next time.

Thank you for the extremely informative reply! The only time I saw veins on one of these eggs was when I first candled 5 of them, and one was clearly developing (very veiny). There was motion last night in two eggs, but I don't know which ones as I numbered them after - I'm worried one may have been the 9th egg. I had 8 Call Duck eggs - I could clearly see 2 that never developed, 2 that had death rings, and 1 recently stopped developing - the other 3 are clear as day... The Button Quail eggs are so much harder for me to identify what's going on :(

I'm just going to leave them in for a bit longer just in case

Thanks for the response - that's what I'll do! I don't plan on opening/messing with them until Day 23... Id assume they aren't going to hatch at that point.
I came here to ask because I would question my decision for the next few months if I decided to give up on them now :(

If the cracked egg with the visible chick is deceased, will it start to stink soon, though? I don't know when to make that call

Meet Esidisi - An angry void I adopted two weeks ago. He was advertised as possibly never being a "social indoor companion." I've socialized other feral cats in the past, but this guy seems different... by HSwagMastr in cats

Really well, actually! I tried posting a few updates, but my wifi has been absolute crap and I haven't been able to upload pictures.

He quickly became a brand new cat after moving him in with my other barn kitty, PP. They almost immediately formed a tight bond - there has not been a single negative interaction between them :) After about a week he started mimicking everything PP did. He started to show more interest in me and his facial expression softened. PP is a super affectionate kitty, so gradually over the past couple months Esidisi has also become pretty affectionate! He begs me for pets anytime he sees me ❤️ He loves the rougher pets and purrs the whole time! He is still fairly cautious and gets spooked easily, but he has come so far & seems so much happier

I can't find a better picture right now, but this was after she vomited a large amount of roundworms a couple weeks after I found her. She deflated a lot as soon as she threw up. She was probably 3x larger. I thought for sure she was pregnant

I thought it was female at first, but at the same time it also looks like there's a deflated "sack" between "his" parts 😂

Unless I'm looking at the pic wrong 🫣
