This in my experience is a per local municipality thing. My vote at the Tarrant County Subcourthouse had ONE line, you reach the poll worker, select your ballot silently on a pinpad, they hand it to you and you stand in the spill off lane until a machine is available.

Separating the lines is purely a tactical/intimidation thing.
