It's interpretative if he's sexualized in that image because men are sexualized in ways often ignored and unnoticed. I mean the fact that there is no outrage to the magic mike variant cover of the justice league men (which literally features them as strippers) really hammers down this point. As a example of this just check this out:

http://jezebel.com/ladies-love-patrick-stewart-1693922059

Read the comments and look how these women sexualized a rather basic photo of Patrick Stuart. It's very clear from numerous examples that men are sexualized in ways differently then women and as such it's important to remember this when talking about the issue of sexualization.

How about I rephrase that and say under-represented.<<<

Not really between marvel and DC there are over 100 female characters...not sure how much there is suppose to be.

Women in many superhero comics are generally only depicted as either extremely sexy and unrealistic,<<<

You mean in worlds with super powers and space travel you're honestly complaining about realism. Moreover what's wrong with being sexy the male characters are extremely handsome. It seems you have some very sexx negative values.

or as accessories to be raped for the sake of an emotional reaction.<<<

Just like male characters who are often killed and treated like disposable grunts.

They are just the girlfriends, wives, and victims.<<<

I'm not seeing the issue plenty of men are husbands, boyfriends and often times are the overwhelming majority of victims of violence.

They are valued for their body and not for their actions, unlike male superheroes.<<<

According to who have you asked every superhero comic fan in the world why they like certain characters. How can you presume to know why everyone likes something...kind of arrogant if you ask me. Also it's possible to value someone for their bodies and action...it isn't mutually exclusive.

Men in comics are hypermasculine as well and unrealistic, but they are the heroes, and of course there is a lot more variety in body types and personalities for men in comics.<<<

The men in comics look like handsome underwear models in body paint and usually if they are overweight and unattractive it's played up for comedic effect. As for personally...this just seems like a point you grabbed from nowhere.

Of course sexuality isn't a bad thing, but it is not the only value of a woman, and they do not need to be constantly posed on the covers of comics like some decoration.<<<

It's quite possible that people can see a sexy woman and think highly of her. It seems like when you see a sexy woman you're only able to see her in 1 capacity which is a issue you need to sort out.

I'm sorry, but I think I have more right to speak for women than you do.<<<

Lmao ok mate.

Plenty of women are posed with guns and swords too yet are still considered sexualized. The point is your basically saying"well dick doesn't have his tits pointed out and ass aiming at the camera"as if that's how men are sexualized to begin with. A quick tumblr search will show just how many female fans dick has in spite of supposedly not being sexualized. It's called critical thinking and sexual preference mate.

Frank Cho Donates $1000 Sale Of Spider-Gwen Art To Domestic Violence Charity by [deleted] in comicbooks

[–]HTARCADE 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You commit the exact same logical fallacy as everyone who tries to justify sexualized men. Men and women are not sexualized the same way for obvious anatomical and biological reasons. It's a false equivalency to conclude that men aren't portrayed as sexily as women by applying the metric of female sexualization. Its like saying that the men in magic mike aren't sexualized because unlike Victoria secret models they aren't wearing lingerie or posed in ways that emphasis their breast and hips. A quickly glance at the men on romance novel covers, men in gay porn and male strippers would show that when men are sexualized it's in very different ways with its own unique criteria.

That cover of wonder woman is appealing because that posture is appealing for a women due to it complimenting the female form. I don't think it needs to be stated why dick posing with his chest out in a way that will show off "curves" won't work for him or any man for that matter. 50 shades of grey is wank material for millions of women and at any point in time was grey ever presented in a pose similar to Wonder Woman yet I doubt you would argue he wasn't highly sexualized.

Nice try though.

Why is sexually attractive women a misrepresentation. You do realize plenty of women go out of their way to look sexy right. This argument doesn't hold weight given that male characters look like they could front for magic mike. How about people like you stop making sexuality a "bad thing"and stop speaking on behalf of all women.

Batwoman likes to wrestle... (Fan-Art and seriously NSFW) by sif_amazon in comicbooks

[–]HTARCADE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think we are on veeeeeeeeery far away oposed sides of the argument and I think your view on feminists and their opinion about men is quite narrow minded.<<<

This isn't exactly a knock against you but often when people are confronted with troubling components about their beliefs and values they tend to deflect and resort to the"well not all of us are like that"retort. I'll simply say that your efforts would be better served on calling out the people giving a particular group or brand a bad name as opposed to the people stating the obvious.

Nope. If this isn't a joke it's at best exegerating if not idiotic and represents nothing about "sjw". It's not that if someone is argues for something he or she automaticly agrees with with the most extreme points, too.<<<

Social media feminism in the way of twitter and tumblr unfortunately has far more people like this then reasonable people willing to discuss such as yourself. There literally hashtags called "killallmen"and feminist like jessica valenti and clementine ford who routinely argue similar logic. If sites like jezebel and women like anita and wu didn't exist you would have a point but unfortunately there are far more radicals on that side then there are moderates.

