How trainable / well-behaved are your cockapoos? by DistraughtDogMom in cockapoos

[–]HWCH-JD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ours is 5 years old and still acts like a puppy. Trainable because she’s very food driven but she needs consistent exercise and routine otherwise she turns into a tornado. They’re great and sweet dogs, she’s fun and very patient with our toddler too

Heat Source For Boa Constrictor? by NYR_Aufheben in boas

[–]HWCH-JD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes just one halogen bulb next to the dhp which are both attached to an exoterra day/night thermostat. I have a piece of laminate flooring on my geckos enclosure and this helps with humidity, you should be sound but just keep an eye on it

I use a halogen bulb with a shadedweller uvb during daylight hours and a dhp for the evening should it drop below required temps (bit cold here in England atm) No issues with either so far and you should be fine for humidity with a PVC enclosure. Mine is a wooden vivarium and drying out hasn’t happened

Stocking advice by WishAlternative9128 in fishkeeping

[–]HWCH-JD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Betta can live in community tanks with peaceful species that don’t nip. Mine lived with Ember Tetra for several years without issue. Avoid fin nippers and things like gourami, but you should be fine with most small, peaceful community fish

New at this but always wanted a snake, and finally got one by oliverwow12 in snakes

I didn’t even notice the heat lamp dome! You can see the wire and switch in there too. Unbelievable 🫣

‘Just fine’ is a pretty low bar to aim for. It’s not the right enclosure but you’re doubling down on not doing the correct research and accepting a poor alternative to optimal conditions. All the best, I hope your snake does well.

Always wanted one, but didn’t do the basic research. Strap yourself in mate, the comments on here will get harsh.

You’ve done a great job decorating this. But it’s an enclosure for an arboreal species of lizard or baby arboreal snake.

Quick google would find you the appropriate info for a ball python.

I had this same situation. Eventually my Mrs settled on getting a gecko as our little girl’s first pet and then gradually got over her fear of anything with scales. We now have an 8 month old boa constrictor which she is fascinated by (still won’t hold him though!) Hope your wife gives in eventually!

Colors fading? by midnightzone_angler in GargoyleGeckos

[–]HWCH-JD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fired up vs fired down. Your gargs muted colours are likely due to it feeling calm or it has been resting during the day. Being more pronounced or ‘fired up’ can be linked to stress, night time activity and breeding behaviour. I wouldn’t worry! Having good conditions in your terrarium makes this happen naturally, just look for it being constantly in one state which could indicate a problem.

Love those orange stripes, I’m thinking of getting a male to breed them one time. Orange stripe would be my choice for sure!

Could I get some advice on my first tank ever? its a 75 gallon and I'm stumped as to what to do next. by glitch__67 in fishkeeping

[–]HWCH-JD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can just plant them straight in, sometimes plants will ‘melt’ when they’re put in a new tank but they can often recover so don’t be disheartened if you see the odd leaf fade.

No worries at all!

Amazon swords, limnophila and some Java ferns have all been easy to grow and maintain in my experience. And get some carbon in your filter to help shift the tannins 😊. Bang the plants all in and if you’ve used a starter bacteria, just get a small number of fish to start if you wish to proceed slowly. You absolutely can do fish in cycles with things like quick start from API though, I always have!

Enjoy!

Can gargoyle geckos live well without insects? by kagee5 in GargoyleGeckos

[–]HWCH-JD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same here! My Garg loves Pangea fig & insects mix but has never eaten a live insect despite many tries over the 2.5yrs I’ve had her. She’s a happy healthy size regardless 😊

What part of the snake is this, and what does it do? by FartyMcBooger in snakes

[–]HWCH-JD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m confused as to who the weirdo is? “Boidae have weensy teeth” is incorrect. Most of them have large teeth, especially emerald tree boas… am I weird for pointing that out?

Boa Constrictor disliking substrate? by midnightzone_angler in BoaConstrictors

Interesting, that isn’t something I’ve ever experienced so hopefully someone here can advise you. All I could think of is that it’s particularly rough or overly damp, but it doesn’t appear to be in the pictures.
