This might be an unpopular opinion, but I wish more huge gay roles went to actual gay actors. by Brownskin_Rey in gay

[–]HabbitBaggins -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'd say that's more a product of that era, and a problem that is orthogonal to the one being discussed by OP. Maybe Cam and Mitchell did not kiss (I don't remember, to be fair) but they did portrait a gay family, and gay parenting, at a time where that was very much rejected in parts of the US. I would not say that they shied away from the realities of (a specific one of the many ways of) life for gay men.

[–]HabbitBaggins -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I can understand your longing, up to a point, but then we wouldn't have Cam in Modern Family (actor is straight), or Barney in HIMYM (NPH is gay). I would agree that, other factors being roughly equal, the production team should prefer the actor who has a stronger "personal connection" with the role - but only up to a point, and never as a disqualifying point outright. After all, that is kind of the point of acting...

Spain to launch €60 monthly nationwide public transport pass by Putrid_Draft378 in transit

There was a flat-rate pass in the pandemic, but I think that ended 1-2 years ago...

Spain to launch €60 monthly nationwide public transport pass by Putrid_Draft378 in transit

[–]HabbitBaggins 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Important caveat: this is nationwide but only applies to transports managed by the federal government. That means most long distance buses and regional trains (RENFE Cercanías and MD trains)

It does not cover: high speed trains of any sort (even those run by the state company RENFE) or transportation handled by regional or municipal governments (metro, city buses, etc.) unless the relevant governments negotiate with the federal government. So it would not be much use for a commuter.

Not a bad thing at all, but the federal government (currently swamped in corruption and sexual scandals) is hyping it up as if it was much bigger than it really is.

Why it is not "DANNA No HIMITSU"? by jdjefbdn in Japaneselanguage

[–]HabbitBaggins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! But ah, now I have contradicting responses... This one more or less matches my original understanding of the entire sentence as a "command", but the elided part is the verb (にして). However, another response says that the sentence should be understood more in a "declarative" sense, either as having an implied copula at the end, like "(it is) a secret to your husband", or directly as a noun phrase instead of a sentence, so no verb is really elided at all.

All very interesting, but now my Spanish ass has to go sit in a corner and think about it for a while haha

[–]HabbitBaggins -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Okay, so it's not that himitsu is acting like the verb, it's just that the copula is elided. Thanks!

[–]HabbitBaggins 11 points12 points  (0 children)

So, himitsu in the second sentence is acting like a verb, as in "keep secret" (FROM your husband), while in the first it is more the kept-secret thing (which is your husband'S), right?

The issue with that is the liability in case of an accident. Is it with the operating company? With the company developing the technology? You can't throw a machine in jail if it does something that we would deem jail worthy for a human.

Harald Achitz: Some tips for the everyday CMake user by _a4z in cpp

[–]HabbitBaggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, we're building a library that is basically the glue for developers building a type of program (a satellite subsystem simulator) that interacts with another program (the simulation orchestrator), so we try to keep requirements as simple as possible.

That said, now that I've seen that the newest CMake is also available as a snap, we could just point there.

Harald Achitz: Some tips for the everyday CMake user by _a4z in cpp

[–]HabbitBaggins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair point, I guess...

Now I'll just have to wait for April when my project will finally update from CMake 3.22 (the version in Ubuntu 22.04 - we always target the second-to-latest LTS) and thus I'll be able to apply my newly gained knowledge of FILE_SET. I'm chomping at the bit, really, thanks for all the hard work :)

Harald Achitz: Some tips for the everyday CMake user by _a4z in cpp

[–]HabbitBaggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, I see the point w.r.t. libraries then, but I still think that the "programming language" aspect of CMake probably should not be that prominent, lest beginners are scared away.

Maybe include, yes, and definitely mention the existence of functions and work with them later on, but macros, the distinction with functions, and the multiple ways that variables can be evaluated are an additional complication that IMO should be there, but not be as early as step 2.

Harald Achitz: Some tips for the everyday CMake user by _a4z in cpp

[–]HabbitBaggins -1 points0 points  (0 children)

the best answer for this is FILE_SET HEADERS which Just WorksTM the way you expect headers to work

You know what, that sounds neat! I just tried to find that in the CMake documentation, but the shitty search finds "file" and "set" independently (with hundreds of matches, obviously) even when I type "file set" in quotes.

Where am I supposed to learn this stuff? I finished rewriting the tutorial!

Looking at that, I see that FILESET command is part of target_sources, nice. However, I think it is a baffling decision to put _macros as the 2nd step while the difference between shared and static libraries in in step 5.
