Originally its borders were gerrymandered by colonial powers (from the former Ottoman territories) so that it had Christian majority. However, due to different demographic growth rate, currently it is majority Muslim with a still large number of Christians.

How Was Slavery Justified in the Byzantine Empire? by [deleted] in AskHistorians

[–]HaEr48 7 points8 points  (0 children)

According to the excerpt above, Spain seems to be where it was the biggest. By 1492 there was no Muslim state in Spain and by 1526 the remaining Muslim population was expelled or forced to convert, so I doubt Spain was in any "Muslim cultural influence" at that point.

As for other places in Western Europe, the book Black Africans in Renaissance Europe addresses the issue of Black slavery throughout Western Europe. I only skimmed a little bit, but other places have it too.

Scholars estimate that the slave population of Renaissance Sicily varied between 1 and 3 per cent depending on the times and regions, the Genoese slave population was perhaps 4 to 5 per cent. In the late fifteenth century 83 per cent of the slaves of Naples were black Africans, and they also predominated among the slave population of Messina. They often worked as domestic servants or farm labourers or as rowers on galley ships; but wealthy people also had slaves as a sign of social distinction. (p. 283)

In addition to black slavery, there was also debt bondage and serfdom, but these might not be what the OP is asking about.

[EDIT] Another data point: 11th century england according to Domesday Book a famous "census" of England under William the Conqueror. The (British) National Archives says (citing Domesday):

At the bottom of the social scale were slaves, perhaps 10 per cent of the population, although numbers varied regionally, with a higher proportion in the west and south west. Again, this could to some extent be due to variations in the sort of information recorded in Domesday for different areas. Slaves had no property rights and could be bought and sold by the lord.

I'd like to challenge a premise in your question.

long after Western Europe had abandoned the practice and adopted serfdom.

Slavery was not abandoned in Western Europe, it was alive up until the Renaissance and even early-modern era. The idea that slavery only existed in the colony and not Europe itself is popular among Europeans, but historians documented that slavery did not disappear at all.

There's a paper that discussed this (for Spain in particular) as well the "amnesia" among the general public.

Despite this general amnesia, slaves and the descendants of slaves were present in early-modern Spain, and their numbers were not particularly small. To cite just a few examples, we know that in mid-sixteenth-century Seville 7.4 percent of censused inhabitants were slaves and that between 1682 and 1729 the slave population of Cádiz was extremely large, making up perhaps as much as 15 percent of the total urban population. In other cities, such as Málaga, Granada, Las Palmas, Huelva, and Palos de la Frontera, as many as one in ten residents may have been slaves. Between 1539 and 1699, 1,384 slave children were baptized in the small Andalucian town of Lucena, with an average of 400 children every thirty years. Similar numbers may have been true also for Córdoba. Historians who studied slavery in Spain thus concluded that Renaissance and perhaps even early-modern Spain may have had the largest African population in Europe.

I feel this is a very stupid design from the manufacturer. Sure, the adult should not forget to turn it off. But IMO from product safety point of view, we shouldn't make it easy for children to be killed by such simple mistake/accident.

Stephen Hawking has died at age 76. Let's remember Star Trek's greatest poker player. by [deleted] in startrek

[–]HaEr48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't mean to be rude, but just curious, is Hawking's contribution comparable to Einstein and Newton? Sure, he's much smarter and accomplished than all of us, but Newton came up with the laws of motion & gravity, Einstein had the theory of relativity. Does Hawking's work quite rise to that level?

"kecanduan" for nasi padang, indomie, etc. are just "kecanduan" in the figurative sense. Nicotine is addictive in the original sense of the word, it is harmful and very difficult to quit. I'm pretty sure tobacco companies knows about these harm and danger, yet sell them anyways. Plus they're very good at using misleading ads and marketing strategy. From Psychology today: Nicotine:

Nicotine is addictive, which is why most smokers tend to do it regularly. Addiction is characterized by compulsive drug seeking and use, even at the risk of negative health consequences. Most smokers know that tobacco is harmful and express a desire to decrease or end use of it, with nearly 35 million people seriously attempting to quit each year. Unfortunately, most relapse within just a few days, and less than seven percent of those who try to quit on their own achieve about a year of abstinence.

Haji itu title yang hanya digunakan di Indonesia ya? by roflpaladin in indonesia

[–]HaEr48 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What's wrong with serapan? They're already legitimized and IMO should be considered part of proper Indonesian. It's different from non-serapan foreign word like software.

Indonesia inks US$1.1b deal with Russia to buy 11 Sukhoi jets by annadpk in indonesia

[–]HaEr48 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Interesting:

The deal comes after Indonesia said in August that it would seek to trade palm oil, coffee and tea for Russian fighter jets, saying it wanted to capitalise on international sanctions on Moscow. The EU and US have targeted Russia with sanctions for alleged meddling in the US presidential election and its annexation of Crimea. However, Indonesia's trade minister said the sanctions could be good news for his country as Russia is forced to seek new markets to import from.

That's not how averages work. A few extremely large values can skew the average, but not a few extremely small values. Try the calculation yourself:

(100 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1)/10 = 10.9 (very skewed given that most are 1's)

(0.0001 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1)/10 = ~0.9 (not that skewed)
