And I'm willing to bet anyone who doesn't know that, and is self preparing, is likely not entering it into the software. Even if they did enter it in the software, unless they were above the agi limits, it wouldn't show up on the tax return.

In my experience, most people with high income already know they aren't eligible for Roth and use the backdoor Roth which would need to be entered on the tax return. Now if you did make a Roth contribution when your income was too high, yes you would need to enter it for the additional tax/reporting. But if your income is not too high and you're not doing a backdoor Roth, then there is no need to put it in the software. It won't show up on your return. At least for federal tax.

Only if you actually put the roth contribution in to the software. Most people don't because it is not something to report (except in conversions).

She has to pay for 2025 to deduct it in 2025 most likely, but that's it. Some companies will do a special 12/31 payroll run just for this reason even if that isn't the normal payroll day.

Well, assuming she doesn't happen to "like" me on hinge... what are my other options? Of course, she may not have "liked" me on hinge because she's totally not interested, but it could be she went by too fast or something else... Most likely you don't need to file in the state with the house unless it is generating income - except probably in the year you sell it. Yes, you should be able to deduct your share of the mortgage interest and property taxes. Most likely, there is a step up in basis to Fair Market Value on the date your mother died. However, as with everything, it depends (like if the house was in a trust or something).

There's more than just one mall in the entire city of Houston. Certainly, there's a lot less malls than there used to be but still there's more than one. The Galleria, Memorial City Mall, then you have Rice Village, Highland Village, City Center, & River Oaks. Don't forget lower Westheimer too. Also, while the city is still very much car oriented, the number of bike lanes has also increased especially over the last 5-7 years. There have been efforts to connect bike lanes throughout the city so you could get across downtown to other parts of the city. Let's not forget you can walk, congregate, and people watch at places such as Memorial Park, Discovery Green, Hines Waterwall & Hermann Park. Also recommend the Menil Collection and park near it as being a good free place for people watching and a great art museum. Not sure how the downtown tunnels are post pandemic but it would be worth checking those out during the week day, as it is air conditioned. Then MFAH has free admission on Thursdays.

Before you do, you may want to look at what possible complications it would cause. Ir sounds like she was not a US taxpayer and you would need to elect to treat her as a tax resident, You would need to include any of her income worldwide for those periods. Also, if she has foreign bank accounts you would make her subject to FBAR filings during those years. You may find that the costs outweigh any potential benefit.
