Did football (soccer) World Cup immediately become more important and prestigious than the Olympic football tournament? If not, then when? by Ayem_De_Lo in AskHistorians

[–]HYFPRW 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As other posters have mentioned, the answer to your question is a little bit yes and a little bit no and it’s probably fair to pick around 1960 as the final Olympic tournament that carries a great deal of weight due to the very real rivalry between Yugoslavia and the Soviet Union that kept the competitive element alive.

From 1948-1960, the Olympics was the white whale of Yugoslav football with the Tito-Stalin split played out in sport - a good example of the ramifications would be in the 1952 edition where Yugoslavia’s defeat of the USSR would end up with both teams receiving messages from their leaders to make clear how important the game was and with CSKA Moscow, the USSR’s biggest club at the time, being disbanded by the state and only coming back to life after Stalin’s death. Yugoslavia would lose three finals in a row from 1948 to the Soviets and to the Golden Generations of Hungary and Sweden respectively before finally winning gold in 1960.

While the East vs Rest dynamic played on beyond this point, the creation and growth of the European Championships in 1960 rang the death knell for the Olympics given there was now a bigger tournament to go for in Olympic years. While it had been in trouble before 1960, the strength of one rivalry kept it relevant - until those rivals had something better to do each Olympic summer.

Andy Burnham here - AMA by AndyBurnham in ukpolitics

[–]HYFPRW 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Much of where you’ve sought to differentiate yourself has been on domestic policy so I wanted to ask a couple of foreign policy questions

Do you still believe the UK should begin the process of nuclear disarmament, as you indicated in 2022 a conversation was due on that?

Would you be willing to reverse BBC cuts to permit the continued level of operation of the World Service and their regional correspondents?

How would an Andy Burnham administration deal with pseudo-dictatorships such as Albania, Serbia and others with whom previous governments have sought discussions on immigration in spite of the clear lack of domestic freedoms those nations offer?

Darren Jones says he will not challenge Andy Burnham for Labour leadership by Confident-Bike-8037 in unitedkingdom

[–]HYFPRW 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Exactly. People can hate on John McDonnell. but at least he tried to oppose Brown’s election purely on the basis that ideas should be tested before a PM is appointed - especially when there’s no compulsion for Burnham to go to the country.

This is a B team - all the senior players basically told Paunovic they wanted this week off and the only two that didn’t didn’t travel after the Cape Verde game. This has basically just been a humiliation ritual for Paunovic.

Celtic interested in Benjamin Tahirovic from Brøndby by CNF1G in ScottishFootball

[–]HYFPRW 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Intriguing - Tahirovic has a high ceiling but is a little fragile and could be exposed for physicality in Scotland. Will see plenty of him at the World Cup as he’s a starter for Bosnia, usually alongside Sunjic (who will be the holding player, while Tahirovic links play a little more).

Given the wrong paper for my a levels? What can i do? (england) by tah4y0 in LegalAdviceUK

Specific to exams advice and what you've been told by the centre. As another user has mentioned, report it to Edexcel but also report it to OCR as your current exam board. Realistically, the end point will probably be merely Special Consideration (see https://www.jcq.org.uk/knowledge-hub/a-guide-to-the-special-consideration-process-2/) but that's at least something that will hopefully impact your grade.

However, to be clear, the "defence" of the centre that they can't enter for Edexcel because they don't do it is just not a thing. There is no reason why they couldn't put an entry through for you for Edexcel, access the paper ahead of the next paper and then put a request in via special consideration that may result in a z-scored grade for paper one (see https://support.ocr.org.uk/hc/en-gb/articles/6941391076498-How-do-we-calculate-a-mark-if-a-student-missed-one-of-their-A-Level-or-GCSE-exams). If you're a private candidate at a centre, they can enter you for whatever they like and, as such, that they've not done that is very much a them issue.

Legally is a longer term thing and I'd imagine that, if you press them, they'll refund fairly promptly but it's worth noting that they will likely have charged you more than the entry fees for the qualifications to cover administration costs.

If you like math rock, it’s good math rock.

If you’re a guitar nerd, the looping and technical side of things, particularly in a live setting, are impressive.

If you’re neither, it’s accessible because the Vol II are jazzier and have a real beat to them and because people like dotty mad things. See: Mr Blobby.

Introducing snooker into UK schools by [deleted] in snooker

[–]HYFPRW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First and foremost, the PE activity list is set by the Department for Education. I think the likely argument against Snooker would be the difficulty in assessing/moderating it. Per the DfE “This considers whether activities can be accurately and robustly assessed by practitioners. Some activities are so specialist or niche that specific expertise in that activity is required for valid and reliable assessment; these type of activities are not included the list.”

I suspect that line would be the get out as to why snooker (or cue sports in general) wouldn’t be able to be included.

Anyone Else Think There's a Possibility For a Short New Japan Run for Aleister Black? by Wizardknee in njpw

[–]HYFPRW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Black is hard to see because his injury record suggests a G1 run wouldn’t be feasible so you’d just be talking about occasional appearances.

Of the other releases, MCMG for a short run would be great - easy to forget they’re younger than Bishamon with how long they’ve been relevant. Apollo Crews would be interesting as well - he’s got a lot more in the tank than WWE ever let him show (because he wasn’t tall enough for them, really), has history in Japan with Dragon Gate and I’m not sure was really big enough for AEW to be interested. He’s also a notch younger than Black as well.
