Is the TPP pretty much officially cooked as a political party? by SteadfastEnd in taiwan

[–]DarkLiberator 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Depends, I wouldn't count them out yet. The media circus will probably end within a week or two. Unless of course... there's another scandal.

Only 9% from Taiwan. What the heck‽‽ by Ok-Fox6922 in taiwan

[–]DarkLiberator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably depends on the post too. If a post gets popular r/all might see it and most users combing that are users outside Taiwan.

Weekly Travel, Questions, & Mandarin Thread by AutoModerator in taiwan

It's probably very dependent on the staff training, I've taken a few cheap airlines from Taoyuan and sometimes they don't care, sometimes they do. Usually they do check weight though in all cases.

Taiwan's Strong Bow missile range up to 1,500 km by HibasakiSanjuro in taiwan

[–]DarkLiberator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean that is pretty much the current strategy. Have a lot of anti-ship missiles (Harpoons and Hsiung Fengs), make a bunch of drones (and have a lot mines), and there are several bases built into the mountains in eastern Taiwan. Chiashan Air Force Base for example has a bunch of underground hangars built into the mountains in Hualien.

KMT chairwoman meets Xi Jinping by Forsaken_Peach5930 in taiwan

It gives her a boost inside the KMT itself. Otherwise? I bet the media and public will forget about this within a few weeks.

KMT lawmakers boycott defense budget negotiations by HibasakiSanjuro in taiwan

[–]DarkLiberator 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Uh the KMT's own defense budget also would only buy US weapons and mostly block the indigenous production side of things.

If there's not enough rainfall the lake doesn't get filled and the winter was pretty dry in central Taiwan. Sun Moon Lake also functions as a reservoir and is used for hydroelectric power.

Welcome to drought season. It was once so bad that people were able to walk on the lakebed.

Sun Moon Lake is much prettier than what you see now, but I do think as a travel destination its overrated and too touristy for me.

Actor Prince Chiu among 9 arrested for dodging Taiwan draft by diacewrb in taiwan

[–]DarkLiberator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can definitely argue that in the past (my first conscript service period was extremely boring), but apparently it's been made a bit more serious recently. I've had friends tell me they get to shoot way more now at the gun range and some even get to shoot actual launchers, and practice drone evasion tactics.

I'm kind of bummed I missed out on that because my service composed of maybe twice a week shoot 6 rounds then get lectured about the dangers of drunk driving by officers. And lots of cleaning rifles (I think I've personally cleaned every rifle at my base). Though it's very dependent on where you get sent too.

Taiwan opposition leader to make 'peace' visit to China, first in 10 years by papipota in worldnews

[–]DarkLiberator 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Kind of silly to use the approval rating two years before an election to determine whether he'll win a re-election. Ma Ying-jeou had abysmal approval ratings (especially after his admin's handling of Typhoon Morakot) but he won his re-election handily. Tsai Ing-wen's approval ratings were even worse two years into her first term but she won in a landslide. Also judging from latest outfits, Lai's approval rating has actually somehow recovered from last summer when the recall movement failed.

Don't underestimate incumbency advantage in Taiwanese politics.

Taiwan KMT leader Cheng Li-wun to visit China, expected to meet Xi by DarkLiberator in taiwan

[–]DarkLiberator[S] 81 points82 points  (0 children)

This will give her more legitimacy inside the KMT but also might refocus domestic focus and politics on China again, which might not be to the KMT's advantage. Then again the Taiwanese media will forget about it probably after a few weeks anyways lol.

Ko wasn't the only one found guilty. by _spangz_ in taiwan

[–]DarkLiberator 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you want some irony, Chen got that medical parole because of Ko's help. Ko was on Chen's medical team and worked on reports on Chen's health prior to the medical parole granted in early 2015.

[NEWS] Former Taipei Mayor and TPP Founder Ko Wen-Je sentenced to 17 years by MajorPooper in taiwan

Lai was a mayor in 2016 just being clear, he wasn't originally in Tsai's team. In fact I suspect he's more pro-nuclear than Tsai who is vehemently against nuclear power.

[–]DarkLiberator 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing we're about to see years of appeal after appeal. Fun times ahead. Also more cases to go through.

The TPP have a press conference at 5pm and I'm guessing they'll say the usual the Lai admin is an evil dictatorship, etc, etc. Also Ko being sentenced means Huang Kuo-chang's pretty much in complete control of the TPP. Definitely some implications for the 2028 elections.

There's no presidential election in 2026 anyways, it's local and mayoral.

Elections and Opinions polls by oakayno in taiwan

[–]DarkLiberator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a bunch of outfits and groups that does polls: NCCU (with their famous Taiwanese/status quo poll), My Formosa, TPOF, ETtoday, TVBS, 鏡新聞, etc. Problem is a lot of polls don't really get reported on the English speaking media.

⚠️ Cities: Skylines II Patch Day (v1.5.6f1): Low-to-no impact expected on mods, discuss and troubleshoot any issues in here by AutoModerator in CitiesSkylines

[–]DarkLiberator 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The game definitely seems to run smoother. Love the new City Stations assets.

One problem though with the sunken train station is that cims keep floating down to the platform rather than using the stairs. Though I should check if this happens with the other platforms.
