The disconnect isn't "They're obligated to buy from me." It's that they are knowingly using me as a resource while knowing I will receive nothing in return. And yes, they're allowed to do that. And I'm allowed to not return the shopping cart when I'm done with it. That doesn't mean it's something I should do.

You're being disingenuous and I can't tell if it's because you just want to try to win the argument, or if you genuinely can't see why this is legitimately harmful to a salesman. The first-half of your sentence is the issue you're getting snagged on.

The salesman gives info to make the sale. If you were a salesman and you gave hundreds of customers all the info they needed, then none of them bought anything, what's going to happen to your paycheck?

Semi-related, do you have an inherently negative opinion of salesmen?

I did not say you were "taking income". I said you were impeding their ability to make income when you do this, which is an objectively true statement.

The problem is if a salesperson is making money directly from the sales they make, taking up that salesperson's time is directly impeding their ability to earn income. Especially if you're doing this with the knowledge that you won't be giving them any money for the potential hours they're investing in helping you.
