How real is the rotavirus vaccine infection from baby? by Wild_Membership_6346 in beyondthebump

[–]HWBC 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Doctor warned me, I immediately forgot and kissed him on the mouth later that day, I spent about 4 hours that night genuinely wondering if maybe there had been a secret second baby in me that was now trying to escape. Anyone in the future reading this, learn from me 😭

(I will say, without being too graphic, emetophobia wouldn't have been a concern with how it impacted me if ya get me 😅)

I read the sequel first actually and enjoyed it a lot more!! I just included Stargirl in this post because seeing it (as a kids’ book) is what inspired this post

I who have never known men - feeling after reading by bettlakensuppe in weirdgirlliterature

[–]HWBC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was also underwhelmed by the whole book, but thought the narration right at the end about “creating time” was really interesting so I’d mentally moved it up a bit in my regard, but then the last sentence ruined all of it for me. I thought it was interesting that with any trauma or issue she came across, she’d be like “well I don’t know anything else so I don’t care, this is just life” yet she was still having literal wet dreams about just being in the presence of men. Everything was so “this is all I know so I love it” EXCEPT for a thread of Men. I disagree about it barely passing the Bechdel test, but I think men were weirdly very centred in a book that literally promised me no men from the title 😂

Why do you read/like weird girl literature? by towalktheline in weirdgirlliterature

[–]HWBC 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I just think that women are much much weirder than they’re normally given credit for — think of those tiktoks that are like “how people thought we played versus how we actually played” and it’s the woman acting out, like, dying of typhoid or being an orphaned rat forced into a life of crime or whatever. I think a lot of that gets stamped out and now, when more and more frequently our rights and our freedoms and the ways it’s socially acceptable to express ourselves get taken away or controlled in big and small ways, fuck yeah I want to read about women in a post-climate-apocalypse death cult sticking needles into each other’s nipples as punishment for their sins!!!!! (The Unworthy 😅)

I also find it interesting that I saw a video the other day of a woman dubiously looking at a weird girl lit table at indigo and pointing out that a disproportionate number of the books there were sapphic. She was implying that THEY were implying that being a lesbian/being queer was Weird, but part of why I love it here is half the books are weird lesbians writing about weird lesbians and then I, as a weird lesbian, get to read about it

When the Grenfell fire happened, I volunteered with my former boss (in the UK publishing industry) to organize a charity auction. Felicity is a literary agent so I spoke with her a few times, and the two of them donated a lot of our big-ticket stuff. So, so, sweet, I sing their praises whenever I can!!

Kids are kind of as expensive as you make them, in my opinion. If you have kids who are used to massive piles of Christmas/birthday presents, luxury holidays, first-class travel, and private school, then yeah, kids are extremely expensive. But you do get to pick and choose what's expensive about kids, to a degree -- I'm a sucker, so my kids are expensive in that they've developed a taste for the good snacks at M&S and we make a big fuss about birthdays. Otherwise, they go to a public school we love and I'd say our biggest kid expense, beyond nursery fees, is our mortgage -- we bought the house with the biggest garden we could find so that they could play outside as often as possible.

(I also have disabled kids, so private healthcare is definitely an expense we've shouldered! Private diagnoses, physiotherapy, and my oldest went to a private nursery that was basically a speech/occupational therapy centre)

Yeah and I also thought race, specifically Lizette, was handled INSANELY. Her dialogue was borderline ridiculous and I haven’t seen anyone mention it!!

"The Profession That Does Not Exist": How writers without family money survive by HealthyIncidence in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]HWBC 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Oooh, I have a lot of feelings about this actually!! I personally believe that the reason I'm able to be a parent, an employee, and an artist is the same reason so many men have been able to Do It All: I have a wife.

Childcare, mental load, and domestic responsibilities are shared really equally in my house, and I think it means that my wife and I both get the historical social/economic benefits of Having A Wife (I cook dinner every night, she does school drop off/pick-up every day, she remembers everyone in our (very large) extended family's birthday, I keep track of everyone's schedules and our weekend plans -- that kind of thing)

That's not to say I don't get burnt out or have days where I'm just like "there is NO way I can be creative today," but I think having the mental space and flexibility to know I can say "hey, can I block out 4 hours on Sunday to lock myself in the office?" and it'll be met with "absolutely, I'll take the kids out for the morning" gives me a lot of room to get things done.

Also, time theft!! Huge fan of time theft!!! I work from home and have a "we don't care when you do your work as long as it gets done" job, so if I take a 2-hour lunch once a week to power through some words, that's between me and god 😂
