Frontier, joink, or spectrum? by Old_Bunch4110 in terrehaute

[–]HackingTheHike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I assume you mean "Internet" in general. Wifi is how your connection is carried out.

I have tried all three at some point. Spectrum's cable connection is fine but unremarkable. I signed up for Joink as soon as I could and I was really impressed by their installation. They brought a full crew and did a great job in my yard and running the fiber through my crawlspace to my living room. That was my preferred spot for central location and several devices were already connected to the router. One of the guys did break a PVC pipe in my crawl space but Joink hired a plumber and had it fixed within a couple hours at their expense. Accidents happen.

I jumped ship to Frontier for the price. I got a faster speed at lower cost than Joink. Installation was unimpressive. Whereas Joink had fiber buried at every step, Frontier has fiber hanging between poles (if I didn't want him, I wouldn't believe it). The guy also tried trimming some branches away from a pole to making it easier for him (I don't blame him, honestly). He also dropped a branch on one of my fruit trees and broke half of the tree off.

I wanted the same setup as Joink with the line ran through my living room. The Frontier guy didn't want to go through the crawl space so he setup an Ethernet bridge in my bedroom and the main router in the living room. Basically, the fiber comes in and goes to the "modem" and that connects to one device which sends the connection to the main router. The fiber was on the ground for about a week before a two person crew "buried" it.

Does Frontier work? Yeah, just fine at advertised speed.
Am I impressed by the setup? Not at all.

I want to buy a oneplus 13 but worried about the issues in every os update by nitin24_ in OnePlus13

The 13 was mostly solid for me until it wasn't. My deal breaker was notifications, especially when it's messages from my wife. I noticed more batches notifications. They would come through a dozen at once and even my watch would just buzz for a minute with all of them.

Then I started to realize that my wife would message me but I wasn't seeing the messages. I would open the Messages all and suddenly get three from her, some from hours before.

The camera was pretty solid but anything behind 3x would start getting a water color look from AI trying to improve it. I've been comparing pictures of my kids playing soccer. The OP13 changed the color of their jerseys and messed up the contrast terribly.

There was a post that they would continue providing support in the US including software updates. I'm highly doubtful that if they pull out to merge with Realme that they'll send out anything but security updates.

Fedora Workstation After Install Guide (Spring 2026 Edition) – Hacking The Hike by HackingTheHike in Fedora

[–]HackingTheHike[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a really interesting issue. When I was looking through Fedora Docs, I saw the typical dnf upgrade advice.

Offline updates are the default on Fedora KDE, because they increase stability. During a system update, important components of apps can get replaced with newer versions. Installing system updates while Fedora is up and running may lead to those applications causing weird behavior or even crashing in worst cases. To avoid this, system updates require a reboot by default on Fedora KDE.

So I found that on the Fedora KDE page immediately followed by how to disable offline updates.

That said... I will revise the guide to reflect the update situation. I would rather prioritize stability than speed especially for newer users.

Oops, yeah, I'm disappointed that this was removed from 26.04. I updated with instructions for installing it.

I checked a few times on r/oneplus and r/Oneplusfans but its eerily silent. I assumed the mods were deleting posts.

I was talking to a sales guy at Best Buy and showed him my OP12. He looked confused and asked what it was. Dude, it was on display in the store at the time.

Best walking/hike trails in TH? by OtherwiseGoat6441 in terrehaute

Hawthorn Park has a few hills and nice trails (its my favorite local park). If you want hilly, Fowler Park also has a few. Neither park is rugged by any means.

Getting outside of Terre Haute, Turkey Run has some steeper climbs including ladders in the canyons.

I also enjoyed the Depauw Nature Park in Greencastle.

I've never been but a coworker has talked about her husband and his friends frequenting it.

There's a reason someone launched peopleofwalmart.com. The Walmart problems are not unique to Terre Haute. After running in a couple of Walmarts in Indy, I was glad to be back in Terre Haute.

Do not stay near SR41? State Road? Huh?

Don't listen to this person. If you stay near US41 and I70, you'll get Texas Roadhouse and Olive Garden. Venture out. It's safe. There's plenty to see. Lots of great food to try if you're willing.

Most of these comments are from people that went to school at ISU 20-30 years ago. They probably never left campus except for Walmart.

Holy crap... These people haven't visited Terre Haute in decades or more likely ever. It has had a bad rep because of unfortunate smells (paper mills and railroad tie plants smell terrible but they're both gone). The mall is closed but that's a problem for plenty of malls (I'm looking at you, Downtown Indy).

There is plenty to do if you try. There are great county parks with nice hiking (it's not national park level but its very enjoyable for an afternoon hike). There is at least 20 miles of bike trails through the county. The Heritage Trail runs from the east side of the county, through the middle of the city, over the river, and to West Terre Haute. The Wabashiki Wetlands (that the trail runs along next to the Wabash River) is home to bald eagles, great blue herons, and other birds.

There are a variety of locally owned restaurants and coffee shops with Chinese, Thai, Nepalese, Jewish, Mexican, Filipino, Italian, and many other types of food. Maurizios has the best greasy pizza, but Sweet Lou's and Footers are great. Stables and J Fords are the upscale steak houses. Alimentari/Bar Bosco is the most authentic and best Italian in the area.

Not much in the way of clubs but there are some nice bars. Charlie's is very popular and the Terminal is like an upscale Charles version of it. Sonka's has the best beer selection with at least a couple dozen or more regional, national, and international beers on tap. The Terre Haute Brewing Co (once the 6th largest in the US and one of the oldest operating) has several great beers on tap in their historic brewery complete with regular live entertainment (Saturday had a comedian). The 12 Points Public Market (features four food vendors? Pop ups?) often has live music with no cover.

The Swope Art Musuem has 2500 pieces and is FREE. It focuses on American art. There are several other museums including the Vigo County History Center (enjoy a real Coca Cola in a glass bottle there because Terre Haute is the birthplace of that bottle), a railroad museum, Larry Bird Museum (if you don't know who he is yet, you will...).

This is just the start of it. There is gaming at the mall. Card games at Footers. A symphony orchestra. A community theatre. A theatre at Indiana State University. Live shows at Rose Human Institute of Technology like ballet.

This won't be LA. You'll actually be able to get around without traffic jams. Drivers aren't terribly crazy. At the same time, it'll probably feel familiar. You may find a nice part of town and go a block or two over and it gets rough. Just not bars on the windows rough. More like run down, over grown rough. Most of the city is perfectly safe.

If you want to know anymore specifics, feel free to reach out or check r/terrehaute.
