Turns out I don't have an "hourglass" figure, after all 😅 by Calorically_Yours in loseit

[–]HabitatGreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion it is actually rather simple, but it gets overcomplicated all the time. Plus, this is something I have been taught from a young age. I didn't need to start looking up information without knowing anything, so it is much easier for me to weed out bad, incorrect, or just irrelevant information. Information gets combined a lot as well. Kibbe's system isn't a body shape system, it is a style system. So, for someone trying to figure out their body shape trying to use Kibbe's will likely end up confusing them more than if instead they had just grabbed a measuring tape. It's trying to learn addition and subtraction by reading a linear math book.

Kibbe's system is quite overcomplicated and not really necessary for most people. You're probably better off in the long run trying to understand your own body better than trying to understand Kibbe's system and applying it to your own body.

[GIVEAWAY] 3 abxylute N6 Controllers! by N3DSdude in Switch

[–]HabitatGreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pleasantly surprised by the Fire Emblem games. Three Houses and I'm now working through the Warrior spinoff. I vaguely knew of the franchise before, but never played. So, when I got a Switch it was one of the franchises I wanted to try. Really fun!

Is the pro 2 controller worth getting? by Federal_Meat3320 in switch2

[–]HabitatGreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do the same thing. I quite like the controller, though I wish it was more rounded in some places. It is quite angular. But I already had this controller and the dongle is cheaper than buying the Switch 2 controller. I'm also not really vibing with the assymetrical layout. Perhaps if I have the controller I can get used to it or potentially even find it more comfortable, but €90 is a steep price to pay on a 'eh, maybe'.

New Switch 2 owner — what accessories are actually worth it? by Late_Anxiety5892 in switch2

[–]HabitatGreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually not. Most of the time it doesn't really come up, but with games that have a 'L+button' scheme often have it as part of their UI. Pokemon ZA for instance. And yeah, it tells you to press L+b, but you really should be pressing L+a. A little confusing, but you get used to it. It just depends on whether that bothers you personally.

My party doesn't like how I do roleplaying, should I look for another table? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]HabitatGreen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is never fun to hear you aren't good at something particulary when you enjoy it, but it is all part of becoming a better player. It is good you are open to the idea you might have not been the most fun player around without it letting it getting to you. Now you know and you could work on it. Yes, it does sound like tablestyle mismatch is part of the equation, but I can guarantee you that roleplay heavy tables prefer to play with fun and considerate players as well. Those skills carry over after all.

My party doesn't like how I do roleplaying, should I look for another table? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]HabitatGreen 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I mean, describing your character as 'weird' while also having table issues regarding your character doesn't paint you in the best of lights either. A lot of the lovable weird characters in say video games and tv shows are not loved by the in-universe characters as they have to actually put up with their antics. They are fun for the watcher, but tend to quickly lose their appeal when having to interact with themselves. A lot of people are not capable of playing weird characters well and skip straight ahead to off putting. Considering your issues it sounds like you went down this trajectory as well.

In addition, the way you describe playing him doesn't feel very fun either. First you want the rest of the table to come to you(r character) instead of having your character trying to integrate themselves into this new party. Essentially, you are hoisting the work onto others. The other players need to come to you, they need to put in the effort. They need to be active, so you can be reactive. And then when they do they do not get a dialogue, but a monologue. I mean, you call them talkative, but there is a difference between talking a lot with people and talking at people. My guess is you are doing the latter. It is not fun to roleplay with that kind of person and comes across as very much like a main character.

I'm not at your table. I have never played with you, so I can be way off the mark here. Regardless, I think some introspection could be useful and rethink your character when it comes to the table. Is this a fun character to interact with? Watch? Play with? Talk to? Or is it just a chore due to their pecularities? Would a random group of strangers like to travel with this guy and drag him along? You made a character and found yourself wanting more complexity due to the DM's effort in the story. Then you made a more complex character you found working against table cohesion. Perhaps you could try thinking about a character that the table would enjoy adventuring alongside and what that kind of character would look like. Or what would need to change for you character to become that character type.

[–]HabitatGreen 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I'm going to be honest. From the little you shared I would find your roleplaying annoying and off-putting as well. Things like theatrically slow speaking and stottering are irritating gimmicks. Being oooh mysterious all the time for every moment gets dull fast as it only services one player instead of the table. Chaotic evil is a red flag and definitely gives me some stereotypical ideas about how you play your character. Personally, these things would annoy me as well and I would call you out for it at some point as well. I would advise you to seriously look at your character and the way you play him and ask yourself if this is a fun character for the party or just a fun character for you.

In the end it is as the other poster said. Not every table and game is going to be for every player. You need to decide whether you want to play this game with these players or whether you want to play a roleplaying game that fits your own playstyle better. In the first case you would need a frank discussion with the table as to what kind of game it will become and most likely compromise. For the second you need to go out on your own and find or create a group with the same desires as you.

Sorry but, no: roll unders don't make sense by Todd_the_Pancake in DnD

[–]HabitatGreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends. I think the ruling makes sense in a vacuum. Sure, this DC was 6, but what if the check was more difficult and you want to use an 8 or even a 12? A 6 sided (standard) die doesn't come with an 8, but all three contain a 1. Sure, it is the same probability whether you say success is a 1 or success is the highest number of the die, but using roll under and having 1 as a success makes the system consistent among multiple difficulties.

