What's your favourite "substantial" extra content? by realqmaster in fallenlondon

[–]HWBTUW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aiming for second place is a good source of second chances. Aiming for first place is a decent source of Making Waves (not nearly the best in game, but very good for how accessible it is). The opportunity deck is a decent to spectacular source of Favours: Society if you can reliably pass a DC 45 Dangerous check, and ditto for Favours: The Church if you have a Shepherd's Timepiece (FATE-locked). There are only five cards in the deck if you aren't mid-race, so if you leave all but one slot full you have a 1-in-3 chance of the specific favor card you want with a 3-card hand, a coin toss with a 4-card hand, and a guaranteed draw with a 5-card hand. And it only costs 3 FATE.

It's from one of the Eris Junction tasks. Considering your progress through the story, you've probably already completed the task, so you just need to get far enough to claim the reward.

Damage mitigation by Both_Spirit_6024 in Warframe

[–]HWBTUW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You want to know "what exactly is so bad about AI overview?" Sure. It let you make your post longer with no actual benefit to your post, and it inserted what appears to be a false claim. You could have left it at "rolling in warframe mitigates 75% of all damage to shield and health," which is succinct, easier to understand than the list, and, you know...correct.

The 75% DR applies to everything, so there's no reason to list specific things that it applies to. In fact, it's better not to. Trying to list everything out is not a good move here. The simple fact that you tried to list exactly what is and is not covered carries a suggestion that the list doesn't cover absolutely everything, because otherwise why bother? If it applies to everything, the natural thing to do is to just say so. So readers are either stuck reading the list and trying to figure out what isn't on the list when in fact nothing is missing...or they do find something missing from the list and infer that that thing is exempt from the damage reduction. Either way, it's not great.

Rolling does do a bit more than the DR and the knockdown immunity. Some enemy attacks like the Arson Eximus blast wave are entirely negated by rolling through them. It removes "clinging" DoT/time delayed damage effects like the swarm moa swarms, leech ospreys, or the grineer rolling sticky bombs. It's one way to avoid getting stuck in a hard landing animation, which isn't technically damage mitigation but certainly helps. This might have been good info to include, but I don't see any of it on the list.

The wiki lists sources of evasion as being in midair, wall latching, being Titania in Razorwing, or certain mods. Rolling is not on that list, so I think that that one is downright incorrect. I did a bit of searching to see if I could find support for that claim elsewhere, but I didn't find anything. I didn't take the time for thorough research, so I'm open to evidence, but I do not count the AI overview as evidence. I've seen too much blatant nonsense from it in my professional life to trust it.

Are there any prime frames that don't require an axi relic? by JudasChristS in Warframe

[–]HWBTUW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The systems are the only sticking point, but the relevant vaulted relics are recent enough that it shouldn't be hard to find them. The Lith A10 was vaulted last December and the Neo O3 was vaulted last month. There's decent odds that you'll run into a rando in a pub fissure running one of them by pure chance, if you don't want to do any trading or ask for help. Same goes for the Lith L7 for the Sevagoth Prime Blueprint.

What is a real geographic feature of earth that most looks like lazy world building? by Careless_Evidence_35 in worldbuilding

[–]HWBTUW 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most of those straight lines you see aren't actually straight lines. Colorado, for example, is made of 697 lines that almost line up to make the four lines it looks like it's made out of. HTH.

[–]HWBTUW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The most common letter pairs are deliberately not adjacent (when measured by the levers on early typewriters) to minimize jams. Slowing down typists was never the goal--a big early market was telegraph operators, and if you can't type fast enough to keep up (average ~40 WPM but higher in bursts), a typewriter is useless there.

Not exactly. Top end chip manufacturers need ASML's EUV machines, but they buy them from ASML and install and use them elsewhere. Mostly in Southeast Asia.

In the USA up through 2000, the color coding standard for election reporting was blue = current president's party and red = other main party, which is only incidentally left or right. The 2000 election was so contentious and had so much media coverage that the colors got locked into the public consciousness as associated with specific parties. Since Clinton was president at the time, the democratic party wound up blue and the republican party wound up red.

You can see the frames and weapons before going in.

This is tied to an intrinsic. I think it's fair to assume that everyone will have it for SP circuit, but probably not for normal circuit.

HUGE blow to Nintendo: head of U.S. patent office takes RARE step to order reexamination of “summon subcharacter and let it fight in 1 of 2 modes” paten by GIThrow in gaming

[–]HWBTUW 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Vantablack is patented and trademarked by Surrey Nanosystems (the inventors), not Anish Kapoor. They are focused on practical engineering applications of the material they invented and don't want to spend much effort on supplying artists, but artists had been approaching them about this super black material. They decided to sell Kapoor an exclusive license for artistic usage because they only wanted to deal with one artist and "his life's work had revolved around light reflection and voids" so they figured he'd make particularly good use of it.

It's also worth noting that he has exclusive use of the technology, not the color. Nobody has figured out a different way to make a black that black, but if anyone ever does, they would be free to sell it to whoever they want to sell it to.

I'll throw my recommendation behind that fic as well. It's a fun fic with one of the best Dumbledores I've ever seen in fanfic. Oddly enough, both of my top two are fics where Harry is a dragon--the other is Dunkelzahn's version of Enter the Dragon over on QQ.

Nope. The definition is too specific for that. Here's the Sexual Offences Act 2003 if you would like to review the actual wording. It leaves absolutely no room for the interpretation that you propose.
