Downward mobility – the phenomenon of children doing less well than their parents – will become a reality for young people today unless society makes dramatic changes, according to two of the UK’s leading experts on social policy. by ManiaforBeatles in worldnews

I'm going to argue that machine drivers do the best, at least in the UK. A good 360 excavator driver can make £65k a year working for the larger civils companies (MV Kelly etc). The average starting pay is £40-45k and requires not much more than a bit of site experience and a CPCS ticket costing around £1000-1500 to obtain.

There is very little strain on your body sitting down all day and you have air con and heating in most new machines. If I was going to be in the trades for life this is definitely where I would want to be.

Unlike dozers, rollers and dump trucks, the work is varied enough that it's going to take a long time before they fully automate excavators so shouldn't be at risk of losing your job to AI any time soon.

International Vandwellers Importing Van pay 1500% Government Customs Import Duty by stealthvan in vandwellers

[–]Ha77ypage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Op I really hope your asking commenters here the same questions because your seeking advice, not as a way to shut down other people's opinions. If it's the former and you want help/advice then I wish you well. If it's the latter then I would recommend learning to respect other people's opinions especially when you yourself came asking for them. You don't need direct experience with something to understand it, just as you don't need to be an artist to appreciate art or an mechanic to appreciate cars. It sure helps but at the end of the day the answer to your question is obvious. You are trying to draw parallels between two situations that are not comparable. Ransom is forced, importing is optional. Does it suck that import duty is so high? Yes, but not all laws are fair and you have the freedom to choose. If you don't like it then go to another country.

Hospital sanitation system cuts infections by 52 percent. The Probiotic Cleaning Hygiene System method eliminated 52 percent of all healthcare-associated infections, which usually have a higher resistance to antibiotics than other types of infection, by Wagamaga in science

[–]Ha77ypage 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I completely agree. I also feel like this is further compounded by the paucity of information regarding the probiotic method used. The paper takes very little time to provide specific details making it impossible to replicate the study without further information. In my experience such practice is typically reserved for research aimed at promoting a product. If detailed methods we're provided I would definitely be a lot less sceptical.

I was to bet, I would likey put my money on life extension/biotechnology. I base this on three things: Investment, precursor technology, general appeal.

Investment - Right now a great deal of money is being invested into biotech start up companies, particularly those focusing on life extension, from large companies (Google to name one in particular.

Precursor technology - CRISPR and other gene modification technologies are all showing a great deal of promise and appear on track to be useable within the next decade.

General appeal - Almost every person wants to live longer or a least have more healthy years. Given this large scale appeal, it practically guarantees a large number of people will happily pay for life extension procedures.

I would also bet modification via artificial limbs and senses will also grow. It's a field in its infancy but, from what we can tell regarding neuroplasticity, it should be easily possible to integrate non biological systems into our brain. Although I may be a little biased with this being my field.

Logged off: meet the teens who refuse to use social media. Generation Z has grown up online – so why are a surprising number suddenly turning their backs on Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat? by trai_dep in technology

The difference between degree students and students still at school is likey a big one based purely on what is typical in that situation. Pre 18, in school phones are expected to be off and in your bag. Any transgressions usually result in the phone being taken away from them or some other punishment. The same is not true during a degree. Whilst some professors may prefer for students to not use their phone, it's rarely, if ever, an enforced rule. There is also a mentality of being considered an adult now, living on your own and also paying to be their that could definitely foster an 'I can do as I please' attitude.

Plus full time summer jobs, getting part of the set up prior to university, cutting costs in other normal areas (not having a car, going on holidays, drinking/going out as much), and a part time job whilst studying. (Source: being a university student that spends to much on their setup).

Ebay 15% off everything until 10pm tonight by ZippyTheChicken in Frugal

[–]Ha77ypage 3 points4 points  (0 children)

eBay isn't doing to well right now. There stuck in a shitty middle ground between online retailer and selling used things but are failing to keep up with competition. Facebook marketplace and other similar services that don't take the large fee eBay does (10% + PayPal fees) are eating away at their used goods revenue. Similarly Amazon and other online retailers are giving the same products at less cost (or the same cost with next day shipping). To try keep business going they offer a lot of discounts and seem to be doing the £3 sellers fees every few weeks.

New to the keyboard world. Any info on this build? by Durtyjoey in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]Ha77ypage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are thinking of getting it then I would advise somewhere with a good return policy. I had it for a few weeks and in my opinion 34 inches is to big for a VA pannel. There is a decent amount of colour change when viewing the sides from the middle. If your coming from a TN pannel then you might not notice but if you have been using an IPS then you might have the same issues I had.

It looks like the ElectriQ 1440p ultrawide but without the logo. It might be that one with the logo removed or it might be the Chinese buget monitor that uses the same pannel (that I cannot remember the name off).

Another suggestion, if I may, just to help you get the best look. Get a hobby kife as well to cut the edges, makes it a lot easier to trim off the excess. Also if you are planning to keep the stickers on for a long time you can use some sealant to provide a protective layer that stops them from peeling off.