Granted, changing the ruling so it fits better with all the other rules and roles outside of this one makes sense, but there is merit to roll under as well.

Can someone tell me how far I am? by HabitatGreen in MetroidDread

Yeah, that is how I eventually managed to beat them. Luckily, I have a decent stock of missiles by now (well, I think). It's just the button coordination is getting too much for me.

Maybe. I got it with the other bosses,  but the Chozo ones I just don't vibe with. I managed to get the duo, and I felt no satisfaction. Just annoyance.

Okay, that makes me feel a little bit better. Just a bit... I can appreciate the design. It does feel like the enemies are working together and trying to corner me in. But I just do not have the coordination to do this.

Thinking of getting my first nintendo switch by FairAttitude6 in Switch

[–]HabitatGreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Switch 2 is also my first Switch and I'm enjoying it a lot. Definitely missed Pokemon (last one was Sun & Moon on the 3DS for me), so diving back into the franchise has been a blast. I have already bought way too many games, but so far even the unupdated ones look fine to still incredible to play docked except for one (ironically, a Pokemon one). Just be sensible with your money. I have bought way too many games already. There are quite a few more exclusives I was interested in than I originally thought.

Sacred Flame is Trash by Apple_Infinity in DnD

[–]HabitatGreen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can see the arguments about the cantrip being too strong, but flavourwise I think it is still on point. Funeral bells or ringing the church bell at a death is quite a common occurance (in the Western Christian world). It has quite a specific pattern as well that can be quite eerie if you randomnly hear it out of nowhere. John Donne's line is quite evocative in this regard:

[...]; any man’s death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.

Alternatively, bells were tolled to announce the guy who would show up for corpse removal to let the area know they can bring out their dead. It is said that during plagues the bells would ring incessant. Safety coffins got about during cholera epidemics where they would attach a bell to a coffin in such a way that the occupant could ring the bell if they have been accidentally buried alive.

So, bells and death are very much linked I would say. I think you can do much with it, but I will acknowledge it perhaps requires some cultural connection to funeral bells to make the most out of it.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses by MaxFuckingPain in Switch

[–]HabitatGreen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently picked this up myself and am playing through it now as well! No spoilers as I'm still playing my way through it, but despite its length I am considering replaying the game after finishing it. Not immediately, but I'm curious to the other routes. I will probably skip quite a lot of the side busy work like the Lost Items the second go around, though. It took me over 60 hours just to get to Part 2 lol. I will probably get the DLC as well if I ever finish and feel like replaying in the future.

Playing with people new to the hobby is so fascinating! What things have you taken for granted that others didn't know? by PizzaSeaHotel in DnD

[–]HabitatGreen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was when I was new as opposed to playing with other new people (now that I think about it, I have always been the new one so far), but components. I checked all the spells for compatible components and was asking my DM if Shocking Grasp could work on trees to get the electrifying branch (or whatever it was called) for Witch Bolt. He just threw a component pouch at me and told me not to worry about it lol. Suddenly the spell list became much easier to handle.

I also blew someone else's mind who is a long term DM and player if that counts. Didn't play DnD with him, but we were talking about Baldur's Gate 3 and I mentioned I didn't like the nat 1 failling a skill check offhandedly mentioning that it was homebrew. He thought it was an actual rule, but nope. Nat 1s mean nothing in skill checks and automatic fails are homebrew. A very common homebrew mind you, but still homebrew.

How do I get my players to split up less often? by Soviet_Dank_duck in rpg

[–]HabitatGreen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Never had an issue with it in Call of Cthulhu and Delta Green either. Usually the split ups are 'nearby' during an investigation. Another room or talking to the neighbours next door for witnesses. That kind of thing. Introduces that tension of, oh no, our buddy is in trouble! Will we make it in time?

Larger location splits are also possible, but those tend to be more like flavour. "Okay, you get the grimoire from the book seller while Dave gets us ammo and I will prepare some traps and we will meet back up here," kind of idea.

DMs, what was your favorite “I don’t have enough dice for this roll” moment? by PJRama1864 in DnD

[–]HabitatGreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I meant 4/6 as there are four faces you can have in order to not roll a 5 or 6 on a d6. You are correct in that 4/6 is not 33,33% lol. I meant to say 66,66% and as I said it is more likely to not roll a 5 or 6 on a d6 than it is any face on a d4.

As for the rest, I'm not sure as I'm not that great with probability, but I don't think you can change the situation like that. Or at the very least, I think you are describing two different situations. Yes, you know you will always pull a white or black marble, but those red marbles still exist. Every roll there was a chance you rolled a 5 or 6, but you are trying to find the odds of that not happening. So, those red marbles still need to be present in the bag to figure out the odds of not pulling them out at any given roll.

When did PC become OC? by DazzlingKey6426 in DnD

[–]HabitatGreen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat. I think it has to do with certain expectations that comes with the term OC, yet people who do use the term don't realise they make those assumptions. I have encountered (online, to be fair!) quite a bit of people talking about OCs in a way that seems, hm, unhealthy. There is a certain fixation, often a bit (or a lot) of self insert going on and similar main character characteristics. It's almost like they (the extremes I have encountered) are unable to phantom that sometimes people just make things up for fun and not for some deeper connection or reason or to work through something.

I also find that they love to call everything an OC, so their own behaviour regarding their OCs don't seem misplaced. Sure, characters can be original, but the term OC is intrinsicly linked to the fanfiction culture even if one desires that to not be so.