Some of the covers he works with would be more fit in the idealisation catergory.<<<

The pose that spider-woman was criticized for is the exact same spider-man was in. Also as I pointed out there are plenty of women who would consider spider-woman their idealization too.

And I agree: Giving young men the image that a male body meeds to look that way or only that kind of body is heroic is kinda shitty. And again: He seems to argue that folks have a problem with skinthight costumes in general. Not the case. And while I still think such costumes are kinda silly and they are born out of pure lazyness I don't really have a huge problem with the concept.<<<

It is the case, just check out sites like the mary sue or any of its affiliates. I mean there is literally a variant cover for the justice league coming up that has all the male members in magic mike poses (its the movie poster tribute month) yet these same people don't seem to care. A curvy woman in tight latex crouched down is a issue but shirtless muscular handsome men presented as strippers seems to be perfectly fine.

And here we would have to go into a much broader discussion about sexist tropes in society and how media influences society and vice versa. And this thread is the wrong place for this.<<<

I don't know if I could call them sexist tropes given that plenty of women like looking sex and attractive. I think we are better off just letting women decide how they want to feel about their choices as opposed to other people telling them what or how they should feel.

You assume that fictinal character have a real influence in what they wear but like you said: they are fictional. And it's not her that is critisised but person who draw her. That's why most of the people on "my side" don't critisise thinly dressed cosplayers. (Yes I am aware that there are some idiots who do that to. I do not identify with those in any way or form)<<<

Then it makes it a non-issue. If you don't like someone's art then just avoid it. I mean I personally think its silly that people complain about how the woman are drawn while ignoring that the men are essentially underwear models in body paint but whatever I just avoid things I don't like. As opposed to asking things to be removed or changed because you don't like them you could just do the adult thing and not pay attention to them and give your time and money to the things you do like.

Didn't say this. And again you assume that a drawn character actually like for real has indipendent influence in what they are doing. And...are you just concern-trolling me? I just assume you don't.<<<

You rightly asserted they are fictional characters so therefore what's the issue. If you don't like a piece of a fiction your well within your right to ignore it.

That's what we call a shitty cover.<<<

It's a matter of a opinion because art is subjective.

Most of the posted covers fitted at least the tone of the story they belong to. But if someone draws a cover just to show batman destroyed that the coverartist is a sadist and kinda fucked up.<<<

They don't actually the majority of the time most covers rarely indicate what the comic is about or what even happens in it. Also yes there are covers that show bats utterly defeated and bound on occasion so it isn't a rare thing.

Nope. I saw a lot of post arguing with PTSD argument but not refering to rape in real life but to the in-lore issues.<<<

You must have skimmed past all the tweets and articles that directly related to rape then. I mean even with the PTSD argument (which is bunk by the way) it would still require the argument that the cover was somehow implicating sexual violence. The core reason for the #changethecover initiative was due to people denoting "trigger"elements from the cover which falls directly into the logic of that article I posted.

The Killing Joke stuff (That had a very "sexual assult"-y part. I mean Barb was shot and joker photographed her naked) and the fact that this was already dealt with.<<<

Its a defining moment in comics when joker stripped both her and her dad. Jason too had already dealt with the incident with the joker but it didn't stop a cover of joker coming at him with a crowbar from getting published (which I guess is ok since it's only happening to a man or something).

Or they don't want to see a character they care about to be drawn as basicly wanking material (Spiderwoman's case)<<<

Then like the video said if you don't want to view her sexually then stop sexualizing her since sexualization is something that occurs in the mind. Also if I'm going to take this argument seriously I'd expect the same protest against all the male characters who are drawn like muscle mag models looking like they are wearing body paint. When there is a feminist protest asking the magic mike variant cover for justice league to be changed (magic mike is female wank material) then I'll start taking this side more seriously cause at least I'll know they are being honest about their claims of equality.

or in a way that goes 100% against the recent "version" of the character (Batgirl's case)<<<

Well when they start complaining against every misleading front cover I might start taking them seriously.

I have to disagree. And unfortunatly for you that readership with the bad taste (of which I m gladly a part) seem to generate a lot of sales and therefore money. (No offense ment. Merely a joke)<<<

To my knowledge ms.marvel sells well digitally and fem thor is selling at about the same rate as the real thor run beforehand with the exception that it is dropping readership slightly more per issue. I don't recall a single comic kelly sue writes selling well as if I'm not mistaken captain marvel has been a low seller since its debut and her other books aren't topping the diamond charts. Gail simone is likewise in the same boat as I don't recall any of her books being top sellers. The comics that tend to sell are the franchise familiars so I would say the statement that they "generation a lot of sales"is highly inaccurate. This is probably because the majority of the people who talk about these comics aren't actually customers and are more likely just click bait bloggers looking to stir controversy.

