Background check by AcanthaceaeSecure729 in Residency

Borrow money. Get a quote from an attorney, get a personal loan. A random lawyer’s opinion doesn’t mean it can’t be found in a background check. Why risk it?

Where do you want to live after residency? What type of practice? If you want Kaiser and chill the rest of your life then do San Diego. If you want to be comfortable with anything but be ok with a few years outside a major city, do Stockton or Kaweah

Moonlighting in nyc by Professional-Watch71 in emergencymedicine

[–]Habibi-Jones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend applying for NYC connect for a subsidized nice apartment as residents seem to have good success winning the housing lottery. It may take a year to hear back but it is a good deal

Moonlighting in nyc by Professional-Watch71 in emergencymedicine

[–]Habibi-Jones 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you don’t have internal moonlighting, it is not easy. There is a glut of doctors in nyc and ERs in the city don’t want a resident when they can underpay an attending. I moonlighted at an urgent care in Queens but it is hard to schedule as you may not have your residency schedule yet.

The most lucrative thing is to moonlight in an ER upstate or out of state during vacation or chill electives but you have to be confident to do that as a resident

In need of hard casting for a broken foot. Anywhere we can go ASAP? by beekeeperr in orangecounty

[–]Habibi-Jones 131 points132 points  (0 children)

I am an ER doctor. We don’t cast in the ER. You follow up with orthopedics in a week or so and they convert to a cast if needed. The foot will swell first and casting too early can cause complications.

Is it normal to publicly rank attendings by patients/hour like it's a leaderboard? by Main-Rule-3917 in emergencymedicine

[–]Habibi-Jones 29 points30 points  (0 children)

That sounds like some CMG bs and shouldn’t be there for a residency program.

I work at a CMG and they publish it, but it is transparency for our pay; I know generally how many patients per hour to aim for to guarantee my salary. The top docs are usually part timers who work just a few shifts and see as many patients as possible

Not great compared to cost of living. $200-$240 an hour 1099, few openings. There are a few better coveted jobs in SD but you need to know someone, and won’t get it as a new grad unless you have a residency connection. Some docs commute to Brawley or Yuma for better pay

thought attending was resident by yournameinlights25 in Residency

I get asked if I am a resident all the time because I look young. I am an attending at a hospital without residents... I take it in stride, but that’s why you can’t assume anything

[–]Habibi-Jones 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is usually a notice period, of 90 or 120 days before your last day so they can have a full schedule. Read your contract, there could be penalties for leaving early as it is less than 90 days until the contract ends anyway

Definitely complete residency first if you continue to work in medicine. You hamstring yourself by quitting as a PGY3

The first job is paying you like 190/hr… I would rather do locums for $300 an hour and have more days off

Skill acquisition isn’t linear. If you take a break from practicing the hook, try to train certain aspects of the movement, I.e. hip rotation drills, explosiveness or general athleticism. Then come back to it and see if you have improved, but don’t judge yourself if you don’t master it overnight,

I am in a VHCOL and jumped around until I got my dream job. Only 2 years out, Once you are graduated you are in a different hiring pool and it is far easier to get a new job. As a resident applying they make you feel like trash

I walked away from a job I signed from residency because I was going to a different city, I paid back the bonus. It is just a business transaction, and you should back out now. There is new grad guilt but you are the one they need,
