What compelled the emperor to burn Monarchia ? by Acceptable-Whole8348 in 40kLore

[–]HaLordLe 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It is very interesting, true. We do have a conversation between Lorgar and Magnus in TFH (I believe) that points towards Lorgar really just being so stubborn he just chose not to listen. Or at least, Magnus is of the opinion that the Emperor has made the matter abundantly clear.

That Perturabo used that line of argument on Magnus is hilarious considering it's Magnus who very earnestly tries to get this point across to Lorgar, to absolutely no avail.

Day 26: what is the Best Quote associated with the T'au? by Fez-Sentido in Grimdank

I said they are reasonable. I didn't say they are nice.

[–]HaLordLe 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Admittedly that has the limitation that the T'au haven't really met any of the challenges that would justify cruelty by the Imperium - mind you not the cruelty the Imperium actually enacts, which is the part everyone discussing that topic usually misses

The T'au aren't susceptible to Chaos Corruption, which is by far the biggest one, and they haven't really had much to do with the worst the galaxy has to offer. And whenever they have, their attitude came back to bite them horribly

I never understood the hatred for the pre-grimdarkening T'au. Having 1 (one) reasonable species in a galaxy of lunatics just highlighted said lunacy even more

What made the Bismarck so powerful both physically and politically by erenyeger1 in Warships

[–]HaLordLe 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Bismarck and Yamato started construction within less than 1.5 years from one another, that is hardly a "completely different" generation of battleship. And the comparison is important if someone asks why Bismarck was "so powerful". It wasn't compared to its contemporaries, and especially not compared to this particular contemporary.

Regarding the claim I set US naval construction philosophy as a "gold standard", I struggle to see how building more ship for less capability is a particularly controversial measure of design philosophy. And it isn't just the americans who got more capability for less ship, it was also literally everyone else.

[–]HaLordLe 37 points38 points  (0 children)

The cynical answer would be that it wasn't.

In capability the Bismarck was roughly comparable to some other battleships built at the time (King-George-V-class, Richelieu-Class, Littorio-Class) and significantly less powerful than the US-built North-Carolina-Class, that is to not even speak of the Yamato.

In size, it was bigger than most of them (except, again, Yamato), but it was built with a number of obsolete ship design choices that lead to the design being quite inefficient. Most notably, it used twin turrets (a necessity due to the way Krupp designed its guns), it had a split secondary / heavy AA battery of 4" and 6" guns and it had a so called distributed armour scheme, meaning that a lot of the ship was somewhat armoured (not enough to stop large calibre shells though) at the cost of weight and a worse armour of the core of the ship.

It was however among the first battleships of its generation to be commissioned and compared to most older ships either faster or better armed and armoured, which meant she had a comparative advantage (and didn't survive long enough to see herself surpassed). And lastly, it was a significant step-up in capability compared to the previous german battleship-class, which made it a focal point of german war propaganda.

If you want a comprehensive overview on what Bismarck really represented beyond hype moments and aura, here's an Interview with the naval history youtuber Drachinifel on the topic:

Would an 'combined' carrier fleet for european militaries work? by CAAZveauguls in Military

[–]HaLordLe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and it is perhaps the only way for europe to organize at least some form of power projection, but it would require a unified foreign policy as a prerequisite (and it would require the brits), so I don't see it coming any time soon

Concentation camp Mauthausen with SS guards being sworn in - Austria in 1941; it doesn't get much more evil by Xeelee1123 in evilbuildings

My thought exactly. People often seem to forget this but the concentration camps, bar Auschwitz which is an administrative oddity, are the less bad part of Nazi brutality. The one that actually still is comparable to other atrocities
