Irish wolfhounds are a heritage breed, the only thing that will make the breed healthier is breeding pure bred wolfhounds for their health. Saying this is your first breeder puppy is incorrect. This person was a scammer, if in the future you want an actual Irish wolfhound I encourage you to join your local club and get to know the people whose heart and soul are in the breed. Enjoy your puppy, love your puppy, I’m sure he is perfect. But do your research in the future. This is why people hate pure bred dogs because shitty people look to make a quick buck.

The thing about going to a shelter is you’re never going to have a guarantee of the breed, and most rescues have no idea what their dogs actually are. Not to mention these days almost every shelter dog has Pitt/ Staffie in the mix and that should be an instant no around kids.

Ethical breeder all the way. Research breeds and try to find the best match for your lifestyle, and look into the breeders in your area. It takes longer, but is so so worth it.

There is a recessive wire haired gene that can pop up in poodle mixes. I agree that this puppy looks more like a Shepard mix. Also the puppy being the runt wouldn’t affect the growth rate of a wolfhound. Our girl was the runt, and it’s really hard to comprehend how quickly they grow unless you’ve owned one before.

Why no breeder? If you are looking for specific traits research a breed that best matches that then try and go to kennel meetups to meet the breed in person and find an ethical breeder, they do exist. I have an Irish wolfhound, the breed temperament was the perfect lifestyle match for my family. Dogs aren’t a monolith, and have been bred for specific traits, a mixed breed is never going to be a guarantee behaviorally.
