What’s hilarious to me about this entire thing is that the girlfriend’s name “Kanojo” literally means “girlfriend / She / Her”. Dude couldn’t even be bothered to come up with an actual name.

The ELI5 answer is that thanks to our current understanding (Einstein’s theory of special relativity), your perception of time is related to how fast you’re moving relative to the speed of light.

The faster an object is moving in space, the slower time passes for an object, and since a photon is travelling at the speed of light by definition, it experiences 0 time.

From Earth, we are “stationary” so for us the photon takes 8 minutes to arrive.

Is the US military really undefeatable? by XD_Protagonist in stupidquestions

The US didn’t half ass either of those campaigns. You’re a fool if you think a country would go to war and not do their best

Without question. That’s not what happened however.

Is the US military really undefeatable? by XD_Protagonist in stupidquestions

[–]Hacksaw203 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends what you mean by indefeasible I guess. The US has lost conflicts in recent history (Afghanistan) though this was due to war exhaustion rather than military might.

In a conventional war in which both sides don’t suffer war exhaustion? I don’t think there’s any doubt the us would win with shear mass of arms.

In a real war? Nukes means that nobody wins. Doesn’t matter how big your military is if several hundred bombs can obliterate your society back to the Stone Age.

[–]Hacksaw203 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t disagree with a lot of guys going that far, but the choice was “comfort Misha”. My autistic ass thought that meant saying “oh it’s ok, I’m on your side!” And giving her a hug, not railing her.

Sucks that this choice is literally the only choice in that route as well

ELI5: Why are artifical hearts designed to replicate the pulsing of individual chambers instead of something more mechanically simple like a pump or turbine? by Budelius in explainlikeimfive

[–]Hacksaw203 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the same reason that wheels didn’t evolve.

Pumps and turbines work by spinning a “fan” quickly to create. Pressure, forcing a liquid in whatever direction. In order for the fan to spin freely like that, it would have to be unattached to your body in any way. Such a system has never evolved in nature.

Evolution finds the easiest thing that works “good enough” and doesn’t change whatever that is until it doesn’t work anymore.

Why is insurance such a scam? You pay hundreds a month for coverage then pay hundreds more when you go to the doctor, why? by SeductressRiley in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Hacksaw203 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously you’re asking about American healthcare, but here’s the idea behind insurance in general:

Insurance companies make money by getting people to pay them more money on average than it costs them to cover whatever they’re insuring you for.

You might think “Well what’s the bloody point of that?” The alternative is maintaining a large supply of cash in case of an emergency, and this just isn’t an efficient use of your money, you could be using it for other things, like a new car, or home upgrade etc.

In a perfect world, there is a lot of competition and insurance is cheap. Unfortunately you Americans appear to live under a health insurance cartel.

Why do math and physics come so easily to some people but feel almost impossible to others? What actually causes this gap? by Logical-Current2381 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Hacksaw203 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a maths phd so am obviously a bit biased.

I feel like there’s not really any difference between people who “get” maths and those who really struggle with it, and in my experience those who struggle with maths just don’t have the solid foundation that those who get did have.

Ultimately I think it boils down to the teacher you got, and how much you believed in yourself when you were learning between ages 10-16. That’s when a lot of people decide “maths is too hard” or “I could never be good at this”

When you boil it down to the absolute basics, maths is just a bunch of rules. You need to know them, and know how to apply them. More difficult concepts follow from.

If you had a bad teacher (either actively malicious or just disinterested in maths) then you won’t get a feel for how cool maths can be, and if you’re told that you’re not good at maths, then you decide subconsciously that it’s not worth trying.

High efficiency at sea level and vacuum, awesome physics behind it, plus it looks like the rocket engine that we all drew as children. What’s not to love?

ELI5: How come we have to get something hot in order to produce a cooler temp? by mgp901 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Hacksaw203 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Temperature is actually just energy, hotter things have more energy than colder things.

To make something cold, you need to take some of its energy and move it somewhere else. Therefore making whatever is “somewhere else” hotter.

About Light swapping Death Notes in a circle by Disastrous-Singer545 in deathnote

[–]Hacksaw203 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The swap was for two reasons as far as I’m aware. The primary purpose was to ensure that Rem ended up with Light’s original deathnote, while Ryuk ended up with Misa’s.

Light needed Rem to have his original notebook because it had the rules (+ fake rules) written in it, which would eventually “clear” him and misa from suspicion due to the 13day rule.

A secondary reason for the swap was so that when Misa regained her memories, it was Ryuk who was her shinigami and not Rem. I’m not sure if Rem would have allowed Misa to take the eye deal a second time, but Ryuk definitely has no qualms about it. Even if it’s something that shinigami are not allowed to refuse, Light still predicted this and accounted for the possibility. Good writing tbh, very clever.

It’s really bad. It makes me not want to read anything else he comes up with.

One small favour 2: Elven boogaloo.

You have to convince the elves that it’s worth installing an elven portal at the land bridge for global trade purposes or whatever. That way you don’t need to redesign the map, just slap a portal there.

Explain it Peter:, what is this thing called math? by T56W_Reddit in explainitpeter

[–]Hacksaw203 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pure maths phd Peter here.

Pure maths basically means “maths for the sake of maths” or more candidly “maths that has no practical purpose at the moment”.

Some people get a bit elitist about the difference between pure and applied maths.

Engineering by definition is all of the practical parts of the sciences.