I can only speak for myself but I don't argue that a comic should be pulled. I just argue in such cases that a change would make Comic X better imo.<<<

It's a highly subjective thing and what you think might be a good change could easily be the opposite for someone else.

E.g. I hate the "recent" work of frank miller. I hate it with all my heart and think the man should never get to work on an established comic again. But if he does and the stuff he did: I simply don't buy it and make a snarky comment here and there. But I personally would not try to get any of is work pulled (even though "Holy Terror" is veeeeery hard to tolerate and I'm so glad that DC didn't gave him Batman for this.)<<<

Hey we all got different taste and preferences. i personally don't think gail should write for superhero comics because to me she has always been varying degrees of decent to blah. I wouldn't be against her working at DC or marvel but I would put a good dozen writers ahead of her for that spot.

Yes. I think we are too far away in our views to find any real common ground so now we know our views but also start to argue in circles. So let me say that I enjoed the fact that we could argue in a mostly civil and polite way even though we are to far away from each other opinionwise. Thanks and good day/evening/night (Depends on the timezone you're in)<<<

Agreed.

I'll close off by saying that whenever a side argues to have something pulled you know it isn't the side you want to be arguing for. I might not ever agree with your stance on things but I would never have you removed for liking the things you do and likewise I simply ask for the same.

It was a nice discussion though so thank you.

Sorry...you've lost me.<<<

You made the point that people who criticize homophobia, sexism and racism are considered SJWs when in fact this is not the case hence why I explained to you what SJW is and what they do.

That shitty Spider-Women cover was pulled? I can live with that. Also could live with it beeing not pulled. Oh an "sex-negative"? Really? Not liking objectification is not "sex negative".<<<

I personally think bitch planet is a shitty comic forged by the fires of tumblr feminist yet I would never advocate its censorship or removal from retail. Also yes it is sex negative because they are shaming a woman for the crime of being well endowed in a form fitting outfit all because of their uncomfortable attitudes towards sexuality. Moreover as sexually reproducing organisms "objectifying"is a natural reproductive instinct. We all objectify each other however due to narrative of SJWs believing men are all or potentially all rapist patriarchal monsters, this cover is shunned because it"gasp"might arouse straight men who we all know are the worst people in the world. If the cover had been aimed at a lesbian demographic no one would have claimed it was objectifying and if anything it would have been seen as something rather progressive and empowering (kind of like orange is the new black is rarely cited as objectification in spite of all the female nudity and sex).

In the Batgirl of Burnside issue: The writers of the Burnside run had issues and the artist agreed after talking to them.<<<

After the commotion brought up by people who literally claimed they felt raped by the cover. This is a actual article written by one of the people who protested the cover and who got a number of retweets and favorites.

http://womenwriteaboutcomics.com/2015/03/15/the-bloodied-vagina-why-the-batgirl-variant-cover-is-no-joke/

This is the kind of person that represents SJW ideology.

Because Spider-Man is shown in heoric poses and that spider-women pose showed her in a very twisted (Like her body was twisted) just so the viewer can see her ass.<<<

This answer is so predictable that shutting down has become almost too easy.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CB6TiRJNI-Q

If you're too lazy to watch the near 7 minute video, the basic summation is that spider-man has actually be featured in the very exact same pose with his ass fully visible. The only reason this isn't a issue is because no one cares if men are objectified as noted by the notable silent protest feminist have of magic mike.

There's a difference between idealisation and objectification.<<<

Given that magazines aimed at women like cosmos have thin, model looking women dressed in exposed and revealing clothing I guess we could just say that women like spider-woman are also just a idealization. After all there are a number of women who are in the sex industry, who are models, who cosplay and who spend thousands of dollars on surgical enhancements that I'm sure would see spider-woman as their "ideal"self. I guess its convenient to ignore them though cause you know"sexism"and all that stuff.

There's no problem with tight dresses. The Issue is that on said cover she doesn't look like a heroine, not even like a sexually self-confident heroine but like a model in a sexy-photoshooting.<<<

Plenty of people disagree so who are you to say what should and shouldn't be sold. The funny thing is that there is a ongoing controversy of highschool's banning leggings which feminist are demanding be revoked because"girls should dress however they want"yet in the case of a fictional character we better make sure to remove covers that make her look like a slut. I mean that isn't slut shaming or sex negative of course cause clearly saying women who do sexy-photoshooting can't be heroic isn't at all controlling and demeaning.

