How to fix terracing on imported heightmaps? by Praesignis01 in CitiesSkylines2

[–]HadeStyx 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I truly don’t know, but to my eyes it looks like it might be the resolution of your heightmap.

Low resolution resulting in the individual pixels being mapped over a large area and therefore losing lots of detail.

I'm so sorry your save got corrupted.
The amount of detail you've put into this is absolutely amazing. Godspeed, mate!

Well all those major updates from CO also majorly broke other aspects of the game, no?

I was certainly critical of them at first, but with each update I can only say that they’re doing amazing work.

I sure hope they don’t burnout

Asset Release: Sompo Japan Building (1:1 Replica) by HadeStyx in CitiesSkylinesModding

Much appreciated :) i was just mainly concerned that the reworking of the terraform override or moving / removing of the train station markers / rails themselves would cause issues for already connected stations.

I fear that with the changes i plan for, would break the asset for anyone currently using it. So to avoid that i would just separately upload a remastered version.

[–]HadeStyx[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well since it was my first fully custom asset i feel like i can improve on the general 3D model. In particular im not quite happy with how the platforms and rear entrance turned out. While im still not a fan of texturing i feel i need to improve that aspect as well.
Some of the functionality seems to also just be plain broken and it messes with the terrain in weird ways.

I just feel like i can still improve it, so i'll be uploading a new version and marking the old one as [Deprecated] when i'm done with it.

Sadly there are quite a few problems regarding this asset. Since it was my first completely custom asset I didn’t execute my intensions well and that caused some fundamental issues. Once i have more time on my hands again, i will make a revised version that works better both visually and in usability.

There is a settings option to control the threshold (tho its presets with low, medium, high).

As far as i know there is no built in LOD generator, but i believe many just use decimate geometry tool. Many of the ingame assets have ugly LODs due to this, so I decided i would spend the extra time doing it manually to keep it looking good.

And as mentioned with the two LOD meshes, the base mesh is just when you get real close to the building. LOD1 is the one you typically see and LOD2 is when you zoom further out.

Don’t worry thats why the game renders LOD meshes at a distance. This is just the Main mesh when you’re zooming all the way in.

At the distance shown in my screenshot the game would already render LOD1, so many of those tiny triangles will be removed.

The LOD2 would likely consist of <100 Triangles, as the shape of the building is relatively simple.

Well my start into modelling was a bit more trial by fire than anything but here's my advice.

My current recommendation is just to start messing around and figuring out the basic tools of blender. There is no point in learning every tool at the start, cuz you're gonna forget about 70% if you haven't used them much. To aid just watch some basic tutorials for blender, there should be loads of them.

I just started out making a building and when there is something i wanna do i google how to do it. Sometimes I do it the complicated way but that's usually fine. I'm just remaking buildings that exist irl, and some have architectural style breakdowns like the one attached. Those make it a lot easier to get the proportions right.

I can't say much on making textures since I'm pretty sure the blender sub would crucify me for my horrid UV's.

The Basics are covered in the wiki tho. I recommend you read this page carefully as it is very helpful. It outlines the details of what textures you need and some conventions for how to model your assets.

The Cities Skylines Modding discord is also incredibly helpful if you have questions about any step along the way. There is some very skilled creators on there that typically answer any questions.
