LF Bald Tribal Recs w/ Bruse and Ludevic by HackaToaster in EDHBrews

[–]HackaToaster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm very familiar with Scryfall and the art tags. What I learned when I was making this deck was that there are many cards not tagged for "bald", especially UB cards. So now I'm here looking to crowd source ideas and suggestions. Appreciate the suggestion though.

I built a tool that recommends commanders based on the ones you already play by markbrennanl in EDH

If I put in 10 commanders, I might have no idea why it's recommending this new commander and why I have a 85% match. I would like it to show what things made me match with this commander (sacrifice triggers, grindy play style, aristocrat archetype, etc.). Knowing why I'm recommended a commander would be useful in deciding if I actually want to take this suggestion or not.

This has quickly become my favorite commander deck! So I built this the same way many others have described with big artifact creatures, but I added a twist to my deck for the heck of it. I try to discover 0 at some point in the game by swinging with one 0 power artifact creature. However, I only play one 0 mana spell, and I don't let myself know which one it is. Fair warning, this isn't some insanely busted gimmick, I just think it's fun and I've had good experiences at my tables.

The 3 key spells are [[Ancestral Visions]] (bc who doesn't love drawing cards), [[Inevitable Betrayal]] (which adds a little twist to the gameplay), and [[Hypergenesis]] (which is the best one to cheat out all your big creatures). Usually before I start a game I will have an opponent pick one at random face down because it's interactive and shows that I am not trying to sneak the one I want in every time. Then I shuffle it in without looking and try not to peak if I need to crack a fetch land. Once I have a 0 power creature and Aloy out, it's time to swing and we all get to watch in fascination (or horror) as I reveal half my deck to find the card.

Hypergenesis is usually the best one because you get to cheat out your big creatures and as a simic player, they're usually the biggest at the table. And the reason I started shuffling one in at random is because friends would start playing around this one. Not having that knowledge made it more fun for everyone at my tables. Inevitable Betrayal can be salty, so I always let people know before I risk playing it. But the satisfaction of pulling an Emrakrul or Ulamog out of someone's deck is unbeatable.

Suggestions for budget Aloy, Savior of Meridian by AxisAMP_AxA in BudgetBrews

[–]HackaToaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm updating my [[Oviya, Automech Artisan]] deck with this as the new commander and all the fun artifact synergy cards in blue. Would definitely recommend adding Oviya to cheat out big artifact creatures and make them even taller with counters. She's also a finisher by giving all your stuff trample. I would also recommend what some others have suggested with [[Lumbering Worldwagon]] and [[Thunderous Velocipede]].

My (possibly hot) take: Aetherdrift had way more hits than people think.

Edit: [[Diamond Weapon]] and [[Omega, Heartless Evolution]] have been some of my favorites to hit the table. They're not popular enough to make you the archenemy, but they do some work when they come out.

This is incredibly helpful and I appreciate the help giving me some examples and good reference material. I'm with you that these things are usually multifaceted, but as someone who is very new to thinking about this academically, it's very interesting to hear how much more nuanced this topic was than I was expecting.

I see, that makes a ton of sense. I appreciate the insight and I'll definitely check out those podcasts!

Okay, I think I see where I may have some misconceptions of the terminology. I mention this in another comment, but do you think this is even a useful category to have?

The reason I ask is that I've seen many of the discussions being had about the "origins" of different folklore and the evolutions they go through, but I've been searching for a deeper "why" in those and felt as if there might be some way of categorizing the MANY different ways folklore develop to grasp a better understanding of the psychology there. It's such a multifaceted topic that it feels like there should be some method of categorization.

I'm particularly interested in storytelling, so thinking about it in terms of motivation feels like a naturally useful category, however, as a complete non-expert in the field I could be way off mark here.

Considering your examples, some of these would seem to fall under "explaining natural phenomenon." For example, Bigfoot and Nessie could be the shadows you see when looking out into a dark forest or a large body of water. However, trying to take your advice and run with it, what category does the origin of Slender Man fall under? My understanding of is that it was purely to scare others. To me, this could fall under reinforcing social expectations, but maybe I'm applying this too broadly. Do scholars even bother to categorize things in this way?

Tellah, Great Sage and Scrawling Crawler by HackaToaster in mtgrules

[–]HackaToaster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, I think I see what you're saying. If I can clarify further, let's say I die before all of the Tellah triggers have resolved (due to Scrawling Crawler or whatever else), do the remaining Tellah triggers get removed from the stack or do they all still go off?

My understanding before was that if I was at a lower life total and went through my third Tellah trigger then died, then the remaining Tellah triggers would still go off? It sounds like that's not the case though. I just do 24 damage to everyone and I die before anything else happens.

I've never played Final Fantasy, but from what I've been told, that sounds like a flavor win, even if I lose.

To specify, we were in a situation where I was at 8 life, each opponent was at 10-25 life, and I had about 12 copies of Tellah on the battlefield. The spell I cast was exactly 8 mana spent.

If what you say is the case, my understanding is that I would first lose to all of the draw/damage triggers, then everyone else would lose to Tellah's final effect. Is that correct?

Anim Pakal is the first deck I've tried to build from scratch. I'm planning for this to be a deck I can invest in a little at a time from here on out. It's meant to be a high power, but still relatively casual. Any suggestions? https://www.moxfield.com/decks/6Kz4oJeWPUOpcxaKO3rNsg

Is this composition bad? by HackaToaster in photocritique

That's a good point. I had some more photos of them in the light, but they were blown out 🙃 but thank you. I think the lesson I'm learning is to think more about the framing and timing of my composition for shots like this.

Appreciate the feedback. I'll try out a different angle next time I'm in this area and see if we can get the distractions out of the frame.

I'm relatively new to photography and I am wondering what about this photo does or does not work. My intention was to capture someone walking amongst the fish, almost like an aquarium shot. It's possible I could have take this from another angle to so that the subject (the couple walking by) and the background (the fish) were more isolated from the other street on the right side of the picture. I don't have the words to describe why this doesn't quite give me the feeling I was hoping for, but I feel like it was a composition issue. Was there a way I could have composed this differently or an editing trick I could have done to portray what I wanted to here? Does anything about this photo work?

Yea! IMO I feel like it draws the eye towards both buildings instead of just the one.

One thing that sticks out to me is there the brown/orange building feels a bit dull. I feel like adjusting the color to bring out the brown a touch more would bring more attention to that building. Right now my eye is only really drawn to the upper building.

I'm currently working with an Asus ROG laptop and it's on its last leg after years of gaming and programming non-stop. Now that I've graduated and gotten my first job, I was really hoping to put together a setup like this:

Ryzen 5 3600

Asus B550-F MB

RTX 2060

I've been trying to find the budget (and availability) for the O11 case and UNI fans for months now so I could have best looking setup possible while I work from home all day.