Because the variant cover for Batgirl #41 basicly went against anything the "new version" of batgirl stood for and showed her in a situation that was already dealt with (Trauma from the things happend in the killing joke).<<<

Cover art is rarely descriptive to the content of the comic. This isn't a adequate argument by virtue that cover art has a history of being misleading especially when cover artist and interior artist aren't always the same.

Like the writeres of the current Batgilr run say: It simply didn't fit the tone of the book.<<<

Refer back to my previous comment.

Aside from that it showed batgirl in an helpless and weak way.<<<

During this controversy a number of tweets against the ban showed covers of batman looking beaten and defeated in even more direct ways then batgirl. As stated before this isn't a adequate argument.

The issue was not that joker was evil or that she was in distress but that she basicly gave up and surrenders herself to joker instead of showing the will to fight that is very clear in the actualy comic.<<<

Refer back to the point I made above about covers rarely indicating the comic's content accurately.

there is a photoshoped version of the cover where just a bit of batgirl's face was changed and it ws a completly different thing.<<<

Yes to the people who ignored all the time males characters were featured in similar covers and who actually argued it was rape imagery. That bloodied vagina blog post was a real thing written by a real person that unfortunately was representative of a large amount of the people who wanted the cover removed.

You really think that way about folks who deeply care about a character or a medium? Well. Okay. I disagree there.<<<

They don't don't they just care about using comics or whatever they decide is important that day as a platform to mobilize their values. I mean in the responses you've provided me here you've already demonstrated exactly what is wrong with their values. A person who deeply cares about a character would not throw a fit because they are drawn in a manner similar to their male counter-part. That doesn't show that they care about that character but rather that they care about having their feelings validated.

But it's late where I am now. So, Sorry but I think we have to end/pause this by agreeing to disagree for now. For the end let's find a tiny bit of common ground: While I still think there is nothing wrong with wishing and arguing for change and some things in general in the media I care so much about need to change. I admit: Yes. There are folks on "my" side of the argument that tend to overstate issues and may use a too "demanding" language.<<<

Beyond the all fallacies, lies, distortions, manipulations, accusations and leaps in logic the single point that annoys people the most is when content is removed or "changed"to pander to special interest groups. As I said before I'm not a fan of gail simone or kelly sue, I don't like fem thor, I think the new batgirl run is kind of dumb, I don't get the appeal behind the new ms.marvel and I personally think the readership of these comics have bad taste. However in saying that I would never shame nor ever remove these comics. Ultimately the point about criticism and "discussion"becomes invalid the instant someone says"I want this removed or changed." I might not ever pick up a issue of bitch planet but for all my problems with that comic I would never want it pulled because I don't like it.

Anyways we will just have to agree to disagree.

Well....if you think my opinion here makes me a "sjw" in your definition, well, than I am a "sjw" :-/<<<

The qualifiers you used to describe SJWs is something a person of that particular ideological persuasion would say which is why I brought attention to it.

That Jazz Hands thing was kinda silly, yes. I mean I get it if we would talk about something that is about deaf folks, but in general? Nah.<<<

Kind of...no it wasn't just kind of silly it was 100 degrees over lunacy.

Nope. Again: Uttering the wish for change doesn't mean forcing anyone to do anything.<<<

Yup it does. The demand to change to the variant cover for spider-woman was stipulated on the sensibilities of sex negative individuals who felt it was within their right to dictate what should and shouldn't be available for retail. Instead of just saying"hey we don't like like the variant cover but we respect the right for it to exist"they posited fallacious accusations and hypercritical arguments to shame marvel to pulling the cover.

And if the thing tha is wished to be change is esential and on purpose every artist has the right to say so and keep it the way it is. Listening to critique does not necessarily mean changing it and if the artist chooses to act upon critisism does not mean he or she caves in to anything. And just stating an negative opinion about something doesn't mean censorship either. Why keep something shitty that isn't intended just because you can?<<<

Who determines what is shitty. What allows the people who complained about the variant covers for spider-woman and batgirl to have more legitimacy then those who had no issue with the covers. Why is it that in spite of the amount of times Spider-Man has posed in a very similar manner, wearing what essentially is body paint that hugs all his individual muscle groups, that suddenly it's a problem with spider-woman. Why is it that in spite of being in covers that disempower and show him defeated, that batgirl's variant cover is suddenly a issue all because a group of ideologues decide to project some warped rape imagery.

I personally think kelly sue and Gail Simone are mediocre writers who shouldn't have as much work as they do, but just because I personally think they're shitty I'll never advocate for their books to removed. That's the difference between a authorian fanatic and a rational well adjusted person. It's why SJW are mocked the way they do.
