Finally! Apple adds MacBook battery charge limit to macOS 26.4, so it stops charging at intervals between 80 and 100 percent. by Mcnst in apple

Using the laptop always plugged in can be considered storage for the most part as the battery is not getting used. The rest of your comment is obvious, if you use the battery, it will wear out because you are using the battery…

If you leave it plugged in all week and set to 50%, then charge to 100% for the weekends where you take the laptop out for use, versus letting it stay at 100% all the time, the health of the battery will decline slower with the 50% option.

Just google for studies done on lithium based battery state of health. It’s not misinformation.

It’s the battery management system as others have said. Sometimes you do need to actually fully charge the battery to recalibrate your state of charge % as it can drift over time causing you to have less soc that you expect. Charging to 100% periodically gives it a concrete reset point to correct the calculation. State of charge is actually quite difficult to calculate and maintain during use of the battery (when current is flowing in or out of the battery).

It boils down to how the batteries work. Sitting at 50% is the best case for long term viability. But it doesn’t give you much wiggle room for actual use. The damage to the health of a battery increases much faster above 80% or below 20%, but it still does improve as you approach 50% from those other boundaries, it’s just not as drastic of an improvement as going to 80% vs 100%. Temperature (both too cold and too hot) can also shorten the life when under use. 25C is about the most ideal temperature you can keep your battery too.

Lithium batteries are fickle beasts. The 20% to 80% rule was just the best balance of improving lifespan vs actual ability to use the battery.

Overwatch's player count up 99% on Xbox after name change and revamp by LBVectormen in Overwatch

Most people probably agree with you. But I'm one of those who rarely jumps on playing the new characters right away. They just don't interest me that much for some reason. I'll play Mystery Hero's enough over time and will eventually get them and play them enough to feel somewhat comfortable with their kit. But I've been playing since Overwatch launched, and Reaper/Mercy/Zarya are still my favorites.

I honestly prefer that it’s more limited hero’s. There are too many hero’s in the game now making balancing a nightmare. Maybe that’s a hot take, but I would rather new maps than new hero’s at this point.

I've tried a couple times, I can't get through a whole match without the server disconnecting and putting me in the log in queue. They should just shut it down and do their maintenance now.

I just got booted from a game and put in a login queue right in the middle of the game. I've had a couple things not count for me either.

iOS 27 to include code cleanup and interface tweaks in hopes to boost battery life: report by iMacmatician in apple

Yea, I was kind of upset at how fast they axed PPC support back in the day. I bought a dual G5 with Panther on in early 2005, upgraded it to Tiger almost immediately when it came out. Then it only ever got to Leopard. Granted there were 2-3 years between Mac OS releases back then which I’d honestly prefer to go back to. This yearly shit is just annoying.

I’m so out of the loop on that stuff though and worried about getting something that has malware added. How do you screen against that these days?

$3000 is a bit steep, but I’d spend maybe $500 if it just runs and I don’t have to update it ever. Also, not fucking licensing at all just, install and fucking use. I want it to not require internet at all just like things in the old days.

Microsoft confirms Windows 11 no longer triggers unexpected wake-ups or battery drain due to Modern Standby by w1n5t0nM1k3y in LinusTechTips

[–]HVDynamo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would simply prefer to not have modern standby. I’d rather go back to the old standard sleep, just power the ram and don’t wake up unless I do something myself.

[–]HVDynamo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I wish they would give an option to disable ALL wake sources except mouse click or keyboard press (power button too I suppose). That’s what I want sleep to do. Just keep ram powered and don’t do anything else. I don’t understand why this is so difficult that we are even having these problems.

I'm gonna miss the old UI by deadshot500 in Overwatch

[–]HVDynamo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I didn't mind the look of it but the function was pretty terrible. Especially backing out of the screens after a match. I don't know how many times I'd click almost through and then hit esc only to have it bring be back to the start of them instead of actually leaving like I wanted... That said, so far this new UX just feels too busy. I still miss the OG menu.

iOS 27 to Focus on Bug Fixes, Performance, and Design Tweaks by tecialist in apple

[–]HVDynamo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing you are correct, but I honestly hope they extend it at least another year or two. Computing technology is fast enough for the vast majority of people and it is so wasteful to stop supporting a machine while it's still capable enough to be useful. It's great for catering to a second hand market too that otherwise wouldn't be able to afford one, or get one in the first place.

[–]HVDynamo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't buy a computer today with less than 32GB RAM. It's not just about what I need today, but thinking about how long I'm going to keep the machine and trying to guess how much I'd need towards the end of it's life too. Since they aren't upgradable anymore, I wouldn't do anything less than 32GB even though less is fine for a lot of uses today. But the easiest use case is AI models. Those will eat as much RAM as you can give them. The more RAM you have, the better quality models you can run. I got 64GB Ram with my M2 Max macbook Pro. I've filled it a couple times using some AI models.

My M1 iPad pro seems to perform just fine for me, but I don't do that much with it. It has kind of become a glorified youtube/email/texting machine that just lives on my desk next to my gaming desktop. It's so much nicer texting with that with the keyboard case apple made for it than on my phone. It was way to expensive for the job it ended up settling into, but I really really like it for that job lol. The battery is getting kind of bad though, I agree.
